Discriminatory Treatment at WHATIFTHEWORLD Gallery
On March 8, 2025, my friend and I, both first-year students, visited the gallery, excited to explore the art. However, we were singled out and harassed by a staff member, despite following the same behavior as other visitors.
While others freely took photos, we were aggressively told we couldn’t, making us feel unwelcome. As we left,we were scolded for now valid reason at all and humiliated in front of the other visitors. While waiting for an uber to go back home, the same staff member called us back, falsely accused us of damaging artwork, and said, “I have to blame you for the damaged artwork because your purses that were placed on the floor were next to the artwork” and also simply because we were nearby. She then demanded our personal information in a hostile manner, refusing to let us explain. The magnitude of humiliation in public that we experienced and being scolded for absolutely no reason but for taking pictures like every other visitor was doing was extremely disheartening.
As young Black women, we believe this treatment was discriminatory and unacceptable. No visitor should experience harassment or racial profiling in a space meant for creativity and expression. We urge the gallery to address this issue to ensure all visitors are treated with fairness and respect.
