Our dinner at Wild Ginger was the singular most disappointing dining experience we have had for a long time, especially given the glowing reviews here. The best way to describe the food is that we found it to be overpriced, bland, watered down Thai food - which has lost much (most?) of the flavour, zing and spice that we have come to expect from our favourite cuisine. And the worst part? A $140 dinner bill for 2.
Disappointment started with the crab wontons, which were soggy. The wonton skins had the consistency of damp cardboard and had obviously been sitting around for a while instead of being freshly fried. We ordered a second side - the smoked trout on betel leaves, which to us tasted like supermarket bought smoked trout mixed with a bit of mayo and fried onion sprinkled on top.
The crispy chicken salad was next, which looked and tasted like a plain old chicken schnitty chopped up with some limp asian greens and drenched with supermarket asian dressing. The braised green curry beef cheeks were the saving grace — tender and mildly spiced. But by then, it felt like too little too late.
We came in eagerly looking forward to this dinner, but we left sad, disappointed and $140 poorer.
