Wow! Were we in for a pleasant surprise when we decided to brave a rain storm for the history books to get a bite to eat at the White House Tavern. I'm from Nashville originally and go back several times a year. To say that dining options in Southern Illinois are minimal in that particular area would not be an exaggeration. We were so bored of the usual tavern fare that we were willing to brave a rainstorm that was so bad we had to pull over on the highway for a few minutes just so we could see out our window. When we arrived, we were seated at a cozy little table and given the lowdown on their menu. Very basic good BBQ selections. We decided to try a bit of everything, the pulled pork, the brisket, etc. WOW! Absolutely melt in your mouth pork, baby! Then we dipped into the sides. Smoked potatoes people........ didn't have any idea of what I was in for until I popped a bite into my mouth and had my eyes almost pop out of my skull, MMMmmmmmmm............ Their baked beans are just plain stupid. Best baked beans I have ever had in my entire life. The price is ridiculously reasonable too. I think my entire meal was all of $8 tops, and I had enough left over for another meal. The place has a beautiful art deco bar in it that I just had to ask about. After talking to the waitstaff, they introduced me to the owner and chef. He cooks everything on his smoker out in the shed out back, just like all good southern BBQ should be;-) I complimented him on his good eats and friendly place. I will most certainly go back next time I am home. It is officially on my places of must eat in Southern Illinois.
