On the Grid : Whitespace

"They say that designers love whitespace. Whitespace gallery is a standout space showcasing ever engaging work from Atlanta’s contemporary art community. The intimate garden setting is mixed with raw brick interiors that make for a curiously inspiring experience. And don’t miss Whitespec, their companion gallery across the courtyard." - Brand Bird

Been coming here for decades now. I miss living just blocks from here. Always interesting installations and a very intimate venue.

White Space is like a secret garden. I have never been disappointed by an exhibit or had a boring conversation with anyone there.

One of the most unique spots in Atlanta, this art gallery is a must see. The artwork is spectacular as well.

Had a great experience at the galley a while back. Looking forward to returning and seeing new work. Well put together experience in back of private residence, lovely.

This gallery is worth the stop. It's truly Art for Art's sake. We love coming here whenever we're nearby. I can say it will likely be the the most interesting of your gallery stops, always inspiring a conversation.

Favorite Gallery in ATL! Susan Bridges has renovated the old carriage house and other small buildings surrounding her picturesque 19th Century Victorian home and gardens. It is a charming & intimate setting that is inviting for anyone and everyone. Susan and her team do a phenomenal job curating local, national, and international artists (including those in school) that enrich our lives with their creations. As an avid supporter of the arts for decades, Susan has perfected her own art of sharing art with Atlanta and promoting artists well.

Whitespace is a place of continuous excellence. It strives to represent its artists honestly and sincerely, and endeavors to host as much of the local community as possible. Any visit to them is ever a pleasure, and there is always something new to do and fun to see. Their events are excellent, their shows are superb, and there is no better gallery in all of Atlanta.

Yelp
Located in a carriage house on Edgewood Ave in Inman Park, Whitespace is a small art gallery that showcases some of the better local talent. I went there to see a photographic exhibition by Decatur artist Conne Thalken, who - full disclosure - is a friend. Her work is excellent, of course, but this review is for the gallery. Whitespace is inside a carriage house behind an old home near where Euclid Ave splits off Edgewood. The gallery has two medium-sized rooms designed to hang art work or host an installation. It's intimate, but still large enough for a fair-sized opening. I like the character inside the space and the Inman Park location adds considerable ambiance. It's a great place to see art. Parking is not abundant with but a few spaces inside the grounds. If attending an opening, you'll need to park on the street, which isn't a big problem in this area.

Yelp
Following a small plan for "project Valentina yelps about art galleries in the ATL," here's my second review on the subject matter! In this opportunity I'm going to talk about Whitespace, my favorite art gallery in Atlanta! Whitespace was founded by art facilitator and connoisseur Susan Bridges, and it's a gem of Atlanta's cultural life. Not only because it's "a unique art venue which represents emerging and established contemporary artists," as they describe the gallery in their website, but also because their whole space is gorgeous and refined, without being snobbish or pretentious. Every time I plan to go there, I know I'm going to see interesting and carefully curated artwork, while having a wonderful time enjoying both the featured pieces and the place. Whitespace is a delightful cluster of bricks shaped by a front/side garden-patio, a spectacular 1893 house and what I consider a demi-house --where several rooms graciously host the artwork. I strongly recommend you pretty ladies and keen gentlemen interested in the arts, to keep informed of their fun openings through their website http://www.whitespace814.com/. If you catch a form, a color palette, a medium that thrills you, and the opening date related to all previously mentioned and attend it, join their mailing list by signing up in their reception. By the by, their openings are usually FABULOUS celebrations. Back in July 2007, they had a show featuring womanhood through the figure of Frida Khalo (Viva La Frida), where they showcased painting, photography, sculpture (featuring a very impressive cake-sculpture that was eaten afterward), performance and video. The party they put together for the opening included a beautiful candlelit flower altar that welcomed the public, right next to a chic "margarita" open bar, some delicious ouer d'oeuvres, and a burlesque live show by Atlanta's cabaret dancers the Dames AFlames (hot stuffff! http://www.damesaflame.com/peek2.htm). It was great and multilayered. I'm sure it'll be always great, and that they will have plenty of superb, five-star exhibits throughout the year!

Yelp
This gallery is a work of art in itself! The space is so cozy and inviting. Owner Susan Bridges turned the carriage house behind her Inman Park Victorian into one of the least pretentious art spaces in the city. Her eye for new talent is unmistakable and her shows rotate quickly, so you can stop by pretty much any weekend and see something new and exciting.

Yelp
I certainly don't know as much as Valentina on whitespace, but I have been to a few openings here and always have a nice time. Last night I attended the "Feeding Desire" opening, which was great as it focused on my beloved food. The art was cool, the space is very unique and accessible. The outdoor reception was lovely under the old trees of Inman Park. It's just a great place to see art. And they always have a good combination of pricey and affordable things. I appreciate that. So we saluted the steak and ate cookies that looked like steak, and rubbed shoulders with an ecelctic crowd. Definitely always worth the weekday jaunt.
