Go Beyond the Safari With These Wildlife-focused Volunteer Trips in East and Southern Africa

"Runs robust voluntourism programs focusing on the African painted dog and other keystone species. Activities include radio tracking, behavioral monitoring, and identifying prints. Volunteers stay at a communal house and may assist with darting, collaring, and relocation." - Rachel Rebibo

I love it so much, I go every year! I have been going to WildlifeAct projects for over ten years. I believe we actually helps conservation - unlike some other volunteer projects I’ve tried. It is the best way to see wildlife and learn about conservation on the ground. I self-drive Kruger regularly but it is hard to find the wild dogs ( my fav). With WildlifeAct, we have tracked them to ensure they are Ok and we almost always find them. It is a joy to see such rare, endangered animals in the wild, being free. For me, having a limit of 5 volunteers on the truck is very important and insures everyone gets an amazing view. The monitors have always been great and meeting like-minded people is fab. If you want to see wildlife, help conservation and learn a lot, GO, GO, GO! I would spend d half a year there if I could afford it!

I've been several times and each visit was a fantastic experience. So much better than a holiday safari and you can feel you have made a contribution to the work going on year on year. Best wild dog sitings ever!!

I volunteered with Wildlife Act several years ago and it was the most awesome experience I have ever had!! I had been on several African safaris before this, but the volunteer experience with Wildlife Act was the best. I got to go places and do things on the reserves that you can't get with a safari. I spent 4 weeks in the African bush chasing wild dogs, looking for lions and cheetahs and watching the sun rise and set over the magnificent landscape. I recommend this experience for a true African adventure! Plus you are giving back by using your time to help safeguard these wonderful animals. Give it a try!! You will never regret it.

I had 4 weeks with Wildlife ACT in 2023; 2 at iMfolozi and 2 at Manyoni. Before this, I’d been on safari in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Kenya, Uganda and even a brief stint with some elephants one night while I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Gabon. I did safari guide school at Kruger during Covid. In short, I was not a newcomer to the bush or safari experience. The time at WildlifeACT scratched an entirely different itch. Working with the staff and other volunteers, I was able to dive more deeply into an understanding of the interplay within and between species. Because of the tools used (telemetry, camera traps, time with veterinarian staff), we saw and experienced close encounters with more animals than on any of my earlier experiences. I have so much respect for the work being done by WildlifeACT. Their commitment to maintaining healthy ecosystems is unparalleled. Thank you WildlifeACT for your work in the world. I treasure so many memories. Sitting solo on the back of the truck as a herd of elephants approached from behind; touching a wild dog during a veterinarian session, seeing a proud lioness carry her new born cub through a forest to a new safer location and so much more. If you have even an inkling that this experience might be for you, go for it! It’s outstanding and so very rewarding.

Spend 4 months with Wildlife ACT in South Africa and a month at the Seychelles. It's an incredible way to learn and explore what conservation is all about. From using telemetry, tracking the animals, being part in the darting of the African wild dogs, putting a collar on a cheetah and much much more in South Africa. To tagging hawksbill turtles, relocating turtle nests, photographing different marine life or planting native trees in the Seychelles. So if you're passionate about helping out protecting some of the critical endangered species in this world and being on your holiday at the same time. This is the way to go!!!

I have been volunteering with Wildlife Act since 2014. The first time was a life-changing experience, and all the projects I have participated with WACT since were all amazing. Being in the bush is a unique rewarding moment, and having a chance to have a positive impact on its conservation is more than fulfilling. I recommend Wildlife Act Programs to anyone who is passionate about the outdoors, with a good level of English, and in good health conditions to enjoy the utmost of it!

One of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have!! WLAct is the “real deal”! A volunteer/travel experience that actually contributes to the betterment of the participating parks and their precious animals while providing volunteers with a unique, potentially life-changing experience. It’s a wonderful opportunity for all ages…I was in my late 60’s and loved all my 4 placements… lots of much younger people take part too. Just do it!!!

A Life Changing Experience!!! Real, on-the-ground conservation work—this is what WACT delivers every single day. Without their dedicated team monitoring priority species and stepping in when needed, Zululand’s wildlife would be in a very different place. One moment that stands out was one early morning when we discovered a snare strangling an endangered African wild dog, a mother of five pups. Thanks to the team’s quick action and a call to the vet, her life—and her pups’—were saved. I initially signed up to volunteer for just two weeks. That turned into three months… and I returned the following year. I completely fell in love with the world of conservation in KZN. The passion of the WACT team is infectious, and the behind-the-scenes experiences were absolutely unforgettable—far more meaningful than simply going on a game safari. I recommend it to everyone I know, and several friends have gone since—and loved it just as much.
