Wild Blueberry Land – Columbia Falls, Maine - Gastro Obscura

"There is no shortage of bizarre American highway pitstops, but there’s only one that’s in the shape of one of the three fruits native to the United States: the wild blueberry. Just off Route 1 in Columbia Hills, Maine, you’ll find Wild Blueberry Land—a small theme park entirely dedicated to the official fruit of Maine. The park’s main attraction, a large, bright blue geodesic dome, is home to a bakery filled with blueberry pastries, breads, and sweets. The entire park is a bright shade of blue. This seven-acre space is covered with giant marine buoys painted to resemble blueberries and a blueberry-themed mini golf course decorated with a shipwreck, a lighthouse, a grandfather clock, and a large blueberry pie that was once a TV satellite dish. If you win the golf game, you get to take your pick of one of the fresh veggies growing in the patches throughout the grounds of the course. Appropriately, Wild Blueberry Land is run by a baker and a farmer, Dell and Marie Emerson. Dell, a former researcher at the University of Maine’s blueberry farm (the only wild blueberry research farm in the U.S.), cares for the 220-acre Wild Wescogus Berries farm while Marie does the baking. The park is backdropped by Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park and looks out over the Pleasant River. The thin glacial soil of the Emersons’ Wescogus farm (“Wescogus” means “above the water” in the language of the Passamaquoddy Native American tribe) and the northern climate provide the perfect conditions for wild blueberries to flourish. The owners hope that the theme park stands as a dedication to small-scale farming: The park has an educational program that teaches youth about farming, gardening, and preservation, and offers visitors information about the history of agriculture in the area. Today, in addition to snacking on sweet berries, drivers pull off the highway to marvel at the blue land. Even when it’s closed during the winter season, people take pictures by the domed building covered in snow. There are so many pictures of the famous local landmark online, Marie has said, it’s like the Wild Blueberry Land building has its own cult following. Know Before You Go The bakery and theme park is on the corner of Routes 1 and 187. You can't miss the bright blue dome. It's open seasonally and is closed during the winter." - Lauren J Young, hana, basimonica11

This place reminds me of some of the road side attractions along portions of Route 66 no one travels anymore. Clearly once pretty cool it is no pretty rundown and have signs of a once very cool stop is now someones afterthought. Theres an overgrown put put mini golf course and a small exhibit about wild blueberries. We picked up some frozen blueberries to make pancakes with tomorrow morning. Don't miss the giant lobster trap across the street which is almost as stimulating.

This place is so fun!!! Stopped in here en route to Jasper Beach/ Machiasport. Great Maine made gifts and crafts, also plenty of educational information on the heritage of First Nations in Maine, traditional crafts, foods and industries. It is jam packed with interesting historical items! Outside there are fun things for kids (and kid like adults) to play around on and take photos. Wonderful place to add to a road trip or plan a day trip to the area! It's about 1hr 30min from Bangor/Orono or Bar Harbor, and 2-3hrs from Portland, Lewiston/Auburn or Farmington. As a road trip, many pretty back roads, side quests and stops along the way! Plenty of parking, you could safely pull in with a tag along camper or RV. There is a Shell truck stop/convenience store, take out lunch place, camp ground right on the same road, plus many other wonderful places to visit or stay in the area.

Google
Great history of Maine blueberry harvesting over the decades, with displays of tools used and soils for the plants. All kinds of gifts, clothing items, berries, jams, jellies, syrups, and blueberry-related kitsch. This place is the one-stop for all things blueberry.

I love visiting here every year. Very sweet little museum, gift shop and blueberry treats in giant geodesic dome blueberry! They sell very good blueberry ice cream-lemon cookie sandwiches too.

Unfortunately, this place has really gone down hill. A few years ago, they would make the pies right there on site. They no longer do that. Also, the pies are awful. It’s pure sugar and there are barely any berries in the pie and the crust is hard. The place is run down. They had miniature golf but weeds have grown over everywhere. Back in the day, this place was worth a stop. I wouldn’t recommend taking the time to stop unless they start putting effort into the place, inside and out. It’s sad. If you are looking for pies, I suggest Dot’s or Helen’s.

Cute little museum and shop. Best blueberry pie I've ever had!

Google
I’ve been coming to Wild Blueberry Land to buy blueberry pies for about 18 years. Up until this year, the pies were baked right there or you could purchase frozen unbaked ones to bring home and bake. They were fabulous. Well this year that all changed-and not for the better-I might add! The pies are now made & baked in Canada and are shipped frozen to Wild Blueberry Land and they are TERRIBLE!!! The crust is tasteless, thick, &dry. And to top it off-the sales person had the nerve to tell me the pies are baked right down the road at the blueberry farm, (as if I couldn’t see the “made in Canada” in big letters right on the label?) At $24/pie this is such a disappointment. I travel from Bangor, Maine to Columbia Falls, Maine just to buy blueberry pies at Wild Blueberry Land. Never again-they’ve lost my business. The worst blueberry pie ever!

Google
Wild Blueberry Land was even better than I anticipated. They have AMAZING blueberry goods at extremely reasonable prices. Fresh baked goods for cheap, blueberry-themed everything, and a little (somewhat corny) exhibit on the history of wild blueberries in Maine. We left feeling like we got good value for our money, and a little more knowledgeable about wild Maine blueberries. The service was immediate, friendly, and fast and we weren't kept waiting for even a second. The blueberry pie we bought was hot, fresh, and the best pie I've ever enjoyed. The blueberry scone was delightful, and the blueberry muffin was the platonic ideal of a blueberry muffin.

Yelp
This is the ultimate gift shop for Wild Maine Blueberries! There are activities outside for the kids. Plenty of fun photo opportunities, too. Just look for the big blueberry building.

Yelp
You can't visit Wild Blueberry Land without realizing it's a tourist trap. Whether you drive by or seek it out, ya kinda know what you're getting into. The "no pictures" request on the door is--as one can see on social media--a polite, uninformed request. Inside you're forced through a tight maze of shelving as you get to the register. One will find a wide variety of expected offerings (playing cards, blueberry flavored tea, t-shirts, etc.), and some unexpected (hand painted soap dishes, seed packets, etc.). The owner was at the register with only one teenager helping her fill orders for baked goods. I grabbed a bar of blueberry soap, a small, ceramic dish, and asked for two slices of blueberry pie. When we finally made it to the rocky beach we sought, our family opened the boxes to discover a sloppy mess. Still tasted good, but I reflected on the directions the owner was giving and the haphazard nature of the teen, and figured this was the best they could do. The venue is suffering from lack of help (like many of the small Maine towns around the area). A once vibrant mini-golf course is overgrown with weeds and opportunities to visit the blueberry field is unavailable due to staffing shortages. I hope the smaller towns surrounding Bar Harbor do get back on their feet and employers find the help they need to revitalize the area. Until then, however, Wild Blueberry Land will be a quick visit, then on your way to your destination.

Yelp
Silly and touristy. People working there not very friendly just buy your souvenirs and get out. Run down and not that exciting. Used the Porta Potty which is the only plus.

Yelp
Let me start with this: hands down, best blueberry pie I've ever had...any I've tried a lot of blueberry pie! Yes, it very touristy, but that's part of what makes it special. The other part is that the pie and treats are made fresh daily onsite by the owner who's tirelessly working behind the counter. The blueberry scones were incredible as well along with the blueberry ice cream on top of the warm pie. Only thing I wish is that this place was closer to Bar Harbor so we could visit more often!

Amy B.

Yelp
This place is run down and the workers are rude and not friendly. I was disappointed because the gift shop was a joke. Nothing in there worth buying. They no longer sell blueberry-made treats. They had frozen blueberry pie, which didn't look very good. We did buy some chocolates that looked good, but they are not.

Yelp
What a find! The wild blueberry pie was so delicious! Unfortunately the farm had closed for the day due to rain, but we look forward to a tour in the future. The staff was super friendly, and the gifts and pottery for sale were very unique.

Yelp
It is a weirdly cute touristy place. They have almost everything blueberries can make- pie ice cream muffin or cookies. We tried their ugly cute looking $2 wild blueberry oatmeal cookies- a little bit pricey for its taste. It is more of a kids' place because everything is just so touristy and ...tacky.

Yelp
I LOVE a kitschy roadside attraction and this is a good one. Just out of Machias, you'll find Wild Blueberry Land in Columbia Falls. You have to stop there. The decorations, the fact that the building is a giant blueberry...totally awesome. Even better...they have delicious blueberry muffins, scones, coffee cake, smoothies, pie, ice cream and jams. The scones are particularly out of this world. The people who work the window are so nice. Kids and adults alike would love stopping here. It brings a big smile to your face and will create a lasting memory of your travels.

Yelp
They are doing takeout because of Covid and have a perfect walk up window to serve out of. The service was so kind and informative as they are so knowledgeable about wild blueberries! We had a piece of wild blueberry pie with wild blueberry ice cream and it was FANTASTIC. Their website is fully updated with their Covid hours and make sure you wear a mask when talking to staff cause that's the right thing to do!

Yelp
Jam spread is thin syrup and the blueberry scone was not a scone . It tasted like a pop tart pancake. Thin like a pancake with a sugar icing. Weirdest scone I have had. Store is over priced and needs a cleaning. Tourist trap that doesn't care about repeat business.

Yelp
Behold! A giant blueberry building on the side of the road! Talk about random. We were driving along our route up the east coast and noticed them from afar. Seriously. You can't miss this. It's a great stop for a treat or souvenir. Waking in you are immediately hit with the scent of blueberries. From someone who always thought the blueberry never received enough credit, I was overjoyed! They offer fresh baked blueberry pastries, blueberry jam and more. I was hoping to take some home but the smallest jar they offer was 4 ounces. They have many items to browse and take a gander at. I love this unique place. Instead of a giant ball of twine, how about a giant blueberry! Happy Travels!

Helen L.

Yelp
We finally made it back after two years. We called ahead and ordered two pies. They put them in the oven when we called and we picked up freshly baked blueberry pies. We had slices of pie for dessert tonight and they were fantastic. They do not over sugar the pies, so they are perfect for my taste. The crust is very flaky. They just make really good home made blueberry pies. It was worth the drive. Although it seems like a touristy gimmick, this place really is a quality bakery. If you're in Bar Harbour or anywhere in Maine, it's worth a trip to this area.

Yelp
Super cute little place with very friendly staff! We had a blast Checking this place out! The mini golf course seemed a little overgrown but we had fun taking pictures with all the blueberry themed things!

Yelp
We LOVE Wild Blueberry Land! It is a MUST stop while visiting Downeast Maine! They have the best blueberry crumb pies around! Their scones, cookies and muffins are amazing as well. They also have mini-golf and lots of souvenirs to bring back home. We enjoyed that this is a family-run business and met the owner who was extremely pleasant and accommodating. We will be back again if in the area!

Yelp
Simply the best blueberry pie I've ever had. They sell them cooked or frozen with a crumb or pie crust top. They're the perfect gifts for us to bring home with us!

Yelp
The blueberry scones are TO DIE FOR. This is an adorable, hokey, classic roadside America destination. When in Maine...! Terrific blueberry milkshakes as well!

Yelp
After many years of driving by this place, I finally brought myself to the point where I would stop and go in only because someone I met who frequents WBL indicated that the pies were good and that I just had to order one in advance. I steeled myself to visit the giant blueberry, prepared to walk out ashamed of myself. As I got to the door I was enticed in by the smell of something baking. Yes, this is a tourist trap complete with all things touristy from the under maintained miniature golf course to the blueberry throne for kitschy picture taking. The theme here is blueberry, everything that has anything to do with blueberries. The smell however was of baked goods and in the dessert case were blueberry muffins, blueberry scones, annnnnnnd a blueberry pie! Is it for sale, I asked? Yes, she said! Well, I bought a scone, and the pie. I had a little sticker shock because the pie was $19 but it was full of those tiny wild Maine blueberries. The scone tasted more like a muffin, but the pie was the best, non-homemade blueberry pie from a bakery that I have eaten. So don't be shy, and hope they have a pie with your name on it, unless you want to order ahead. I would come back for the pie, nothing else.

Yelp
We drove past this place on our way to the West Quoddy Lighthouse and it totally caught our eye. After all how could you miss the giant blueberry? After finishing at the lighthouse we made it a point of visiting Wild Blueberry Land. We were expecting a grubby tourist trap filled with junky merchandise. We actually found the complete opposite. The place was filled with real handmade blueberry foods. We asked for two slices of pie but they didn't have any slices available. They suggested we get a whole pie and eat part now and save the rest for later. My wife seemed ok with that but I was still skeptical. While talking with them we discovered that one of the ladies at the counter was the chef. She was rinsing a huge colander of blueberries. She explained how she cooks all her own recipes. Basically everything is made with tons of fresh blueberries from her own farm and very little or nothing of anything else like sugar. So we went for it. We bought a pie and immediately ate half of it. It was fabulous!! We liked it so much we bought three large jars of her various spreads. If you're anywhere near this place, stop in and treat yourself. You deserve it.

Yelp
Very inhospitable owner/operator!! We entered the parking lot today at noon, and found it had the closed sign on the door, even though they're listed as being open from 10-5. There was a person in the bldg, so we called and asked if they'd be opening. The woman very matter of factory stated, no, they weren't ready yet. We drove all the way there, and it would have been nice if she had at least offered to let us in to shop, or at the very least an apology, but we got nothing.

Yelp
This is a wonderfully kitschy little roadside attraction that is an homage to the wild blueberry that grows in abundance in the Downeast region of Maine. A repurposed geodesic dome, painted blue, is adorned with amusing blueberry-themed accoutrements, and inside is a bakery/gift shop dedicated to all things blueberry. Made fresh daily are blueberry scones, muffins and pies; one can also get blueberry tea, soda and juice, and if they are available, fresh blueberries, naturally. It's a fun little place and its owners are as dedicated to and as knowledgeable about the blueberry as it gets. I've driven over a thousand miles, twice, to visit them, and I'd do it again.

Yelp
We stopped here last summer for some Blueberry pie, but the lady behind the counter barked it was cooling. Interesting place to stop, customer service and actual product was underwhelming. I would recommend checking this place out just for the fact it's shaped like a blueberry, but that is all.
google avatar

Carla G.

Yelp
Is it touristy? Yes. Is it fun and hoakie? Yup! We loved stopping by. A great picture opportunity and we found the Maple Blueberry flat scone very tasty. Enjoy a Blueberry float made with blueberry soda and your choice of vanilla or blueberry ice cream. Next time we will try the pie. You can take a photo of your kid S a queen or king too! There's nothing like embarrassing your older child! Too fun
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
Touristy little place you feel like you have to stop at when you have just passed miles of blueberry fields. They make their own everything which is nice. Nice people but the pie didn't taste like much. The mini golf is also in pretty rough shape and $5 pp is a little bit of a rip off. Also there is only a port a potty which is a little surprising for a place that serves snacks and coffee.

Yelp
Drove past the big blue dome, drove several miles down the road, then turned around to go back. Very glad we did. What a cute shop! All the regular tourist stuff - mugs, magnets, etc. But the blueberry pie was amazing! All 4 of my kids liked it. A bit pricey, but worth every penny. If you are traveling Route one, stop by. You will not be disappointed!

Yelp
One of the highlights of our trip to Maine. Everyone there could not have been more pleasant and accomodating. Wonderful baked goods, and the freshest berries! My son fell in love with the blueberry cookies and they even had him wait for the ones coming straight out of the oven. Wouldn't miss a stop here on my next trip!

Cyd R.

Yelp
Best blueberry pie in Maine! We brought home a lattice-top pie from our vacation, warmed it up and OMG! It's worth walking into the place just for the smell alone, but BUY A PIE!!
