We knew Wicked Campers was the budget option, but unfortunately, our experience left us disappointed.
First, the positive: the receptionist at the Cairns office was absolutely lovely. She was welcoming, friendly, and helpful, truly a 5/5 experience from her.
The van itself, however, was another story. We don’t mind renting an older vehicle as long as it’s safe and functional, but the condition was poor. The mattress was an extremely thin red leather one (not ideal for the tropical heat) and more importantly, the van had clearly not been cleaned after the previous renter. We found rubbish in the drawers, under the seats and bed, and even leftover clothes. Each time we opened the side door or trunk, cockroaches scattered, which was unsettling and suggested a bigger pest problem at the depot.
Mechanically, the van didn’t inspire much confidence either. On the first drive we noticed an unusual noise from the back; when we raised it with the mechanic, we were brushed off with a dismissive “it’s just the muffler.” Later, the engine light came on, and though the insurance company and WC customer service reassured us it wasn’t urgent, it’s not exactly the kind of thing you want to see at the start of a road trip. By the end of the trip, the engine brake was also making concerning noises downhill.
In the end, we were relieved the van held together long enough to get us back safely, but the lack of cleanliness, the pests, and the dismissive attitude toward our concerns made the experience stressful rather than carefree. We still enjoyed our holiday, but we wouldn’t rent with Wicked again.
