On the Grid : Wild Rover

"Just off Campbell Street you'll find The Wild Rover - yes that's the right address, no we're not joking, yes that's actually the entrance to a bar. The Rover is a bar that welcomes you in as though you were a regular, despite being 90-95% sure you've never been there before. It's dimly lit, the right amount of brooding, and the kind of place you can imagine a Private Investigator would ask his clients to meet with him/her so as not to draw attention. The bartenders are (without exaggerating) probably the friendliest in Sydney, and they'll have a great new drink suggestion for you upon each visit. Best to head over on a Thursday or Friday night (when it's a little quieter) and snatch up one of the booths - mainly because you'll want to work your way through the entire cocktail list and this is a feat best attempted sitting down. Easily one of the best bars in Surry Hills and Sydney, but first you've got to find it." - For the People

Karaoke night at Wild Rover was an absolute blast! I went with a group of friends and we had an unforgettable time. The energy in the room was electric — everyone was singing their hearts out, cheering each other on, and just vibing together like one big party. The crowd was super fun, the staff kept the drinks flowing, and the DJ kept the night moving with an awesome lineup of songs. As a guy, I’ve gotta say… I definitely caught a few other guys checking out my butt, which honestly just added to the wild and carefree fun of the night. No complaints — the whole atmosphere was playful, inclusive, and full of good vibes. If you’re looking for a place to let loose, sing badly (or brilliantly), and make some memories, Wild Rover is the spot. We laughed, we sang, we danced, and we’re already planning to come back again. 10/10 night.

Google
Wild rover is great. Karaoke at night often 7 nights a week. Open till 2am. Good food and drink. Friendly staff.

Google
Great bar with great devils and good food too. Smaller place but it packs a crowd. Our bartender Samantha was perfect! She is informative, entertaining, made great drinks and beautiful. It was a fun place on our bar crawl!

Deanna Derosier

Google
Kinda high priced. Think they took advantage of out of towners as this place was recommended by the locals for being on the cheaper side. Was here for hour and half and tab was $200! Didn't even leave drunk. The crowd was awesome, same with DJ!

Google
Do not go to this place. One of the bartenders was incredibly rude the entire night, overserved my friend, then complained about us not leaving "a big enough tip." This is what happens when you hire lazy college guys who drink behind the bar and don't care about the safety of who they're serving. Get better service.

Google
The bartender was so cool, she gave us free shots for my husbands birthday. Very friendly staff and patrons. Fun place to stop for karaoke!

Google
We just hosted a party for over 130 guests at Wild Rover, overall fantastic experience. Staff was incredibly accommodating and attentive. The venue itself was perfect, large private spaces, light system, great audio. They were able to cater to our large group without any issues, and the flow of service throughout the evening was impeccable. Parties above 50 also get a free buffet, chicken was delicious! Special shoutout to Jeff for his professionalism and for going above and beyond to make sure everything went smoothly. From the set up to the end of the night, their team was a pleasure to work with. I can't recommend Wild Rover enough for anyone looking to host a memorable event. Thank you for making our party so special!! We'll definitely be back!

Google
Horrible place with incredibly rude staff. Came from out of state for my birthday. They advertise dancing and DJ’s 7 nights a week here and at their sister bar (Sissy K’s) which is not accurate. That would’ve been fine but as soon as we sat down we were rudely spoken to by the bartender for stealing someone’s seat. We had no idea anyone was sitting there beforehand and moved as soon as we knew, it did NOT have to be a rude interaction. After 3 hours of travel for this night, we were cut off after 2 margaritas and a shot. Will never go back here.

Yelp
This was a fun bar to go to on St. Patrick's Day weekend. There are three different floors so you can choose the vibe or music scene you're looking for. They have various weekday specials to draw people in and it gets pretty packed on the weekends. I would go again.

Yelp
Yes affordable a bit of music somewhere you can get a pint for under $5 . Bartenders were ok could be a bit more outgoing .

Yelp
An amazing experience! Great drinks, great vibes all around. Come for karaoke - it's an amazing time!!

Yelp
If you're bar hopping around downtown Boston, stop by Wild Rover! We had a group of 12 and stopped in here on a whim. We're so glad we did because the staff treated us like we were family. The evening started out with some nice live acoustic music by Randy and then turned into a lively karaoke night. We had such a blast and ended up spending around 6 hours here! Special shout-out to Randy the guitarist and Ellie the server for being extra kind and always smiling. They were the absolute best.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night, enticed by free entry + $5 margaritas. The margs were underwhelming and watered down. However, our waitress was super polite and attentive to our table. After finishing the margs, we headed up to the 2nd floor to dance. The DJ music selection wasn't great--a lot of slow songs with lots of bass. Nobody was really dancing :( Overall, service is great but drinks + dancing are lacking.

Yelp
Stopped in around 4pm on a Sunday, as we were craving pickle chips and I stalked their menu and saw they have them. Only ones in the whole place which was weird, but fine. Glad it wasn't over busy/loud. Ordered the appetizer and they brought it in from next door, Sissy something or other. Apparently they share a kitchen. Still very hot so I'm not complaining. That said, they weren't that great. Batter was too thick on most and there were several "pickles" I bit into I had to spit out -- straight fried batter, no pickle in sight. Ranch was clearly from a bottle, nothing good, but did the trick. Service was very kind. Location is steps away from Faneuil Hall so incredibly convenient when wandering downtown. In a pinch, check it out! The rest of the menu looked good, was just a miss on what we ordered that day.

Yelp
This is the best place to host a party in Boston!! Always very fun and the staff is great!

Yelp
Went on a Saturday night, I was looking for a place to drink and dance. The upstairs floor ended up being pretty good, would recommend coming around 10-11 pm. The first floor was packed but it was funny seeing other people do Karaoke. The music was super loud on each floor so this is definitely a place for groups of friends- not a lot of mingling going on when you can't hear . My only issue is that all the speciality drinks were on the first floor only, and the downstairs was closed for a birthday party. The drink prices were reasonable, I didn't see much that was over 10 dollars. They accepted Apple Pay and the DJ was playing good music. I think I will come back to try the karaoke on the first floor.

Yelp
So much fun! The vibe was so cool and laid back. I had a blast watching drunk people sing karaoke lol. The alcohol slushies were suberp and surprisingly cheap! I definitely recommend visiting for a fun night out.

Yelp
First time here! One of the few places that were open after hours, sadly they had NONE of the beers we wanted BUT made up for it with the fun crowd, we arent from around here we are from Miami so we are used to late nights and lots of twerking, this is more of a chill karaoke spot on sundays but the crowd passed the vibe test! Had fries which is a HUGE order, but tasty! I gave it three stars because they didnt have any of the choices of beer, the music was good but no one really danced, very frat boy vibe Wouldnt mind coming back on our next boston trip!

Yelp
So much fun . Jewel was an amazing waitress . I was so impressed by her . She is so kind and attentive. She made our visit awesome . She was the only waitress on and truly worked harder than any waitress I've seen ! Thank you Jewel ! Please know you are Amazing!! We definitely will be back !! Thank you - karaoke was so much ! The DJ upstairs had everyone on the dance flowers

Yelp
Interesting crowd here but had an overall fun experience. Drink prices were outrageous and many people here seemed underage. Downstairs was karaoke and upstairs was a dance floor. We decided to go upstairs and had fun dancing. Wouldn't be upset if I never came back.

Yelp
I came here for a karaoke night with friends since we saw the line was shorter than the hong kong. We got drinks, which tasted good and the service was nice. We left and then came back. Staff let only half of our group back in, and told the rest of us we needed to pay the cover fee. We asked why the other half of the group didn't have to pay and they said "it's just policy." The only thing different between us was that we were all asian. Thankfully, after a bit if back and forth they let us in since we were all in one group. My friends sang some karaoke songs and we had a good time. I got up to sing and a group of men tried to pry the microphone from me. I took it back. One of the men kept trying to grab the mike and touch me. Then the men started yelling profanity at me and told me that I sucked. "F*** you" "you suck" "you're f**** terrible" they yelled." The staff member running the karaoke machine didn't do anything, did any of the staff. When i sat down, some nice ladies comforted me. I know a restaurant should not be held accountable for it's customers, but I can't help but feel like someone should have said something. I'm a small woman and I was extremely u comfortable and no one said a thing when all these things were yelled at me. I'm not sure i would feel safe being in this bar knowing that i can be verbally harassed and the bar would do nothing.

Yelp
People are cool but the music is so loud. I've been to concerts before but this is so loud that I can't even feel the rhythm in the music. I need to put in my AirPods to soften it but it can only do so much.

Yelp
Amazing bar in Boston! Devin the bartender was amazing she deserves a raise! My first bar in Boston and she was amazinggg. Made me feel so welcome. Music upstairs was great!!!!! Hong Kong next door sucks dont go there

Yelp
This place is advertised as a night club, if it wasn't for the beers being poured you could have convinced me it was a retirement home. Upstairs there was a bit of a younger crowd but no body you'd wanna dance with. Laughable they charge a cover to get in here.
google avatar

Drew V.

Yelp
Great staff, when the pub crawl group I was with arrived not all the bartenders knew what the deals were for us, but they rolled with it and figured things out. Misty (the upstairs bartender) in particular was on top of things.

Yelp
Ok bar, but terrible bouncers... I waited in line and paid the cover fee to eventually get into the bar. My girlfriend decided to go home at some point so I walked her outside to her uber (and made sure to get a stamp before I left). I went back to the front of the line after she left and the bouncer said I had to wait in line again. I explained that I had already waited and paid cover and showed him my stamp, and he said it didn't matter and that he couldn't let me in without waiting in line because his boss was watching the live feed of the camera at the door. While he was explaining this to me, he was SOMEHOW able to let in a group of girls who had cut the whole line and had not been in the club prior (the bouncer admitted they hadn't been in the bar already that night). I genuinely don't understand why he forced me to wait in line again after I had already been inside the club, and he KNEW I was just inside and even acknowledged that he saw me walk outside 2 seconds prior. What even is the point of the stamp if I have to wait in line all over again, and what sort of stupid policy is this?? All in all it was a terrible move and ultimately put a damper on the rest of my night which made it hard to enjoy myself once I got back inside (after waiting in another 20 minute line ALL OVER AGAIN). The bouncers name was Justin, and while he wasn't overtly rude he did seem to be making up rules on a whim (because last time I was here, a week prior, this was not an issue whatsoever, and he seemed to be picking and choosing who he let cut the line or not). Terrible customer service overall, and I will be sure to let all 11k of my followers on Instagram know about this so as to avoid this conundrum altogether.

Yelp
The absolute best service in a local Boston bars. Kaleigh the bartender gives amazing service and makes the neat cocktails and recommends great drinks off and on and on menu. Phenomenal overall !

Yelp
We had a large group and were looking for somewhere for dinner and found the wild rover. I ordered the fried haddock and it was served with onion rings, fries, and coleslaw. My food was good and a nice serving size. Our waitress was very attentive. It did start to get rowdy later in the evening.

Tess B.

Yelp
the woman in charge of karaoke on the night of 5/03/2024 was one of the rudest people i have ever encountered. she made me wait for 3 hours to do karaoke because she kept asking for bribes. i checked with a manager and that was not allowed. overall one of the most unpleasant people and i will not be going back.

Yelp
The Rover is one of those places where I've had some times I will always remember. The set up here is ideal if you want a dance bar. 2 dance floors and a karaoke spot sandwiched in the middle. VIP tickets are the cheapest you can find in the area. 17 bucks you cut the line and get two drinks. Ideal. The music 3/4 times will be just right for the mood and it's great if you want to dance the night away. The couple of things preventing me from giving this place 5 stars is the crowd here. Sometimes it is way too congested and you have people blocking you from all sides, making it claustrophobic. The ratio of guys to girls here sometimes gets skewed where you have 3:1 guys to girls. Fights also tend to break out in this corner of fanueil because you have 4 bars all very close to each other. It's a cool place, fun atmosphere but if you expect to go in and get a luxury experience or bottle service than it won't be fun for you.

Yelp
My friend and I stopped here on a Saturday afternoon for some food and drinks. It was pretty crowded but we were able to get a table. The table and the one next to it were super wobbly so it was hard to enjoy our drinks without spilling them. The waitress was very friendly and attentive. It seemed like our margaritas had way too much agave or something, because it tasted off. We ordered some apps (fried pickles and tots), and they were mediocre. Average bar food, tots were probably frozen. Fried pickles were good but weren't crispy enough. It's cheap, but not the cheapest of bars. However, it's a convenient place to come since it's right by Faneuil hall and all the shops.

Yelp
Karaoke downstairs is dope, drinks are good, bartenders are sweet... but the music scene upstairs is HORRIBLE. They were playing the most embarrassing Top40 songs from the late 2000s / early 2010s ("Barbie Girl" was one, if that tells you anything). Lots of early Nicki Minaj & EDM-like remixes of bad pop songs (think Justin Bieber, Sean Mendez, etc.). The "newest" song they played was probably Gucci Gang, and it was the censored version....... yikes! Good for a quick drink or a few rounds of karaoke, but definitely stay away if you're trying to shake your a$$ to some good music.

Yelp
this is definitely a dive bar. there is some street parking around the area and all, but we took cabs. they have some pre made frozen drinks and they were ok, not very strong but also not too weak. they have darts and karaoke there, I am not sure what is the karaoke schedule but we laugh it when we came by and that was kind of cool. the staff is ok, not the friendliest but they do serve fast cause the place is so empty. for a quiet night with a group of friends the is a ok place to go. I did not dare to eat here but I did have one of the frozen drinks. TOOTY FRUITY- it was ok. not something I would get drunk on for sure. not impressive at all but ok for a quiet night.

Yelp
Our server Jewel did a great job, I was very impressed with how timely she was considering she was the only waitress at the establishment.

Yelp
Went with some friends to watch the Bruins play. We had a good time overall. Drinks are usually good and all around service was great. My food order was placed correctly, but the kitchen messed it up. They threw a random ingredient on it and I couldn't eat it. The server apologized and took it back. A second server confirmed the order was placed correctly and apologized. The manager ended up taking care of it. It was delicious btw. My friends placed a food order with a third server who was apparently getting ready to leave and she never put said order in. That was frustrating and my friends had to wait an hour for food. Again, one of the original servers took care of it. I appreciated each person taking responsibility for a mistake that wasn't theirs, addressing the issues, and quickly resolving them. Will def be back and kudos to the three ladies that assisted last night! You were all running your tails off.

Yelp
My English husband has been trying Guinness across America since he's been in the States. This place has officially taken the #1 position for Best Guinness in America! The girls on the bar Saturday morning were great. Very friendly and hilarious; fun to be around!

Yelp
Very fun weekend spot! Popular place to hang out and chill; the upstairs opens on the weekends and is a semi-night club although there's no dancing during covid so everyone is sitting down. On weekend nights it's reservation only since it gets quite busy. Staff are very nice and vibe with the place too, and let me order shots for the entire bar!

Autumn W.

Yelp
Do NOT go to this bar if you want to have a fun girls night out. I was here with 2 friends - 3 girls total all under 120lbs and sober. Random guys were grabbing us all night as we were just trying to dance to sub par music. We were standing by the bar calling an Uber after having several uncomfortable experiences when a man tried to push his way through our trio, one of us put their arm out automatically and said "Don't separate us." Turns out the 5' tall man we blocked from shoving through us was a bouncer, who then when into a back room and had his larger bouncers kick us out. The only positive thing I have to say about this place is that the manager - who still asked us to leave - agreed that he needed to talk to his employee after listening to us and understanding that three tiny females sipping on cups of water were not a threat to his bouncer. There is a $10 cover charge to get into what feels like a room full of high school boys who have never been to a club much less seen a female in person before. The male to female ratio is 4:1. If you are a women who wants to feel respected, go literally anywhere else.

Yelp
This is my favorite bar in Boston right now. All of the staff is so friendly and always attentive to all their tables. Not to mention the food is bomb and they always have great drink deals. This weekend they had $2 seltzer's. The mixed drinks are also so good. We were loving the porn star this weekend it's so refreshing.

Yelp
Really fun bar nightclub mix! I am not from Boston and it was my first time visiting and I had a lot of fun! Staff are super friendly and make you feel welcomed! I will definitely recommend and when I come back to Boston will visit this establishment again!
google avatar

Derek L.

Yelp
Came here for an event and we went upstairs to the second floor. The dance floor is relatively large and can accommodate about 50-70 people. The music mix was mainly top 40 and I really enjoyed it. Food: Chicken quesadillas, the chicken tenders- regular and buffalo, and pizza. All of it was standard bar food, tasty but nothing special. Drinks: They had a good selection of beers on tap and the drinks were reasonable priced. Overall, I think it's a great choice for a night out with friend or hosting an event. I have been here several times and always enjoyed my experience here at Wild Rover.

Yelp
I had McKayla as a server and she was awesome! She recommended a good handful of drinks and appetizers! She made our whole experiment wonderful even considering the whole COVID 19 situation. She reminded us to wear our masks and distance from others! Cheers to McKayla and Wild Rover!

Yelp
First, the vibe is really good in this place. However, the food was absolutely terrible. We waited 1.5 hours for our meal which is fine because it was busy however when we got our food everything was luke warm. My lobster roll bread was super stale, the totchos my friend had looked like the plate sat there for a long while and the shredded cheese was dry and stuck to the plate. The Buffalo chicken was super dry as well. It really was a disappointment. Our waiter(s) though were so friendly and kind which probably helped our experience be good rather than terrible. I don't think I'd come back though.
google avatar

Christina L.

Yelp
This place is trashy af. I would not recommend it to anyone! What others said on here is true. The floors are extremely sticky. My feet kept getting stuck all night. There's barely any room to dance and it's so sweaty and hot in there you feel like you can't even breathe. Not to mention, the mixed drinks come in tiny cups and there is barely any liquor in them. Also, the staff is incredibly rude! I had a terrible experience here Saturday night. My boyfriend fell down the stairs because the floors were wet from all the spilt drinks. He split his elbow and his brand new phone was smashed to smithereens and no longer works. He only had two beers since he was the DD that night. When I spotted a worker with a mop in his hand I told him the stairs were slippery and someone got hurt. He said, "I don't give a fuck!" Like really dude? That's your job!! He should be fired, but apparently disrespectful staff is condoned here. I went to look for a manager and was directed to three different people before I was finally able to speak to the main guy. I told him what happened and he said they would review the cameras, but it was basically a he said she said situation. I was like, "Excuse me? I wouldn't make this up." Terrible customer service etiquette.I asked the manager if they were going to pay for his phone and he said it wasn't on them and asked my boyfriend if he has insurance which he does, but he still had to pay a $200 deductible to get a new phone. This would have never happened if the staff was actually doing their job. When I pointed out the guy who made the comment to me the manager accused me of lying! This is a shady place and should really be shut down. No regard or respect for their customers at all.

Yelp
This is another one of those reviews that I have to start off with some background... I tried "clubbing" before... I didn't like it. So, when a decently large group (eight) of my friends were going out to celebrate one of them turning 21. I was hesitant at first, but said: "what the heck" and went out with them. We went to this club, arriving somewhere around 10-ish. There was virtually no wait to get in, and $10 cover charge is very reasonable. There was a good number of people doing karaoke on the ground floor. The second floor had a decent number of people, but was not yet crowded. Around this time, the place was of a good temperature, and was pretty clean (as not a lot of drinks had been spilled yet). There is a nice area up there to lounge a bit, and it could easily fit the 9 of us that were there. However, I would like slightly more room to lounge about. Drinks were priced cheaper than I expected, if you are planning to get a few drinks, it definitely won't break the bank, and may even be cheaper than some other downtown places. Bar service was good, they got the drinks to people very fast, even when it was quite crowded. (Tip: bring cash, that way it's quicker and easier to pay for drinks, and you don't have to sign and write in tips on a somewhat wet surface in the dark) Music was good! Some slightly older top-40 songs and some hip-hop that are all easy to dance to. It is quite loud, and you can feel the bass in your bones. I will give them massive points for two things: First, if I am in an area that has extremely loud music, after a point, I get sort of a sensory overload in the ears, and everything turns to unbearable noise. This did not happen here. Second, music was consistent throughout the venue, meaning next to the DJ and towards the bar, the volume is about the same. The other side of this is, that if you are in a lounge area, or ordering a drink, you have to yell. Don't expect to still have your voice at the night's end. ~ Basement floor is another dance floor (opens at 12 AM when I was there). DJ is different, and thus music is a little different. There are also no spaces here to lounge, only to dance. While it is a nice change from the top level floor, I would have liked a little more to differentiate it. Karaoke is good fun! Even if you can't sing, after seeing others who can't, and people who don't judge, you will probably get up there yourself! Lots of TVs down there to watch sports too (interesting in a club). As the night progressed, many drinks were spilled, and the floor became wet in some places, and there were empty aluminum bottles of beer dancing along the floor as well. Staff did their best to clean up where they could, and in my dancing, no drinks were spilled on me. Also, it became hotter in there as a bunch of people started crowding in. However, they do have good ventilation so that this is not a big issue. Didn't pay a lot of attention to clientele, but seems like a normal crowd, with a lot of college students, good male to female ratio. Staff was nice though in their cleaning, attentiveness, and in providing security.

Yelp
First time here. I've never seen two more miserable inattentive bartenders in my 46 years in the bars. Great location...they just didn't give a shit.

Yelp
Nice place to have a nice time. The bar and the staff are amazing, and the weekends nights are remarkable.

Yelp
Went on a Wednesday night to show my friend the place. He was visiting from Australia for a short time so we decided to have a night out to show him Boston nightlife. We were both 100% sober. The bouncer refused to let us in. He claimed the bouncer over at Sissy K's has kicked us out and there was no way we were coming in there. After a bit of work, we got the bouncer from the other bar to walk all the way over there and confirm that NONE of that was true. The bouncer STILL did not let us in. I hope he's been fired by now. We went to Storyville instead and had a much better time.

P V.

Yelp
Don't go here !!! They hired this new guy that's in charge of the karaoke and he was super rude to my friends and I. Usually they're super nice, but he just killed the vibe for all of us. Also the service and the quality of everything (drinks, food, etc.) has definitely gone down. Also the fact that there was a cover charge made it not worth it at all.

Lily G.

Yelp
yo i really don't get what they're trying to do w this one. currently up in here and I'm not mad but i don't get it. who comes here? the vibe is so unsettling. i gotta go. staff seems cool though

Yelp
I'm so glad this bar is able to operate during the Covid 19 pandemic, they serve my favorite cocktails and the bartenders are always so sweet and very kind. Extremely hard working girls in there! They always take care of my friends and I whenever we come in. My favorite bar in Boston for sure, great music, food and drinks, as well as the people working there. 100% worth it to check out if you're from out of town and visiting Boston. Always a pleasure to visit The Wild Rover!

Adam L.

Yelp
Red Rover, Red Rover... don't ever come over. Place is complete garbage. Doesn't honor reservations made almost a week prior. Worst customer service I've ever experienced in any restaurant or bar in my lifetime. Manager can kick rocks.
google avatar

Becca C.

Yelp
Great bar! Tom W was so kind to our group. Such an awesome guy. I've never had a bad time at this bar.

K S.

Yelp
Dj on upper floor was alright. Overall pretty mid. Wish I could get my $10 back. Luckily a lot of fun bars nearby without a cover where you will have a much better time.

Tiff R.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years, I love the place a lot and the karaoke is amazing. One of the guys who works here at the door is a jerk though. My friend has a new NYS ID which they recently changed the look of and the guy wouldn't let her in, was saying some condescending things and kind of power tripping. Not sure what his name is I think he may have been the manager but he was on the shorter side and extremely rude. Kept saying she was lucky he didn't take it... it's a real ID. Are you kidding me? Was eventually all sorted out but totally ruined the night with the way he went about it.

Yelp
The Wild Rover is okay. Got a meh G&T for $7.50 and it was difficult to reach a bartender since it seems like they were understaffed for a Friday night. The place is split into two floors, the lower one being more like a regular sports bar, and the top floor had a pretty wide dance area. Seems like many people who come here get a drink or two and leave fairly quickly.
