5 Historic Adirondack Great Camps You Can Stay In - AFAR

"Dating to 1907 and famed as President Calvin Coolidge’s Summer White House in 1926, this historic camp offers a lodge plus 13 cottages with handcrafted Adirondack‑style furniture, stone fireplaces or wood stoves, and scenic views; the President’s Cabin is available to reserve. On‑site amenities include an indoor tennis court, bowling alley, two boathouses, and a much‑photographed Japanese teahouse on a peninsula of Osgood Pond. Open year‑round, the property enforces a seven‑day minimum in July and August and a two‑day minimum the rest of the year, with summer rates typically ranging from about $175 to $495 per night." - Suzanne Rowan Kelleher

So peaceful and beautiful. Just a magical place. They have canoes to take out on the pond from 2 different boat launches. A lot of history here, we liked walking around the grounds and looking at the different buildings. Staff are wonderful, very helpful.

This location is perfect! It is set in a beautiful, remote part of the Adirondacks and the cabins are awesome and quirky. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. It’s a great place if you’re looking for outdoor activities or want a quiet place to relax for a few days. The cabins are equipped with kitchens/kitchen supplies too. Being remote it is worth planning your food trips into town, which is about a 20-25 minute drive. Communication was great as they were very responsive via phone and email.

This place is beautiful. The cabin rooms we stayed in were basically brand new because much of the place is recently renovated. It was cozy, warm, and extremely clean. We also had fun exploring the grounds (and older buildings) by walking around on the snowy trails. We saw the lake, boathouse, bowling alley, and tried a little ping-pong. This place would also be great in the summer.

This property is a little like a daydream, a little like turning up in a book you were hoping to read. Everything is casual, nothing is thoughtless. Our cabin was irreproachably clean, and smelled like the woods in the best way. The decor was classic, the furnishings substantial, and the linens truly seemed luxurious. Everything was far nicer than it needs to be for a rental---this felt like staying at a relative's home because someone, somewhere, really cares about this place. The property was beautiful with lovely viewpoints and trails. Staff was friendly and helpful. For anyone concerned about the fire a few years ago, I wasn't once I got there and saw sprinklers as well as smoke alarms in every room, exit doors clearly marked, fire extinguishers, and a giant pipe outside that appears to connect to the pond. This property is very well managed and as well maintained as a historic property of this size could be--it's an impressive task. We loved our peaceful stay and I especially loved just being able to relax with two small kids knowing that the cabin was exactly the clean and comfy home away from home we needed.

I stayed here through Christmas time with my partner. We stayed in Ms. Otis cabin! While our porch was shared with Guides Cabin, it still felt very private. Our stay was extremely romantic and relaxing! Cabins are very remote, which we enjoyed! Osgood Pond is gorgeous and serene, and there are plenty of trails within the area to check out. I made sure to stock up on groceries prior to checking in and I was glad I did, we didn’t want to leave the cabin at all! We found ourselves laying on the couch in front of the fireplace just relaxing for most of our trip! Cabin was well stocked with pots, pans and cooking utensils. We were provided towels and super soft bed linens as well. I was surprised to even see that our cabin was supplied with coffee and lots of books to read. There’s no television, which we knew about prior! But you truly don’t even miss having one! The WiFi was pretty decent in our cabin too. The Great Room was beautifully decorated for Christmas and the fireplace was a perfect touch! My only complaint about our cabin was that the floors were a little dusty, but there was a broom available so we just swept it up with no issues, also the pillows for the bed were a little flat for my taste. Other than that, it was a perfect little getaway. Tim Moody is an amazing Innkeeper and responds super quick to all inquiries. I truly loved my experience here and I will 100% return soon.

The cabin had everything we needed (except a blender, but not everyone needs one of those!). Loved the kayaks and canoes. Did wish the row boat oars were in working order. Tim was the best! Other guests were incredibly respectful and friendly. There are several nice day trip paddles from Osgood Pond. Saranac Lake (the town) isn't far and has great shops, art, and restaurants. The Paul Smith Interpretive Center is a MUST- be sure to check out the butterflies and hummingbirds. The college is awesome, as well. We ate at the cafeteria for $10- all you can eat. Very nice campus bookstore, too. It was a relaxing vacation for us girls. Highly recommended.

This is our second stay and we couldn’t be more in love with our experience. Tim the Innkeeper is available for any questions, suggestion and help with creating an amazing stay. So many options to walk around this beautiful property wether you visit in the winter or any another season. So relaxing and enchanting especially as an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Can’t wait to return. 💜

We booked the GAte cabin which had 2 bedrooms with queen beds and one bedroom with 2 bunkbeds. Two full bathrooms, wood burning stiove, kicthen, living room & dining room. Kitchen had everything we needed to cook our meals. Grill available outdoors as well as a fire pit. Wood supplied as well as kindling to get fires started. Beautiful dock area with scenic views. Plenty of hiking paths at camp and close by. Very quiet and relaxing. This cabion was well away from all the others - but even the other cabins close to the main lodge seemed nice. Intermitten cellular access - texts sometimes came though but no phone - had to go down the road a bit for that. Staff were very firendly and came to help the one time we had a question. We had 5 adults in the cabin without it feeling crowded.

Yelp
If you are looking for quiet, calm, and a chance to unplug (but not completely) and take a deep, healing pause, White Pine Camp is the ideal place. Our family loved the history, the cabin, the incredible scenic views, the Great Room and all the amenities WPC offers. We stayed in the larger Mrs. Coolidge's cabin, the same cabin Grace Coolidge stayed in the summer of 1926 when the camp served as the Summer White House for Calvin Coolidge. We took advantage of the huge living room fireplace and had a beautiful fire everyday for our week stay. The wood is well seasoned and burns nicely. It is charmingly rustic, clean and well appointed. The sofas are comfortable and the cabin had everything we needed. What it didn't have we asked in the office and Voila! they had it on hand. We needed a blender, a different bathtub plug and tape to fix a sled and every time they accommodated our needs. Worth noting: You can sometimes hear the next door neighbors in President's Cabin but it's only from the bedroom and it was nothing that the white noise machine that the camp provided wouldn't take care of. We didn't feel the need to use the machine since it was minimal. The beds were really comfortable and the kitchen well equipped. Complimentary toiletries greeted us in the bathroom and the cabin was always warm and toasty. Our bedroom also had a fireplace and it was quite special to fall asleep with the glow of the flames filling the room each night. The upstairs bedroom has two twin beds underneath ceiling windows that give view to the stars and tall trees above (which my twins LOVED). There is also a queen bed behind a folding screen for which my mother in law said was incredibly comfortable and a double bed behind a set of curtains which my son also slept soundly on. Both the upstairs bathroom and downstairs are full baths and have large, deep claw foot tubs with no lack of hot water for a good, long soak. The views from our cabin and from the grounds are absolutely breathtaking. This is a special spot and you can hear a pin drop almost anyplace you hike, walk or sit. We also spent time at nearby Paul Smiths College making use of the gym (passes provided by WPC allowed free access to the gym, pool, library and grounds) and also at the VIC at Paul Smiths for snowshoeing and hiking (again, free with passes) My kids enjoyed bowling in the antique bowling alley and playing pool while Mom, Dad & Grandma sat by the fire in yet another huge fireplace. They sledding everyday on the grounds behind the Great Room and had a blast. Afterwards, they went inside the Great Room and made themselves a hot cocca on the Kerig machine (overseen by Grandma), provided for guests (we bought the pods by mistake thinking they were pouches from Aldi in Saranac Lake but WPC provides coffee and tea for the Kerig for guests). We sat by yet another huge fireplace in the Great Room while reading and playing chess. Yes, there is internet but often sketchy at times since we were deep in the woods, which for us, was desirable. When my husband needed to catch up on work and needed a dependable internet connection, he just popped down the road to the Paul Smiths Library which he viewed as an adjunct office. The same as President Coolidge did in 1926 as I learned from reading a book by Howard Kirschenbaum from the cute, little gift shop just off the Great Room. This place is just pure magic. I've never been to a place more quiet and Tim, the innkeeper and the entire staff go above and beyond to maintain this sense of peace and quiet throughout the camp. Cars are parked nearby but not in the main camp and you barely can hear anyone else in camp during your stay. There was 2 foot of snow on the ground for our Thanksgiving stay week and it was delightful to be there in a winter like setting. It was cold but not windy at all and totally fine with layers. The air is clean and crisp and a perfect spots for viewing the stars. We have already booked a return stay for April 2019 for the school holiday week in the same cabin and cannot wait to return. Everything was simply perfect here.
