Whiskey Cake Kitchen & Bar: Comfort Food With a Creative Twist
Some meals stand out not just because of the food, but because of the people you share them with. Our visit to Whiskey Cake Kitchen & Bar was one of those moments. We were fortunate to have all of our adult children together, which does not happen often, and decided to enjoy a special meal while Christmas shopping at the St Johns Town Center.
Whiskey Cake immediately caught our attention. The exterior is inviting, and the Airstream incorporated into the patio adds a fun, unexpected element that sets the tone before you even walk inside. Once seated, the atmosphere feels warm and lively, blending a down home country vibe with an upscale polish. It reminds us of places you might stumble upon off a back road in the South, just elevated.
The menu is extensive and thoughtfully designed. There truly is something for everyone, and the cocktail list is especially impressive. I ordered the Rosemary Paloma, which was refreshing and paired beautifully with the meal. We started with the jalapeño biscuits, which were a hit across the table and set a great opening note.
My chicken and waffles was easily one of the best versions I have had. The addition of an egg made it uniquely theirs, and the waffle itself had excellent flavor. Paired with real Vermont maple syrup, it was a standout. I also sampled the French onion burger, and despite not being a big burger person, this one was exceptional and something I would absolutely order again.
Not every dish landed perfectly. The brussels sprouts were undercooked and included sliced grapes, which felt unusual and did not work for us. The fried tomatoes were heavily breaded, masking the flavor, and Susan’s chili arrived cold and missed the mark overall, despite nice presentation. On the positive side, the sweet potato soup was enjoyable and comforting.
Service was good overall, though it was clear the staff was stretched thin due to the holiday rush. Drinks and refills took some time, but the attitude and professionalism of the team were excellent. Given how busy they were, we felt they handled things well, and we would love to return on a quieter evening.
Portion sizes are generous, and while the menu leans toward the higher end, the value is absolutely there. This is a restaurant that delivers a fun, memorable experience with plenty of highlights and just enough creativity to keep things interesting.
