Bright Ideas in Travel 2024

"White Desert has been conducting small, luxury expeditions to Antarctica since 2005, and in October 2024, the tour operator launched the White Desert Foundation, which will help support ecosystem restoration and climate change research on the white continent and beyond. The foundation has already issued its first grants: funding a team of scientists in Antarctica and a blue carbon project just outside Cape Town, from where the company flies guests to its low-impact Antarctic camps. White Desert has been CarbonNeutral-certified since 2007 with the help of offsets, but is taking steps to reduce its own emissions wherever possible, including by trialing and using sustainable aviation fuel—the first operator in Antarctica to do so—which the company hopes to roll out across its aircraft over the next three to five years. In the meantime, the planes have their own role to play in supporting environmental and climate research: each season, about 50% of the people White Desert transports to the continent are scientists, which adds up to around 150 scientists a year."

I am forever changed and I will cherish every memory created on ice with White Desert. Words fall short to even start to express the most profound experience and amazing adventure of my life. It is one of those things where you have to be there to understand it and I truly hope you get a change to be on ice with White Desert one day. From the cool, unique mode of transport, to the passionate guides and excellent White Desert staff, to the exceptional food, the super comfortable sleeping pods and general high standards, this is a luxurious trip you will never forget. … and I haven’t even started to mention the adventures and activities on ice at Whichaway…. From hiking the glaciers and ice lakes, to the breathtaking walks among the ice waves and goosebumps moments in the ice tunnels, to ice climbing and abseiling, to doing yoga in the Wellness Dome and relaxing in the sauna, you will fall in love with this continent and this extraordinary company and it’s people. I HIGHLY recommend White Desert for your trip to Antarctica

A fantastic experience from start to finish. First of all you have the incredible stark beauty of Antarctica, which you get to visit and explore, but White Desert takes it far beyond that. There's the impeccably handled logistics – you don't have to worry about anything, they have you covered sorting your equipment, luggage, transfers, your way through the airport, you name it. But more importantly the staff: everyone you come into contact with is competent, knowledgeable and caring. From the guides to the kitchen staff. I consider them all as friends now. It's a wild adventure with plenty of physical exertion and exploration if you want it, plus all the comforts on top – and in such a remote part of the world that few get to visit. It's incredible to get both sides at once. It's great fun flying inside Antarctica on the Basler and Twin Otter as well. Wholeheartedly recommend.

I’ve just returned from the Greatest Day. It was fabulous despite us having to fly back and forth for ten hours and having to abort the landing due to strong winds just before landing. The White Desert Team are top notch and dedicated to making this an exceptional experience for you. We got to walk through a small underground crevasse with mountain guides who had done the 3 year renown mountaineering school in Chamonix. I came away wishing I could gift this experience to my nearest and dearest.

If you’re on the fence about booking a trip with White Desert, consider this your sign - do it! This was, without a doubt, the most extraordinary travel experience of my life. White Desert offers unparalleled private access to Antarctica, and this special journey will stay with you forever. From the moment we stepped on their private A340 flight in Cape Town, I felt like I was part of something truly special. The logistics were complicated yet flawless - every detail was handled with care, and the entire journey felt stress-free. Touching down on the private Wolf’s Fang Runway on ice, surrounded by mountains and endless ice, was nothing short of surreal. Whether you choose Whichaway or Echo, the camps are designed with both luxury and sustainability in mind. Whichaway Camp was cozy, authentic, and effortlessly luxurious, blending well with the surrounding landscape of massive glaciers and rocky paths. What surprised me the most was the quality of the food. Each meal was a multi-course masterpiece that rivaled gourmet restaurants around the world - it’s hard to believe this level of dining exists in one of the most remote places on Earth. It’s a testament to the extraordinary logistics behind White Desert’s operations. The activities were exciting and pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way. Ice climbing towering walls, zip-lining across glaciers, hiking through frozen waves, and exploring breathtaking ice tunnels - it was all unforgettable. One of the major highlights were all the flights we took on the private Basler and Twin Otters. Another big highlight was more personal: I got engaged :) But what truly was the cherry on top of the perfect trip were the staff. By the end of the stay, it felt like we became family. The guides aren’t just knowledgeable - they’re world-renowned experts, including famous alpinists and explorers who have accomplished some of the greatest feats in mountaineering. Imagine learning to play basketball with LeBron James - that’s exactly how I felt during many of our excursions as I tried things for the first time. I also deeply appreciated how White Desert combines luxury and adventure with a strong commitment to environmental responsibility. Whether you’re considering a day trip or a longer stay at one of their camps, know that it’s a life-changing journey that will stay with you forever. Book it - you won’t regret it.

Very Happy C.

This was the Most Magical Day of My Life, a journey beyond my imagination. I had the absolute honour of experiencing the most magical and unforgettable day of my life on White Desert’s Luxury Antarctica Day Trip from Cape Town. From the moment I arrived for the pre-flight safety briefing, the professionalism, friendliness, and incredible attention to detail from the entire White Desert team made me feel completely safe, excited, and cared for. Our five-hour journey across the Southern Ocean felt surreal. As the African night turned into Antarctica daylight and thousands of icebergs glistened below us, I knew I was about to experience something extraordinary. We travelled in ultimate comfort, with a world-class crew who made the journey feel effortless. Touching Down in a Dreamscape Landing on Wolf’s Fang Runway was like stepping onto another planet. Jagged rock spires, endless white horizons, and shimmering blue ice created a landscape so breathtaking it felt unreal. Yet the expert on-ice staff ensured I felt safe every step of the way. Into the Heart of the Ice Exploring ancient ice tunnels and crevasses—secured in our harnesses—was nothing short of magical. The glowing blue ice, sparkling crystals, and thousands of years of frozen history around me moved me immensely. Then came the Ice Bar and its incredible carved ice rooms, with spectacular ice carvings and meteorites displayed beautifully illuminated in shifting colours, where we enjoyed champagne chilled with 10,000-year-old ice. Pure wonder. I deeply appreciated White Desert’s commitment to responsible tourism and the environment. Being the first carbon-neutral aviation operator in Antarctica speaks volumes about their values. This experience was breathtaking, emotional, and life-changing something that I will cherish forever. Thank you to the White Desert Cape Town Team, the Hospitality Team, the Flight Crew, and the On-Ice Team for a day filled with magic, beauty, and awe. I will never forget this journey—nor the people who made it extraordinary. If you’re dreaming of something truly once-in-a-lifetime… THIS is it. Very Happy Customer

No words can describe how special our Greatest Day was with White Desert. Six months later, we still look at our pictures or watch White Desert videos almost daily. We are so blessed to have experienced something very, very few people have ever or will ever, see. The entire staff was amazing and, despite 10,000 miles and 11 time zones away, were extremely helpful and responsive to our every question and concern. Specifically, Amanda, Brandon, and Leandi took us from start to finish to ensure we had the best possible trip to Antarctica. White Desert is doing something nobody else even attempts. We have traveled to all 7 Continents now but probably appreciate Antarctica the most. Crazy as that seems, this is such a special place that is removed from the politics, pollution, and strife that exists everywhere else. Don't miss a chance to experience the beauty and friendship that exists nowhere else. White Desert continues to improve their experiences and offerings. We are always watching to see what is next and have already been contacted with the next adventures on the horizon. Thanks to all of the White Desert Team for making this possible! We hope to see you again soon! Best Regards, George and Carolyn Stackman
