Delaware’s Most Magical Holiday Train Is Back—With Caboose Seating and Vintage Cars

"Running from Greenbank Station in Wilmington, Delaware, this railroad brings back its Santa Claus Express starting Nov. 28 on weekends and during the week of the holiday, with the final run on Christmas Eve; the 45-minute roundtrip winds along the Red Clay Valley watershed behind either a first-generation diesel or an antique steam locomotive for an old-fashioned feel, and Santa rides with an elf. Guests can book standard seats or reserve the caboose or parlor car for private groups, and each child gets a treat plus time for photos with Santa during four daily departures (12:30 p.m., 1:45 p.m., 3:00 p.m., 4:15 p.m.). On select dates in November, December, and January, the Holiday Lights Express offers a similar 45-minute ride in 100-year-old heated coaches covered in thousands of lights, powered by one of the railroad’s historic first-generation diesel locomotives. Tickets run $29 for adults, $28 for seniors, and $25 for ages 2–12, with children under 2 free; private-group rates are $400 for the caboose (15–20 people) and $600 for the parlor car (20–40). Service recently returned after a multi-month closure for passenger car and caboose renovations (including seating and window upgrades) and major repairs to the track and diesel fleet, and accessibility includes a wheelchair lift to board at Greenbank Station and ramps throughout the station, though train doorways are 24 inches wide with limited onboard storage—contact the railroad directly or visit wwrr.com for accommodations." - Evie Carrick Evie Carrick Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. This attraction is DEFINITELY Delaware's hidden gem! When entering the building to pick up your tickets, you are welcomed with Historic Delaware. The station provides plenty of historic readings and pictures while waiting for the famous call "All Aboard!" to passengers on the train. Once you've found your assigned seating, the train ride will stop traffic to take you through various cities, and over streams and lakes, while blowing its "I'm Here" whistle, which will put a smile on the kids faces! If you're looking for something to do with the family, I recommend purchasing tickets as far in advance as you can because the secret is out and tickets are limited!

If you are thinking about getting on the Santa Claus Express ride, do it! It was quite charming to be on the train with my girls. They were all excited to see Santa and got treats from him too. The view out the window was pleasant and even though we were cold the whole time, the girls had fun just watching out the window and seeing all the Christmas lights decorations and festivities around.

We had a wonderful time on the Holiday Lights Express! It was a great way to celebrate the season with the family. The decorated houses along the track were beautiful, and the vintage train cars added a really nice nostalgic touch. A very cozy and enjoyable experience for all ages.

Great experience! Homes are decorated so nicely on the ride and you even vote on what house you like best.

I want to start off by saying that I'm not necessarily sure if this is the company's fault but I personally felt like this was a waste of money. 40 dollars for 2 adult tickets and 1 toddler. Hardly any lights at all during my visit. It was cool to get on the train and experience that but I do believe more effort could have been made to make the price worth it. Maybe only saw a handful of lights on this 45 min train ride. Really wanted to love the experience but I just can not justify the price.

Such good experience. Lovely people and definitely is an activity that you can do with the whole family. Kids love it. My and my family enjoyed this and we can’t wait to go back in a different season to see how they decorate the train. 10/10 !!!

We had the best time on the holiday lights express !! Unfortunately due to weather they cancelled our original date and rescheduled. Diana handled it so well sending quick emails and keeping me informed. She had us rescheduled within hours and everything was amazing. The staff here were so helpful and kind! Definitely worth it !! My sons favorite part was the train horn 😂

First off, the Santa is the best. Other than that it was very underwhelming. Where’s the magic? My family of 20 rented the caboose a few years back and remember an elf hanging with us, Christmas decor on the train and music. This time none of that. Asked about the music for the kids and said that they never had music 🤔. I had 3 young children and 3 older children on the caboose., 4 lollipops were left, why? I don’t know. My son was very happy so thank you for that. Prob won’t see us again otherwise.
