The wife and I chose this pub for food based on reviews, and even though it was a 6 mile drive down narrow, twisty lanes, it was well worth the effort. The wife had just conquered the Coniston Old Man in the cold wind and rain. She was very hungry so we ordered the Steak Pie to share. Wow! More like family sized. Everything about that meal was delicious, the cabbage was cooked to perfection, the gravy was dark and rich and full of flavour. The pastry was perfect in texture and taste. The meat was so soft and tender and tasted divine. Even the humble roast potato's were sublime - perfect. You wouldn't think chefs could mess up a roast potato but most do. This chef at the Wheatsheaf is second to none. Don't let them go - ever - because you'll be hard pressed to replace them with equal talent. We have a couple of regular haunts who produce consistent, exceptional food but the Wheatsheaf in Brigsteer is now our all time favourite. its 140 miles from home but all I need to do is take wife to conquer another mountain, no, come to think of it, its worth the drive just to experience a meal of that quality, the mountain becomes secondary, and I don't say that lightly. If I could give this pub 6 stars I would. A word of warning. If you order the steak pie, you better be very hungry, its huge. Wonderful staff too, friendly and helpful. Even the beer is great. Just can't fault the place. Already planning another visit soon as possible.
