"What Cheer House" was constructed in 1853 during the height of the California Gold Rush. The building was a hotel as well serving some state government offices / grocery wholesale business and eventually warehouses for the maritime shipping industries. The building is registered as a National & California Historic Landmark # 597.
Sacramento City was known to be a very friendly place to live. It was thought that the building was named after a friendly salutation commonly used during the gold rush period. People would greet one another with "What Cheer Partner" thus the building got it's name..
It was said that the proprietor of the hotel would hired orphans to steal luggage from the arriving passengers of docking ships and trains. The outraged victims would chase the children directly to "The What Cheer House Lobby". Once there they would be inticed to buy supplies/ have a drink/ or spend the night. As the growth of the city started to move eastward, the hospitality business took a downward turn. Mr. Peasley then sold the building to "Mebius & Drescher" for their wholesale grocery business.
What Cheer House fell into despair by the mid 1960's and had to be rebuilt after a devastating fire sometime in the 1970's. The building hence had been purchased by Stage Nine Entertainment . Recently the upper floors were remodeled into first class office space with a European kitchen. As always thanks for reading ! "What Cheer Partner" !
