White Rhinos Are Thriving in Rwanda Following a Historic Translocation - AFAR

"Magashi sits on close to 15,000 exclusive-use acres in the northern reaches of Akagera. The camp’s six stilted canvas tents, with traditional black-and-white imigongo flourishes and rose-hued mosquito nets, are positioned along the shores of Lake Rwanyakazinga, where it’s common to see elephant herds drinking water. When not tracking rhinos with their guide, guests can explore the lake on one of the camp’s private boats. Pair Magashi with a stay at Ruzizi Tented Lodge, a nine-tent ecocamp managed by African Parks in the southern part of Akagera, less than three miles from the park entrance." - Jennifer Flowers

Amazing. We were taken out onto the reserve each morning and evening and were able to view several animals living in their natural habitat. In addition, a variety of birds, hippos, water buffalo and elephants would be right outside the rooms. At the resort, the staff were fabulous. I am vegan, and the chef and staff were diligent in meeting my (and everyone's) dietary requests. I cannot say enough about the staff, food and space to relax and enjoy this wonderful reserve.

We had an amazing stay at Magashi. Every single person on staff was warm, friendly, energetic, and helpful - they truly make the stay what it is. The rooms were beautiful - very much high end glamping - and all the amenities were perfectly on point. Having access to a private concession with no other cars made the safari experience feel small, without crowds or seeing many other tourists at all. We saw all Big 5 across 5 safari drives (a leopard on the last day in the far off distance). We would recommend Magashi to anyone visiting Akagera!

We recently returned from 4 nights at this stunning property in Akagera. |Everyone in the team makes it feel like home from the moment you arrive, silver service with a big Rwandan smile. The view over the lake from the deck and the rooms is sensational. The tent is big with a nice bathroom, double bed with lake view, seating area in the tent and on the deck.||Just to note as this is a tented camp, at night you can hear the hippos, frogs and many bugs making noises, and we even heard lions roaring on the far side of the lake one night. We love it, but apparently it's not for everyone! The hippo are visible in the lake right by the camp all day and night. We have stayed in other tented camps in Africa before but this is by far the most luxurious. ||The game viewing is particularly good in the plains area, big herds of buffalo, nice numbers of giraffe, and we were also lucky enough to see lions, black and white rhino, a big elephant herd and a leopard during the trip. Also the Roan Antelope which is quite rare apparently. The birdlife is absolutely sensational too, and our guide Leo was particularly knowledgeable on these - birds aren't something that we travel for but with the variety of sizes, sounds and colours on display you can't help but be interested. ||One night there was a local display of a typical cattle ceremony with local food on offer which was really interesting to see. The camp even arranged a candlelight dinner by the pool under the stars as it was our anniversary, a wonderful end to an incredible few days. A waterbuck walked right past during the dinner!||The food was the best we have eaten anywhere on safari, probably the best we've eaten anywhere in the world. Excellent variety, the chef offered to cook off menu / substitute items if we wished, and the portions were good, not too big. Breakfast was terrific every day, the fruit is so fresh and sweet.||Huge thank you to everyone in the wilderness family, especially Rachel, Adelphine, Louise and Gloria who were so great during the whole stay. We cannot wait to return to Rwanda!

Great location, excellent accommodation but the staff were the stars!|We stayed 3 nights and had the most wonderful time. The area is full of wildlife and as this is a private concession within the park you have the whole place to yourselves! Our guide Innocent was amazing, his knowledge and love of the area added to our enjoyment. Selma and her team were enthusiastic and welcoming. All the staff made you feel at home, nothing was too much trouble. Would highly recommend. Well done team Magashi!

Thank you to all the good folks at Wilderness Magashi for a superb visit. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel at home in this beautiful and impeccably maintained tented lodge. Perched on the shore of Lake Rwanyakazinga with Tanzania visible in the distance, the ambience is relaxed and congenial, the cuisine impeccable and the staff delightful. The big five were seen in day. A special mention to our eagle eyed and enthusiastic guide Innocent, Charles (thank you for conjuring the Benylin cough syrup) and Emmy for taking such good care of us in the dining room.

Having been born in, and travelled Africa extensively my entire life and now as a wildlife photographer, I find myself at Magashi camp in Akagera National Park for my 60th birthday. I basically have no words to adequately describe the place. It is THE most spectacular place in all of Africa in my opinion. Nothing was too much trouble for the amazing crew led by the vivacious Duracell bunny, Selma and Herman was the most comprehensively knowledgeable guide I have ever had the good fortune to spend time with. Oh, and the food !! Sublime !! Ridiculously fantastic, fresh and delicious. If you are looking for the big 5 safari of a lifetime, look no further. For me, I’m going back as soon as I can.

We spent 3 great nights here after gorilla trekking. ||It does not get any better than this. We have done upper end safari’s before, but this is the best camp we have stayed at. The location on the lake is amazing. Waking up to the hippos right in front of your tent watching you from the lake. ||My wife is a celiac and the food was fabulous. Choices at every meal. “Tell us what you want and we will make it gluten free”. The kitchen staff took great care of her and there were no issues. ||Akagera Park is beautiful. Our guide Herman could not have been better. Saw the big 5 in one day. Both black and white rhinos. He also showed us lots of little things which were amazing. His knowledge was great and he was always fun to be with. ||The ability to do normal game drives, and also boat tours to better see the hippos and crocodiles can’t be topped. ||Selma, Gloria and all of the staff were amazing. ||Can’t wait to go back.

This place is so special! We had three nights here before we went gorilla trekking. Saw almost everything except the leopards were hiding from us. The black rhino was especially fun to see from the boat safari! Our driver was Alfonse and he was excellent, we enjoyed every minute with him. The food, the rooms, the staff... all just so perfect and lovely. Being right on the lake is very unique and special. Every room is in the water and you feel like the birds and hippos are putting on a show just for you. I can't wait to go back!
