Husband and I have long adored Underwood Bar & Bistro, which is Willowood's sister restaurant across the street. We've heard a lot of good things said about Willowood's ham and Brie sandwich so we decided to head out there.
Willowood's vibe is casual and fun, and had more seating than I would have thought. We were greeted warmly and were given a table right away. One thing I noticed rather quickly was how very hot it was inside. They sat us near a very sunny window where my poor husband cooked for the duration of our meal. A few fans or a little bit more A/C would have made for a nicer experience.
My husband ordered the ham and Brie sandwich (black forest ham, Brie, pears, mustard, balsamic vinaigrette) and I chose the turkey and Swiss (turkey, Swiss, marinated red onions, apples, mustard, lemon vinaigrette). My husband also ordered an ice tea ($5) and was dismayed when he watched our server pour it into a glass from a can. He took one taste and promptly sent it back, it had the strangest flavor. Certainly not your standard black iced tea. Along with our sandwiches, we were offered a side of either potato salad, coleslaw, or mixed greens. We both went with the potato salad.
Our plates were brought out in a timely manner and we were eager to dig in. The bread on the sandwiches ended up being the best part, it was fresh and toasted nicely. It resembled sourdough but was more like a rustic, crusty, white bread. The rest of the sandwich, for both of us, left us pretty underwhelmed. The amount of meat on each was pretty skimpy and we both agreed that our sandwiches were lacking something- an aioli or some kind of item to give it more oomf. It wasn't until we were both done eating that we realized; neither of our sandwiches had their respective vinaigrettes! What a bummer, I do wonder if we would have enjoyed them more had they been made the way they were supposed to. I'd be willing to go back and give them another try. The potato salad was good.
Overall it was an alright experience. Service and atmosphere was nice, temperature of the place was far too warm, and our sandwiches were incomplete. Each sandwich was $19.50 and while it did include a small bit of potato salad, it felt pricey considering what we were served. Perhaps next visit will prove to be a better one.
