My wife and I had been hoping to have a little weekend getaway for the family day weekend, and asked around about where we should check out. A bunch of people suggested Niagara-on-the-Lake so we then had to pick a place to stay. After a quick Google we heard lots of good things about White Oaks, and managed to find a deal on Expedia so we booked it.
Overall it was perfectly fine, but rather average, and I expected more for the price we were paying.
The staff was friendly and courteous which is nice. The front desk in particular was very friendly and warm, and was poised to answer any questions or concerns we might have had.
The "resort" is quite large, but does just feel like a standard hotel. We stayed in one of the tower rooms, which was apparently recently renovated. It was nice enough, and quite spacious, but felt like the space wasn't used to its full potential.
We both had massages at the resorts spa, and while the massages were nice, we were a bit surprised at how quick the overall spa experience was. We had been to other places in the past where you may only have a 60 mins massage, but are then allowed to stay and use whirlpools, lounges, etc. to make a day of it. Unfortunately this spa doesn't have any of those sorts of things, it's very "you're in and you're out".
Which brings me to the pool situation. Yikes. Clearly this is one area that hasn't been renovated. The pool and hot tub both looked as though they had seen better days. There's also no change rooms attached to the pool area, so you would have to change and walk around the hotel grounds in your swimsuit, which just seems odd. There are a couple of small restrooms in the pool area, but they too looked as though they had seen much better days. My wife and I were so turned off we decided to skip the pool entirely.
We didn't have a chance to eat at both restaurants, but tried their more casual restaurant "PLAY" and enjoyed a nice meal there. Their caesar salad was excellent, and I would definitely recommend that.
Overall, we had a nice time away together, which was all that really matters, but for the price we paid we kind of expected more. One thing you can't beat is the location: you're 15 minutes from just about anywhere you need to get to, which is certainly a benefit. But it does feel like the resort is banking on the convenience factor, rather than making the best experience possible.
