Why House, Talpe, near Galle, Sri Lanka - Explore & Book

"Turning off the highway towards Why House, we were taken back in time to a genteel world of colonial elegance and laid-back village life. This tranquil hideaway near Galle in southern Sri Lanka is very special indeed. The rooms are surrounded by palm trees and acres of lush gardens, where ripe fruit and spices scent the air. The buildings’ graceful style is cool and calming, while the staff are warm and welcoming, greeting visitors with a glass of fresh juice and broad smiles. Because there are so few rooms, they are able to give excellent service (including an amazing welcome ceremony!) and you'll feel instantly at home. Staying here is fun: it's just a 15-minute walk to the beach (complimentary tuk-tuks are also available), there are thrice-weekly aqua-aerobics sessions in the pool and daily afternoon tea and cake (included in the rates), and you can easily travel to Galle and beyond. The food is excellent, and with a pool and grounds to explore, you don't even need to leave if you're feeling lazy. It's popular with families, and also attracts couples and honeymooners; all in all, a wonderfully peaceful base for a beach holiday on Sri Lanka's south coast. Highs Family-friendly with lovely pool, interconnecting rooms, kids menu and large gardens filled with butterflies, birdsong and snooze-inducing hammocks Warm and friendly service from Henrietta and her team (including Nigella the sausage dog) Spacious beautiful rooms, all with high ceilings and antique furniture; we particularly liked the 2 suites in the main house, with their 4-poster beds and glass-roofed bathrooms Delicious food with special requests and diets accommodated Great base for exploring the coast and historic Galle Lows The hotel is located just inland, but it's only a 15-minute walk to the beach, and the rural surroundings of verdant rice paddies offers a more authentic slice of Sri Lanka Guests at the hotel may hear barking from local dogs at night Strict cancellation policy" - Ben Reed

We had a wonderful stay at Why House which we couldn’t fault. Henrietta was a wonderful host, made us feel right at home and had wonderful recommendations. The food and service from Muthu and the team was exceptional. The hotel is beautifully decorated and the gardens and pool are lovely to relax in - we also joined in with aqua aerobics which was great fun and enjoyed watching the monkeys in the trees around the pool. We hope to return one day and would definitely recommend both the hotel and the restaurant to anyone visiting the area.

We just celebrated our 25th Anniversary in Why house and this is by far the best party Venue ever. All our Friends and family from different parts of the world raved about the place and loved the experience so much. The food, the service and the beautiful lush surroundings. Thank you Why House for everything. ❤️

We stayed here for 2 nights as the first stop of our Sri Lanka tour and it was the perfect place to settle into Sri Lankan life. ||Mathu and all the staff went above and beyond. Our room was beautiful and the beds comfy. The bathroom had all the amenities you could want. ||The breakfast looked over the stunning pool and the options were endless, fresh fruits and granola, avo toast, power bowl, dahl. ||The hotel is family friendly and they were so accommodating and kind to our children.

We (granny, daughter and granddaughter) all loved our stay in Henrietta's beautiful and serene hotel. I say hotel, it was more like a stay with a friend in a tranquil home from home, surrounded by multiple trees and plants. We even saw monkeys one day. All our needs were catered for, even to finding some chocolate croissants for the three year-old. The food was locally sourced and freshly prepared with Henrietta overseeing the menus and trying new recipes. Afternoon tea could be taken in the shade by the pool. Coming back to Why House after a hectic trip out, was like coming home. Magical!

After a multi-stop tour round Sri Lanka we knew we wanted to end up at the Why House. Why? Tranquility, a warm welcome from Henrietta and the great staff, the beautiful environment and rooms, and the proximity to beaches and Galle. Our kids adore it and were so excited to be back. ||It didn’t disappoint. Henrietta greeted us like long lost friends, the food was even better than previous visits (the tuna and the Weligama chicken were sensational) and our double room villa near the pool was genuinely stunning.||Things don’t stand still despite the timeless, elegant feel of the place - and since our last visit the gym had arrived plus Netflix in the rooms (not that we spent much time there). ||The atmosphere and easy nature of the place are impossible to better. Nothing is any trouble, you can be as sociable or antisocial as you want to be, you can chill for the day and eat all meals there, or can just use it as a base. All in all it’s a slice of heaven at the tip of a magical island. ||We are already planning to return in two years time.

It’s safe to say we couldn’t have enjoyed our time at Why House any more than we did. The idyllic setting – surrounded by luscious Sri Lankan greenery and drenched in sunlight – was everything we could’ve hoped for for an incredibly relaxing stay. The staff were as hospitable as they come, and they were particularly sweet with my 1-year old baby and my friends’ 9-month old. The food was delicious and it was unsurprising to hear that the proprietor trained at Le Cordon Bleu. Beyond orchestrating the food, she was a wonderful host and looked after us attentively and thoughtfully, adding so much to our experience. We can’t wait to return.

It’s a beautiful property and my deluxe room was exceptional. The service was great and everyone working there was very friendly. The food was all absolutely delicious and it felt like nothing was too much trouble for the people working there. I felt very well looked after and my room was amazing.

Utter heaven! This boutique hotel within beautiful gardens has rooms in the main building and tucked away around the grounds 15 minutes from the hustle and bustle or Galle. Incredibly comfortable rooms, private terraces, and a large enticing pool. This was the highlight of our trip where we totally relaxed knowing we were in good hands. Henrietta and her wonderful team ensure nothing is too much trouble with their attention to detail and utter charm. We had to tear ourselves away.
