I recently hired the Desert Sand 4x4 with my uncle for a bush adventure around the Cairns region, and it exceeded all expectations. The vehicle was in excellent condition—reliable, clean, and ready for the off-road! As someone used to bigger camping setups with the kids, I needed something more compact for this trip, and this camper was perfect. It came fully equipped with everything we needed: a compact kitchen, fridge, comfy chairs, and two rooftop popup tents that were super easy to set up and pack down. It made going off-grid effortless and enjoyable. Driving it was a dream—very comfortable and easy to handle on all terrains. We absolutely loved it and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an adventurous yet hassle-free way to explore the outdoors!

We hired an older campervan for a long weekend to explore Cairns, Cape Tribulation, and the rainforest. Even though it was manual, it was easy to drive, and we had no issues with the van. The pick-up team was friendly and provided all the information we needed. The set-up was convenient – we only needed our sleeping bags, as cooking equipment was already included, which allowed us to prepare our own meals. It would have been helpful to have a few basics provided, such as a sponge or cloth, a little washing-up liquid, and some salt and pepper, so we didn’t need to buy whole packages (we got that for our 5 days trip with their competitors). That said, the rental price was very affordable, so we can’t ask for much more. Overall, it was a great experience with Wicked Campers.

We hired a 4WD from Wicked Campers in Cairns for our trip to Cape York and had a great experience overall. The vehicle performed perfectly — no issues through the Bloomfield Track, multiple river crossings, and all the way to the Tip. The rooftop tent was comfortable and easy to use, and the built-in fridge was a lifesaver for keeping drinks cold in the heat. It also allowed us to cook a few meals ourselves, which was great given that a lot of the food up north is geared towards tourists, often oily and expensive. Only dropping one star due to a few minor maintenance things like worn tent straps that could use replacing and there was no aerial, so we couldn’t get radio reception in remote areas. But overall, a solid, well-equipped vehicle that we’d recommend to anyone heading up north!

Had a great time on our trip between Cairns and Cape Tribulation in our wicked camper! Van was in good condition and easy to drive. Having the in-built fridge was really helpful and mattress wasnt too bad! Would definitely recommend if you are looking for a cheap and fun way to enjoy Cairns and surrounding areas.

I travelled from Cairns to Brisbane in a Mystery Machine, and since I really liked the service at Campervillage in Cairns, I exchanged it for a Mystery Machine Hightop right away in Brisbane and continued my trip to Melbourne. Both the Brisbane Campervillage and the Mystery Machine Hightop were absolutely amazing! As a tip — if you’re a backpacker travelling between regions, I highly recommend choosing the Hightop model because it has plenty of storage space. The standard Mystery Machine can fit two large bags and two adults at most. I had quite a few bags, so when I switched to the Hightop, it felt so much more comfortable and spacious.

We rented the D5 Delica from Wicked Campers in Cairns and had a fantastic experience. Neil was great – really accommodating and took the time to explain how everything worked. The van itself was super practical. The fridge and pantry space were more than enough for our food, and the console fridge plus sliding doors made things really convenient. The mattress was comfortable and the bed was quick to set up each day (though not ideal if you’re over 6ft tall). We took it along the Bloomfield Track and it handled beautifully, even through water crossings. Driving was easy, parking anywhere was no problem, and there was heaps of storage under the bed. The built-in fan was a lifesaver when sleeping on warm nights. Only small downside was that the reverse camera wasn’t working, but it didn’t cause us any issues. Overall, a reliable, comfortable, and fun van for exploring FNQ – highly recommend!

We knew Wicked Campers was the budget option, but unfortunately, our experience left us disappointed. First, the positive: the receptionist at the Cairns office was absolutely lovely. She was welcoming, friendly, and helpful, truly a 5/5 experience from her. The van itself, however, was another story. We don’t mind renting an older vehicle as long as it’s safe and functional, but the condition was poor. The mattress was an extremely thin red leather one (not ideal for the tropical heat) and more importantly, the van had clearly not been cleaned after the previous renter. We found rubbish in the drawers, under the seats and bed, and even leftover clothes. Each time we opened the side door or trunk, cockroaches scattered, which was unsettling and suggested a bigger pest problem at the depot. Mechanically, the van didn’t inspire much confidence either. On the first drive we noticed an unusual noise from the back; when we raised it with the mechanic, we were brushed off with a dismissive “it’s just the muffler.” Later, the engine light came on, and though the insurance company and WC customer service reassured us it wasn’t urgent, it’s not exactly the kind of thing you want to see at the start of a road trip. By the end of the trip, the engine brake was also making concerning noises downhill. In the end, we were relieved the van held together long enough to get us back safely, but the lack of cleanliness, the pests, and the dismissive attitude toward our concerns made the experience stressful rather than carefree. We still enjoyed our holiday, but we wouldn’t rent with Wicked again.

We rented from wicked campers, picking up in Cairns and dropping off in Melbourne. Upon pick up there was a slight error, I booked an automatic vehicle, however a manual was prepared for us. They were able to get another van ready within a few hours and it was an upgrade. The staff in Cairns were extremely helpful and kind. The van has been great so far, we are very happy with the service!
