17 Places to Mentally Escape To While Waiting for Election Results

"A mere hour from Melbourne, in the Dandenong Ranges, one finds a landscape of huge pine trees and beautiful fern gullies. In one of such gullies, a man’s life-work and dreams live on. Born in 1898, William Ricketts began developing his skill in clay modeling in his teen years. In the 1930s he purchased a four-acre plot of land on Mount Dandenong, naming it ‘Potter’s Sanctuary’. Beginning in 1934, William Ricketts started work on his clay figures that would soon adorn all of his property. In the 1960s, after having gained some local notoriety for his sculptures, the Victorian Government bought the sanctuary and some surrounding land to become a park for public use. He continued to live on and work in his Sanctuary until 1993 when he passed away. Between 1949 and 1960, Rickett traveled often into the desert interior of Central Australia. It was here that he spent time with both Arrente and Pitjantjatjara indigenous people. These native peoples not only inspired his work as models but influenced his philosophy as well. Rickett is known for his belief that all humans should be stewards of the land, just as the indigenous people he spent time with were. The goal of his life-long project was to provide a relaxing setting where one could reflect on man’s oft forgotten connection to nature. Nestled in a glade covered in fern and mountain ash trees, William Ricketts’ masterpiece feels alive. Some covered in moss, the 92 ceramic sculptures in the park all blend seamlessly into their natural surroundings. “Each one of us is a transformer of Divine Power and when love finds form in sculpture and music we are richly blessed because through such we can reach God… Man is nature’s masterpiece, therefore claim your inheritance by giving her the co-operation you owe.” -William Ricketts" - ATLAS_OBSCURA

What a magical place!!Was more than I expected, the path ways are clear but wheelchair access in some places maybe a bit difficult, but do able. There is parking available near entrance for handicapable parking (dislike the word handicap 😁)What William Rickett creates with his hands is amazing in detail and the expressions he manages to capture in his pieces had me in awe, some very large pieces I couldn't imagine how he placed them ,but all questions were answered as there is his workshop still on sites. No food or drink to be taken in as they don't provide bins.Lots of lovely cafes around for coffee and cake,or lunch.

Excellent place to visit. Great art work by William and very well preserved. A beautiful walk while seeing and praising his art work. They have set up to play movie / documentary about his life, his aspirations and his work. His love for nature and his passion for art is very clear in his work. Its a great place to visit and feel refreshed. If you love art and nature then this is a place to go. There is a cafe across the road and also few other places around to look.

Really cool park to check out which features the work of William Ricketts, an Australian sculptor. The sanctuary is filled with trees and ferns so it's a very nice shaded walk. The walk itself is not long, will definitely take less than an hour. Free admission and free parking. No food or drinks allowed in the park.

There's something quite serene about this place. As you walk your way through, you can't help but be amazed at how talented he was at sculpting but also feel the passion he clearly had. Some pieces are quite the treasure with strong messages carved in. Worth a visit. Entry is free, donations supported. Wheelchair friendly. Public toilets available.

The drive alone up the this sanctuary is worth visiting alone. Beautiful scenery outside of Melbourne central. The sanctuary itself is beautiful. Very easy to walk around on the walking tracks with stunning artwork to stop and view along the way and some beautiful history to learn. Allow at least an hour here and then make sure you continue to drive around and explore the rest of the Dandenong ranges.

Yelp
I believe I can safely say that William Ricketts Sanctuary was one of the most peaceful places that I have ever visited. Just walking through the forest and seeing all those artworks that were made not by harming but by trying to be in synch with nature was an amazing experience. Of course, I was lucky enough to visit this place with my favourite person in the world and she was my guide in everything as well as taking me to this wonderful place. She and her mother love travelling and were nice enough to take me places that I would not be able to go and discover on my own. You should visit this place, full of many works of art, if you are interested in the aboriginal culture and history, it is another perspective into the culture. Also, the artworks are situated in such a way that takes you away and the peace and quiet just lets you fall into the depths of your inner self. You will be amazed.

Yelp
Take a wander through some beautiful forest paths all surrounded by and incorporated into amazing works of art. It is only a short drive from melbourne and well worth visiting. You will learn a lot about local aboriginal life and history. And learn about the life of William rickett.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my visit there. The cravings are amazing! The walk around is easy - perhaps if you are older some parts could be considered "moderate". While I don't know if it is worth a whole day out - if you are in the area it is definitely check it out! There is no admission fee - they just ask you make a donation.

Yelp
Absolutely glorious setting for the work of this amazing artist. William Ricketts had so much love and respect for the Aboriginal People of Australia. Please try to visit.
