My dad and I stumbled across Wild On Waiheke by pure providence; we knew we wanted to sample some wines, but we were not planning on visiting more than one vineyard. On the recommendation of a visitor guide, we decided to visit Wild On Waiheke because it was easily accessible via bus line 1 that runs across the western half of Waiheke Island.
I admit that I was not expecting much; we walked across damp dirt and gravel, past archery targets interspersed between rows of grapevines. Following signs, we made our way into the cafe, and bid greetings to the male employee there.
We explained that we were interested in sampling some wines, and were cordially seated and attended to. As other employees emerged from the back rooms, I realized that this experience would be a special one.
My dad started off with testers of two red wines and a Chardonnay; I followed suit, and we quickly agreed that the Chardonnay was quite good. My dad ordered a bottle of the Chardonnay, and we also ordered a plate of their fries and their garlic herb pizza bread. When the food came out, we were blown away by how good it was; I can count on my fingers the number of times I have tasted such excellent fries, and that count formerly consisted of just one finger.
The garlic herb pizza bread was similarly excellent; my dad was concerned that we might not have enough to eat, given that he and I are fairly big eaters; between the food and the drinks we consumed, we were completely satiated for lunch.
I was also intrigued by their craft beers, and ordered a taster of their limited-stock Equinox Pale Ale. I will admit that I do not have a distinguished tongue when it comes to alcohol, but I quite enjoyed how distinctive the Equinox tasted in comparison to the pale ales that I was normally accustomed to. My dad also agreed, remarking on the excellent fruity notes of the craft beer. I ordered a glass of the Equinox and quickly finished it.
The price of our grand lunch was decidedly very reasonable, when we converted it to USD. When we considered that tax was already included in the price, and that tipping was not a normal custom in New Zealand, we almost felt bad for essentially ripping off the establishment (again, in regards to how much the bill would total in the United States). The prices were seriously very good.
The final pillar of excellence was the customer service. From the beginning, every employee greeted us with a smile, even the non-customer-service employees who worked in the back. The owner (or at least, who I presumed to be the owner) chatted us up several times, and we shared details of where we came from and learned more about his establishment. Even as the employees seemed preoccupied with preparing for several large groups of customers, they gladly made time for each of our requests.
If I had to summarize this review into a few words, it would be "absolutely lovely." I am saddened to think that I will likely not be able to come back to this establishment for a very long time, but it is my hope that this review will convince others who are visiting Waiheke Island of New Zealand or even just thinking of visiting to check this place out. It is very accessible by bus; for just $45 New Zealand Dollars you can secure ferry passage from Auckland and all-day bus passage on Waiheke island.
Wild on Waiheke is an A+ establishment and gave us warm memories of New Zealand that we will cherish.
