9 Best BBQ in Nashville | Condé Nast Traveler

"Whitt’s 25 locations are frequented by hungry folks that want a standardized, yet no-less tasty BBQ meal. This location, just off bustling Charlotte Avenue in West Nashville, is a drive-through and pick-up type of place. There is literally nowhere to sit, so plan to eat in the car or out in nearby Centennial Park. Go for excellent ribs, wings, pulled pork, and BBQ chicken, served with all the accoutrements (mac and cheese, potato wedges, cole slaw, and baked beans)—with soda and sweet tea to wash it down." - Kristin Luna, Margaret Littman

I use Whitt’s for all my events but using them for my daughter’s wedding this past weekend couldn’t have been a better decision! They were early for our scheduled delivery time and everything I had requested for our baked potato bar was there. Not one thing had been missed and their “smaller” potato was still huge!! Our wedding guests (most from out of state) raved about the food. I just wanted to say THANK YOU Brian for always making working with you a pleasure. I highly recommend Whitt’s in Belle Meade!

Google
Overpriced and Terrible BBQ. First point they listed items on the menu they don't sell. Second, the quality of the food is awful the pork and turkey were both dry as ash had no flavor, no seasonings, and no smoke rings say just barely for the pork. Additionally the turkey had a metallic taste similar to potted poultry products. The sides I received was pickled cabbage posing as coleslaw and instant mac & cheese from a #10 can. The only descent item was the buns clearly sourced locally from an off brand bakery. Anyone who as rated this higher than a single star is clearly a palateless sheep or really enjoys vinegar and dry flavorless meat.

Google
For us Wednesday’s have become Whitt’s Days because the incredible discounted offers on both their individual pork sandwiches and their family pork packs of at least $2 per item! The pork pack comes complete with 1 lb of pork bbq, one large side and a pack of eight buns. We usually get the green beans which are southern style and cooked until tender. They have both tomato based and vinegar based mild and hot sauces. Our favorites are the vinegar based. Good desserts as well! A fully loaded pork bbq sandwich includes slaw, pickles and mayo! They also have great baked potatoes loaded with turkey! 😋

Google
Lots of value for the price and quality. I get the food for a church group and everyone enjoys the meal. I like it personally. I am planning a special birthday party and will be having Whitts for supper. I appreciate the ongoing help from Brian.

Was in town for a conference and had the opportunity to speak with a wonderful woman from the tourism office. Asked her where the best BBQ in Nashville was and she pointed me to Whitt's. It did not disappoint at all!

Google
Used Grubhub to order. Sorry wait for the food even though it was the middle of dinner time and busy traffic. Will definitely do it again

Google
Staple in our home! The loaded baked potatoes are huge! I get their delicious pork on mine... They are drive through and counter service, no seating. Very fast meals to take home still hot. After 30 years of being a customer, still my favorite in Nashville! (They have awesome Nashville hot chicken too) Their prices are very reasonable as well.

Google
Best pulled pork sandwich around. Their vinegar based sauce is nothing short of phenomenal. Great sides. All of this has been my opinion for many years. Best BBQ around. Wings are top-notch also. Go on Wednesday and get the $2 off special pork sandwich, hold the mayo, add vinegary sauce....best ever.

Yelp
We went here for the first time after driving past it and realizing we had nothing at home for lunch. I got the ribs and my husband got the pulled pork sandwich, he was a little bummed out that his sandwich was really small and didn't come with fries or anything but I was pretty happy with my ribs. They fell off the bone and were really tender and flavorful, I was definitely satisfied. I also really liked that they had some holiday art by one of the girls who worked there displayed outside where you ordered, though it would have been nice if they had been open to other artists putting their work there. They made it pretty clear that they weren't. The staff were pretty nice and the food was good, we didn't expect it to be a drive thru/order out place, but we were happy that it was since we live just down the road and our food didn't feel super cold when we got home. The service was fast and helpful. This is definitely a good place to go if you're in a rush and don't want the standard fast food options. They're also very reasonable priced ($12 got us a half rack of ribs and a sandwich). I'd definitely go there again.

Yelp
It was pretty standard in-house BBQ. The bbq was cooked good and the sides were good but there wasn't anything that separated it from anywhere else. I had the wings which were very good. They separated the review. They were cooked good and had a great flavor. I had the rib plate and the ribs were average. They had a good tug but not a great smoke flavor. We also had the turkey which was cooked to temp but didn't have a flavor that was distinct. I was really anticipating the cornbread but got an end piece that was over cooked. Overall, the BBQ was good but not great.

Yelp
I keep hoping for something unique, but alas! ... not here (or any of the Whitt's chain). For starters... This is consistent, but fairly run-of-the-mill barbecue. OK for a quick lunch or dinner if you don't want to cook at home or don't have time to smoke your own (no pun intended). Wings were tender and tasty, but minimal seasoning - mostly black pepper. ( Still enjoyed them, but you need to add your own sauce if you want to "up" the game a bit. Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich (not at all locations) - lasting heat but doesn't quite hold up to the Nashville Hot standard. (Basically this is "pulled" fowl - chicken? or turkey?) Mayo and pickle temper the heat but it still lingers a bit. But not really, really hot. Turkey "pulled" and dry (Sauce they provided was vinegar-based) Pork "chopped" and dry but with decent smoke flavor Baked beans tasted like they were right out of the can - minimal additional seasoning, if any Cole Slaw - vinegar style but rather bland (although my wife liked it) Mac & Cheese - creamy and ok. Kids should love it Potato Salad - (IMHO - Amish or German Style) big mustard flavor which I truly enjoyed "CornLight" (?) bread - a heavy chuck of baked dough that was reminiscent of pound cake...but not as sweet nor savory Baked Potato - Ginormous!!! Now, here is where you get your money's worth...and (if you check the convenient nutrition chart provided on their website)....280 calories for plain and up to 900 calories for pork-topped. Then again....who's counting calories? FYI: I ordered using their convenient smartphone APP....very easy ....BUT does not include any special items that are available at some locations.

Yelp
After driving by for the last 2 years and seeing the sign for "family dinner special" on Wednesdays, I decided to go in and try it. Ordered the Nashville Hot Chicken special. I was expecting real pieces of chicken, instead got a pint container of some sliced chicken something not sure of what it was mixed together with other ingredients. They included a dozen hamburger buns and a pint of cole slaw. The chicken(?) was not edible to anyone in the family. Threw it all out, a total waste of money.

Yelp
Reasonable and good. Great choice for a party. Corn light bread and banana pudding are great additions. I have been to 2 parties that used Whitts. Amount of food was more than adequate and everyone enjoyed it.

Edward N.

Yelp
I am SO glad I don't work for whitts barbecue any more.they just threw me away with a one week notice.what a waste of 14 years.

Colin S.

Yelp
Great eating, The tea is great too. I would give the window worker a raise. He was a cute, sweet, tall, blonde boy and deserves more pay. I gave him a 15 dollar tip for the culture. The food was good too.

Yelp
Let me ask you one question: do ever see wood smoke coming out of that roof of theirs? No? THEN ITS NOT REAL BARBECUE!! Their food is either BOILED or STEAMED if not smoked in a real cooker. REAL barbecue is smoked for hours until perfect. Their food actually made my friend get food poisoning the last time he went.DO NOT go here. The food is AWFUL.

Lori W.

Yelp
The last 2 times we've been to this Whitt's, they got our order wrong. Today, yelp says open til 5pm, however my husband pulls in at 4:30pm and they are already closed!!! So frustrating!!!
google avatar

Steven B.

Yelp
Been eating here my entire life. I'm almost 50. I love their pulled pork sandwiches with coleslaw. Dump some of the baked beans and sauce on top and perfection. The family meal is the way to go if you're gonna order more than two sandwiches. Pulled turkey sandwiches are excellent too. This is Nashville bbq. Not Martin's or Edleys....
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
Disclaimer: I am from Texas and I enjoy Texas style BBQ. I was passing through Nashville and decided to try some Tennessee style BBQ. Overall, it was underwhelming. I got the pork plate. The pork was seasoned, but not a lot. The BBQ sauce was vinegar based and average. The mac and cheese and baked beans were also average. Overall, an average meal for a decent deal. I wouldn't have it again if I were in town.

Yelp
Our absolute favorite barbecue place. Consistent, Delicious, and they never fail to have prompt and friendly service. Something to suit anyone's tastes and a welcome member of the community businesses. You can not go wrong with Whitt's pulled pork sandwich with choices of sauce with or without slaw. I only wish it was closer to my house.

Yelp
I love Whitt's BBQ. Fantasize about it. Crave it. Especially this location. It's fast, cheap, and easy, and just the way I like it. This location is drive-thru or walk-up only. Because of this location, I never took 40 home from school or work, ever. Instead, I took 70S so that I could drive by here everyday. Even if I wasn't stopping, just driving by made my day better. I love you Whitt's! I have probably eaten over 300 BBQ sandwiches at this very location (at least 2, sometimes 3, almost every Wednesday for several years...), and many have been consumed in my car because I simply could not wait to drive the few miles home to enjoy them. I get the pulled pork sandwich (no sauce), just coleslaw and a pickle, on a hamburger bun. The pulled pork is always super juicy. This isn't a BBQ place that you go for if you want a great sauce, or ribs, but for what it is, it's the best. Whitt's BBQ was well worth the 20 lbs that settled (and apparently secured permanent residence) on my behind while living in Nashville. Because now whenever I catch sight of my butt in the mirror, I think of Whitt's and it makes it all better. ***Please don't judge Whitt's on the airport location, that one is BAD.***
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome. Their BBQ pork shoulder sandwiches are served with slaw and pickles --- delicious. Good sweet tea.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
If you want a quick, cheap, authentic BBQ meal, Whitt's is the place. Their BBQ is synonymous with mid-tn southern BBQ. The pulled pork sandwich is served without sauce so you can taste the smoke flavor (you may want to add the hot sauce for flavor). In comparison to Corky's, Neely's, or Strouds, Whitt's is near the top. We've eaten at Whitt's for the past 10 years on a regular basis at their Bellemeade location (drive-thru) and at the airport, and look forward to eating there for the next 40 years!
google avatar

Jim H.

Yelp
I enjoy the BBQ, but I love tWings. Spicy without all the sauce, and not fried! Oh, love the cornbread too.
google avatar

Wayne H.

Yelp
Decent BBQ. I don't know why people here like it so much. Nashville BBQ is vinegar based and I think there is a very good reason why Nashville BBQ is not well known. The pork is satisfyingly crumbly, but really half the fun is the sauce. The buns, coleslaw, Brunswick stew and other side dishes are not really worth mentioning. Really, that's Nashville BBQ sauce? Prices are reasonable, and I see a lot of these restaurants around town and in BNA airport. Try it if you want.

Cae H.

Yelp
The location is very close to my office and the service is always great and fast. Just wish that my food was warmer. I always have to come back to the office and warm the food up.

Yelp
I'm a pretty big fan of Bar B Cutie down the road. I recently tried Whitts after a long abscence. From my experience, the meat is more robust and juicy at Whitts. Its all about the sauce. Whitts does seem to focus on vinegar based sauces, however whatever sauce I had was more of the sweet variety. That said, Whitts does a great job of making quality, tasty BBQ. Wow...and that Wed night family special or sandwhich is prettty sweet. (thanks to Misty for the tip) PS. I think this address is wrong. It should be Nolensville Rd. Its near Harding Road, but its not Harding Pike to my knowledge.
google avatar

Karen W.

Yelp
Whitt's motto is "We aren't fancy, just plain good!" That pretty much sums up my experience here. For reasonably priced, delicious bbq look no further. The pulled pork is tender, with lots of flavor. I'm glad they don't smother the pork with super sweet bbq sauce, since that would distract away from the taste of the pork itself. The cole slaw is peppery and tangy. It's vinegar based, which I prefer over the mayo-based slaws. The baked beans were also very good, not too sweet. A family meal is a very good deal and will feed a lot of people.
google avatar

Rob W.

Yelp
The pulled pork was just OK, not special. The sides were very nice. I would say it rates 3 stars at most.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
I think Whitt's gets picked on a lot, but I'm a fan. It has consistently good BBQ. It's pulled pork or turkey with a vinegar-based BBQ sauce, so if you're a fan of the wet stuff, this isn't it. They have locations all over Nashville, and it's nice to support a home-grown chain. This location is in Belle Meade on your way out of town before the 100/70 split. Like most of the locations I've seen, it's drive in or walk-up; there's not any seating that I can remember. If you're looking to feed a crowd, they have great family packs with everything you need: BBQ, buns, and sides. I think my only real complaint with Whitt's is its coleslaw. I don't mind a vinegar-based slaw like Whitt's has, but if I've eating BBQ, I like a nice mayonnaise-based slaw. Their other sides are perfectly fine, though -- beans and some good potato salad. They also have a baked potato loaded with BBQ that I've heard is good, but I've never tried. If you're in the mood for BBQ, try Whitt's out. There's bound to be a location near you.
google avatar

Robin L.

Yelp
Decent 'cue. We had the turkey and pork, with coleslaw and baked beans. For newbies to town, this place is take-out/drive through only. No eating in at any of their locations. If you wanna try the ribs it's only offered on Fri/Sat. Will come back.
google avatar

Aaron D.

Yelp
This is a tough one. As others have said, service is very fast and reasonably friendly. The meat (pork) was certainly tender and juicy, but I didn't feel like it had much flavor on its own. The vinegar-based sauce (NC style?) was interesting, but I definitely like tomato-based sauces a lot better. Maybe the vinegar-based sauce will grow on me if I give it a few more tries. Cole slaw seemed fresh and refreshing, but was definitely very vinegary. Potato salad I thought actually tasted pretty good, but seemed a bit too crunchy. I wasn't a big fan of the mac n cheese side. One sandwich (with the mac side) and one platter was about $11. Would I go back? Definitely. Was I blown away? Nope. I'd say this Whitt's deserves 3.5 stars, but to prevent against star inflation I'm rounding down in this case. ps - Like Misty, I wish Whitt's would ditch some of the Styrofoam in favor of recyclable plastic.

Kacie W.

Yelp
I will not go back. This was the first time I have even attempted BBQ since February due to poor quality. I was hoping that this location would be better. They forgot the sauce, they forgot one sandwich, they forgot baked beans, all of which I paid for. I am done, I would not recommend Whitt's to anyone

Leslie W.

Yelp
The pulled BBQ is just okay. Skip unless you are really hungry and this is your only option. The sides are pretty blah. (Some are awful.) Skip them. All of them. Seriously tasteless. The ribs can be good one day, greasy as heck the next. They leave the membrane on, which is gross, and is the difference between great ribs and just-okay ones. (Take the membrane off, guys.) The sauce is wonderful -- good balance of tang and spice, and not too sweet. ****Smoked Wings -- best in town. That's right, smoked, not fried. This is what you go for. Balanced heat is provided by the seasonings, not sauce. (Not sauced or breaded is what I look for.) Some days they can be dry from sitting around, but it you catch them at the right time, they're nirvana. Dipping sauce is just your run-of-the-mill commercial salad dressing in little packs. They don't even bother to make their own. But I like these wings with no dipping sauce at all. Wings are smallish, but no smaller than those from your average chain restaurant. Ask for a bag, otherwise they'll just shove the containers at you. Seriously, they're trying to save the extra 2 cents per order? (You don't want to end up with the stuff all over your car, or spilled out on the driveway.) We shouldn't have to ask for bags. They close early on holidays, but never at the same time. This year it was 3:00 on Memorial Day, but 2:00 on the Fourth, so we missed out thinking they were closing at 3. The website needs to post the holiday hours. So, for my money, it's 5 stars for the wings, 4 for the sauce, 2-3 for the ribs, 2 for the pulled Q, and zero for everything else.

Greg C.

Yelp
If I were ever sent to prison and was about to be executed, this would be part of my Death Row Dinner. Whenever I fly into Nashville, I always go to the one on Nolensville Road or wherever on the drive home. And when I fly back home to L.A., I eat a sammich in the airport and get the freezer pack stuff to mow on back in the 323. I think they call it Whitt's because all the bible-thumpers would get pissed at a sign in brown and yellow script that said "Fuck Yah" BBQ.
google avatar

Katie M.

Yelp
Great BBQ, convenient and a drive-thru! I prefer their pulled pork to some of the trendiest BBQ places in Nashville right now. Only thing that I don't recommend is their potato salad.
google avatar

Carol Ann S.

Yelp
Just had Whitt's for the first time ever and I must say I will be a repeat customer after this fabulous experience. The cornbread was moist and delicious as was the pulled pork. Dare I say the best I've had in Nashville or anywhere else for that matter. Friendly staff and super cheap, but not cheap on quality or quantity. You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Lisa W.

Yelp
It's ok. I have to add a disclaimer that I grew up in a BBQ town. Whitts is ok as a fast drive through for dinner but it's just not great BBQ.

Prudence S.

Yelp
Whitt's is touted as the best barbeque in Nashville so we decided to give it a go last night. Meh. We ordered the pulled pork family meal that serves 8. We had four small to normal sized adults eating and four small children (7, 5, 3, 1) to feed. The meal comes with two sides and twelve buns. When I saw the amount of food I knew I would need to serve some other items in order to make sure everyone was full. So I made a salad and served some cut up honeydew along with it. This satisfied everyone although I think they were not happy with the tiny portion of baked beans and macaroni and cheese they received. The pork was very tender and a little salty. Other than that it was not particularly smokey or flavorful. They do not serve barbeque sauce with the meat, rather a sort of vinegary liquid. We all took a whiff and decided to use some hickory bbq sauce I had in the fridge. The drive thru option is very convenient and service was very quick. They do not offer any seating. I guess we might try other menu items in the future, but we all prefer Jim 'N Nicks.
google avatar

Vanessa G.

Yelp
I'm going to have to echo Greg C on this one. Whitt's does not disappoint. From the ice in their sweet tea to the vinegar slaw, this is what I'm talking about when I talk about southern bbq. Pulled pork stuff baked potato? Yes please. Side of slaw and beans? Don't mind if I do. It's good, it's cheap. go there now.
google avatar

Nick N.

Yelp
I love BBQ and Whitt's always seems to be able to produce a great tasting bbq every time I am there!!! I have been to several locations and this is the one I go to most as it is easy to get too on my way home. The food is always delivered fast and is always has the same great taste no matter which day of the week I go. They offer various specials such as family meals, and pulled pork sandwich day, rib day, and I have tried them all! All are great! Can't say it is the best bbq I have ever had but it certainly is the most consistent for being always good. I highly recommend their loaded baked potatoes!!!
google avatar

Natalie D.

Yelp
I just got back from 7 weeks in Ecuador, where believe it or not the food tastes like absolutely nothing, and when I walked off of the plane I bought two pork BBQ sanduches (espanol) and my experience eating them could be compared to a religious moment or maybe seeing your new born baby for the first time. I may have actually shed a tear. I know they say all the local places blah blah blah, this may be a chain, but they are reliable, Whitt's has never let me down.

Phil R.

Yelp
Review based on pulled pork sandwich. My favorite BBQ is pulled pork and baby back ribs. So I base BBQ on these two items. When her during the week and had the pulled pork. It happened to be on special. $1.65 a sandwich. The deal is outstanding and the sandwich is very good. I think the pulled pork in TN is the outstanding! I will have to try the ribs sometime. Had ribs all over the country and the Memphis style is by far the in the country. The service was friendly and fast. Always a plus. So for a real good pulled pork for a good value try Whitt's.
google avatar

Bruce M.

Yelp
I say this is a great and cheap way to feed the family and get some great BBQ pork. I did the Family pack deal. WOW.. a great deal IMHO for a meal with leftovers Ok.. Lied ... I added a rib slab. Nice and friendly crew here in Belle Meade. Makes me want to be sure to come back to Nashville. OH.. and yes.. the food was very delicious. But not from this area... what was the vinegary sauce for??
google avatar

Deanna C.

Yelp
I dont know if it was the time of day but I did not care for this. The service was good. The meat was not very seasoned and the sides were not either. I have just had better that's all.
google avatar

Kaylin O.

Yelp
The best pulled pork sandwich I've ever tasted. This pertains to the one at the Airport. On a layover in Nashville, I decided to try this place out. Although it looked dried and unappetizing, I'm glad I decided to try it out. It was super moist and delicious, perfectly seasoned.

Laurie W.

Yelp
Excellent BBQ-ask for all 3 sauces in a cup. The hot is hot (my husband eats hot stuff and said it was hot)! This is just a drive-thru or walk up, but it's worth it. We took our up the street to the Belle Meade Plantation and at tailgate style Before we went in. The baked potato is a meal in itself. Definitely a place to go when in Nashville.

Sue S.

Yelp
BBQ is always good. Thanks for finally serving the thick sauce with the family pack. I am sure you have to ask for it .but we like it much better than vinegar type. Also I think your bake beans are better than they use to be must have changed brands.. Keep up the good service there.

S G.

Yelp
Whitt's makes a great pork barbecue sandwich on cornbread. I'm partial to their hot barbecue sauce, and usually skip the vinegar-based sauce. I've never understood why they don't have a dining room. Their to go service is very quick though, so generally worth it.
