William IV - Review - Old Street - London - The Infatuation

"There are plenty of centuries-old boozers in London, but few have an upstairs dining room as gorgeous as William IV’s. A roaring fire sits one end of this jovial space, where families sink pints, birthday lunches descend into dinner, and candles are lit come night so everyone can see if they need another Guinness. While downstairs spills onto the street on an average Thursday night, this room is altogether more serene—even if the British food is better on paper than on your plate. The Sunday roast curse strikes on a plate of perfectly pink beef top rump that’s paired with limp roasties and a strangely Evian-like gravy. Still, it’s worth pitching up during the week to have a few drinks, smear some wondrous Marmite butter on soda bread, and order something with excellent, gigantic chips. Lean on scampi and snacks and it’s unlikely you’ll leave unhappy. In our minds, the William IV is best treated as a pub first, and a restaurant second. Food Rundown Guinness Soda Bread, Marmite Butter This is up there with the finest bread in London. It’s like eating a slice of buttered Marmite toast. Only nothing is toasted nor, technically, melted. Really, really good. photo credit: Jake Missing Sunday Roast The meat on these roasts are cooked well. The beef is pink and the chicken breast is just about moist, but everything else could do with some love. The roast potatoes are neither crisp nor hot, the leeks need more sweating, and the gravy has had an identity crisis. It’s deeply brown but not up to much else. photo credit: Jake Missing Guinness Glazed Beef Short Rib, Mashed Potato, Baby Carrots Some dishes jump off a menu and this is one of them. Unfortunately while the beef itself is nicely cooked—tender and pink strands that pull away with a bit of help from your fork—the Guinness glaze that comes with it is all wrong. Over-reduced and acrid. What should be a rich and decadent dish turns out to be a bit of a dud. Sticky Toffee Pudding, Vanilla Ice Cream You can’t agree with the portioning of this STP and, even though it looks like it might need some more moisture, there’s a perfect amount of toffee sauce. The sponge is excellent and if you’re pro ice cream with your pudding, you’re going to like this. photo credit: Jake Missing" - Jake Missing

We always have the most fantastic time at William IV but yesterday was particularly special. The team made me feel so special on my birthday. It was a large table and they made sure individual payment from everyone was handled seamlessly. The team are so warm and really care about their customers, their food and drink offering, and the pub and that is SO clear. We are so lucky to have this pub as part of our community - it being taken over and revamped like this has changed our local lives because now we have somewhere great to come and celebrate, perk ourselves up, bring family, or simply stop for a post work drink. But equally I know people who live elsewhere who have travelled to eat at the pub and the dining room upstairs and everyone just loves it. Thank you so much guys

A Wonderful Experience! I had such a great time during my visit! I was warmly welcomed by the manager, Dan, and the lovely Ellen — both were incredibly kind and attentive. The food was absolutely delicious, and the atmosphere was just perfect — cozy, stylish, and full of good energy. I wasn’t expecting to be so impressed, but it truly was a delightful surprise. Highly recommend! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Beautiful pub with large windows and wonderful atmosphere. Great Sunday roast (tried de chicken) and excellent fresh fish of the day (bream). The staff is super nice and welcoming - very helpful with kids (high chair). Very good beer selection (incl. Delirium on tap).

Great traditional London pub with a lovely warm atmosphere - mixing a traditional pub environment with modern food and service standards. Couldn't fault the staff, and a great bar menu. Good vibes and happy faces from my experience. Loved the fresh whole-tail scampi.

🚇 Old Street 🍺 £6.65 Guinness The Williams IV is situated at the end of a Georgian terrace, close to Wenlock Basin in the backstreets of Hoxton. The nearest Tube is Old Street, it’s a ten minute walk to get here. This pub was built in 1838 by the Wenlock Brewery, it later came under the stewardship of Charringtons. This pub has had a number of challenges over the years with several periods of closure. The pub reopened in August 2023 and I’m glad to say it is now on a firm footing. This is a traditional boozer that is set out over two floors. The main bar on the ground floor is bright and airy, has a bare boarded floor and rustic tables and chairs. The servery is unique due to its size and is three sided nature, it also has a low level island back bar. Around the walls are a collection of eclectic artworks and an old Guinness mirror. Upstairs are a further two rooms which are good for dining or a quiet pint away from the main bar. The beer selection was excellent and included a choice of bonafide continental lagers, a range of craft beers and a couple of cask ales for good measure. I decided on a pint of Guinness, my pint was great, price point was a little high. The food menu included elevated pub classics, a tasty assortment of snacks and fresh oysters. A Cheeseburger, Guinness onions and chips cost £15. I arrived just after 3pm on an overcast Saturday afternoon in March. The pub was fairly busy with a mix of locals and visitors to the area. There was a warm and laidback atmosphere which made settling in very easy. The service was top-notch, the team here are friendly and welcoming. The @william_iv_pub is a superb backstreet Hoxton local. This pub offers a great choice of beers and food, a traditional pub ambiance and has a friendly local pub feel. This was my second visit to this pub, I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed both visits. ℹ️ Info correct on visiting 16.03.24

My friends and I had the most amazing Sunday roast, the beef was delicious and cooked to perfection, really generous portions of veg. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Stopped in here for a small bite and a drink. I was able to get a seat at the bar and enjoyed well made drinks and delicious bites. It is a busy English Pub for sure, but the servers were attentive and friendly. It is a large place with lots of room both inside and outside on the sidewalks.

Yelp
This isn't our local but we like it so much we make it our local. Strolling around the area last night, warm weather, nowhere to be. We come across our old pal William and decide to stop for a drink or two. A chilled glass of white wine (or two), an American Pale ale and a Peroni later, we meandered home quite pleased with our happy hour hanging out the doors of William IV. First, the bartenders are very nice. The blonde in the lovely floral dress particularly sweet, chatting to me about wines and giving me a taste or two of some things I might like. I appreciate a pub with a decent wine list. Doesn't need to be outrageous, just a few passable glasses for when the mood strikes. WIV pulls this off quite well with an entire board list of their current wines. Oh and £16 jugs of Pimms. Hard to pass up, next time Billy Boy. Sunday Roast til 3pm. Free wifi. £10 minimum on cards. Warm and inviting. No bullshit. See ya there.

Yelp
I stopped here for a late week day lunch. I had the avocado chicken salad, which was surprisingly delicious. Tender, juicy, and fresh grilled chicken with fresh greens and avocado in a light vinaigrette with Parmesan and flaked salt. They had three real ales on tap but had and additional two engines and eight craft beers on tap. They offered several several bottled craft beers as well. Seating was comfortable and the staff was friendly and accommodating.

Yelp
The William IV is just around the corner from me. It's a lovely little pub with a great interior. Sadly it's never been quite as popular as it deserves to be, and has changed managers a number of times in the past few years. In its current iteration, they've just launched a new menu with a new chef, and the food is pretty damn excellent, with a range of really good finger food, burgers and the likes. They usually have a few well-kept ales on tap, too. Well worth popping in if you're in the area.
