5 Beautiful Glamping Retreats in New Zealand - AFAR

"A luxury safari tent on a sprawling 1,700‑acre beef and dairy farm offers total seclusion and sweeping green‑hill views, sleeping two (or up to four with a pullout sofa) and treating guests to thoughtful extras like a welcome kit with s'mores fixings and eco‑friendly toiletries and an enormous en suite bathroom with robes and his‑and‑hers sinks. Campfire cooking is made easy with an outdoor pizza oven, fire pit, and a separate covered kitchen stocked with fresh bread, organic eggs, and herbs, while side‑by‑side outdoor cast‑iron soaking tubs deliver 360‑degree views of the surrounding hills; the property sits near the glowworm caves." - Tracy Ziemer

A 5-star location atop a hill with sweeping panoramic views of sparsely inhabited farmland. (We were in the Pohutukawa one.) It’s so secluded that we didn’t think twice about leaving our car unlocked, our front door open, and walking to the jacuzzi naked. (Though, note to the management team: robes would be a nice touch. Ditto a hair dryer!) The service is also very thoughtful, with a well-stocked kitchen for dinner and breakfast—the sausage was particularly delicious—though we supplemented with groceries we picked up en route. The jacuzzi is spectacular, and I’m sure a big fire would have been too, but we didn’t have time for that, nor the s’more kit they included, to my kids’ dismay. If I were to deduct a star, it would be for the open plan of the structure—there are walls between the four rooms, but they don’t reach the ceiling, so they are purely aesthetic and let all sound travel throughout the house, from other rooms and the bathrooms. I get that there are constraints inherent to a tent design like this, but it’s a significant detail to be aware of if you’re a group that values any semblance of privacy. My family didn’t care much, and luckily no one made too much noise in the night, but it’s perhaps the only drawback.

Absolutely stunning accommodations. We stayed at the Kōwhai tent and it was one of the most thoughtful accommodations we’ve stayed in. From the welcome note, s’mores kit, bubble bath and bath bombs overlooking the amazing rolling hills… A highlight of our New Zealand trip. Host was extremely responsive, and we would recommend this to anyone.

We stayed 26 & 27 May. What a fabulous experience. The location, the view, the luxurious glamping tent was next level comfort (even in a raging storm). We feel so lucky to have had this opportunity to stay. The track to the actual tent is not for the faint hearted. It's a steep 100-meter walking track from the car (which must be 4 wheel or all-wheel drive, the gravel driveway access is steep in spots). This all makes the awesome location even more special. We loved it.

Where to start? This is a must do experience and Emily and Bens vision has turned a working farm into a world class glamping spot right here in the heart of the King Country. They have executed everything with precision and excellence and have raised the bar on how to do glamping. All the little touches and everything so tastefully done. The 360 views are incredible! Some great conversations and memories were created over dinner with the yummiest food! 100% recommend the gourmet dinner- the salads and meat were delicious and loved looking up at the stars from the hot tub and the ambiance of the fire - they have thoughtfully considered everything and would give them 6 stars 🤣 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Amazing views from this cozy little tent atop the hill! They are not joking when they say you need a 4wd vehicle to get there, worth the trek though!

Easily the best accomodation I’ve experienced world wide. A spectacle outlook, hot tub in the rain was amazing. Beds super comfy, fireplace warmed us up nicely. The provision of lots of essential food items and treats was appreciated. A truly remarkable place I cannot recommend highly enough

Unreal. My wife and I weren’t sure if we’d like ‘glamping’, but this ended up being our favorite stay in New Zealand—by far! Gorgeous views, perfect amenities, immaculate maintenance. If you’re on the fence, trust us: it really is this good.
