On the Grid : Wilshire Boulevard Temple

"Opening in 1853 as the first synagogue in Los Angeles; it was built in to serve european Jews who had emigrated to the West Coast. After a piece of the ceiling collapsed in 2013, the temple got a massive renovation, which included a complete restoration of the incredible sanctuary dome and its oculus, as well as the intricate murals depicting Jewish history (funded by the Warner Brothers and painted by set designer Hugo Ballin), the 24-foot-diameter stained glass window at the back of the sanctuary, the 30-foot-long spicebox chandeliers, and an enormous organ (which has been called "the most important organ in the West by people who know about organs). Wilshire Boulevard Temple also commissioned artwork from contemporary heavyweights like Jenny Holzer and Marina Abramovic. The newly renovated structure is state of the art and aims to provide a gathering place for cultural life and social events for the diverse neighborhood - including a preschool, dental care, eye care, medical center and banquet space cater to the surrounding community." - The HR Dept

Wilshire Temple Blvd is a beautiful and serene area that offers a unique blend of history, culture, and vibrant community life. The surroundings are well-kept, with lovely architecture that reflects the rich heritage of the area. The iconic Wilshire Boulevard Temple is a standout, offering both architectural beauty and a sense of peacefulness that draws visitors. Whether you're walking by the charming shops, exploring nearby restaurants, or simply enjoying the neighborhood's tranquility, Wilshire Temple Blvd provides a wonderful mix of activities and sights. It’s a fantastic area to visit, whether you're looking for history, great food, or a peaceful stroll through a historic part of Los Angeles.

We were attending a Bat Nitzvah, our first visit. Beautiful facility, Rabbi and Cantor created a wonderful experience for all, both family and friends.

Look at the nice architecture of the temple in the center of Los Angeles.

The very first time I walked into this temple as a tourist, which was last year, I fell in love with it. It's architectural design, and interior were amazing. The atmosphere is peaceful and welcoming. We were greeted by some of the ushers and let us observe. Truly amazing!

This is a gorgeous historic temple but their parking situation is horrible. They frequently block all of Hobart boulevard as people coming from north and south of the temple all wait to turn into the parking structure. I feel bad writing a 1 star review for a temple but I hope someone can fix this and make entry to the garage faster.

Terrible parking makes it basically inaccessible.

Yelp
The good: The rabbi's and most of the staff were kind and we like them. Security seems good (that's a big plus these days). The not-so-good: Discrimination: We were discriminated against for our personal choice not to be vaccinated for covid. This was in 2022, after CDC said that the vaccine does not prevent infection or transmission. We were not permitted to attend our friends' bar/batmitzvas (again in 2022) even though we offered to take rapid tests at the temple door before entering. We appealed to Wilshire Temple with citations to CDC, but were denied (with no citations or reason given - we asked) and they didn't permit any further discussion. We fully understand rules to protect the congregation, but the congregation was not protected by this rule. This rule was about punishing us for a personal decision the Temple didn't agree with. This was (ironically because it was the one we were members of) the only temple we checked that would not allow us to attend services if we took a rapid test before entering.

Yelp
It's one of the most beautiful Jewish synagogues in the United States and one of the oldest in Los Angeles. They spend a fortune keeping it looking so great. The sanctuary dome just underwent a multi-million dollar renovation and it's immaculate. This is my fourth year attending services here. The congregation is so large they have a team of Rabbis on staff and during High Holy days, two shifts of ceremonies are needed to get everyone in. It's one of the hottest tickets in town, and the religious presentations, sermons, and live holiday music are so well choreographed that you would think that it was produced by the Grammy people. It's the type of experience I think that followers of all religions would enjoy. They are currently constructing a community service center that will open in a couple of years in this primarily Latin and Korean area. It will serve the physical and mental health needs of the community less fortunate among other services to be provided. Serving the community to help them rise up is at the sole of the Jewish faith and this Temple is taking the lead.

Yelp
The staff is rude and offensive. I called to have my wedding ceremony in the synagogue but Cheryl was so cold and snobby that my fiancé and I decided we would look elsewhere. A temple is supposed to be welcoming however you won't find that here. Everything seems to be about our financials instead of being about Jewish values. This is a house of gd but somehow Cheryl feels a sense the temple belongs to her. Shame.

Yelp
We were lucky enough to send our oldest son to Glazer Early Childhood Center for 1.5 years, before we moved out of the LA area. Like so many parents, we were so nervous to send our son to his first preschool but he quickly went from just going half-days to begging to stay longer so he could play with his friends. Not only are the teachers incredibly warm and communicative but Floryn and Sydney -and everybody else there -go above and beyond every single day to make your child feel like they are at their home away from home, and to make parents feel secure sending their kids to school. They are so supportive of your child's development and also supportive of the whole family and really know how to foster a strong, loving parent community. If you are a parent who wants to feel involved and connected you can't ask for a better place. Almost 2 years later and we still keep in touch with parents, teachers, and administrators there because the bonds were just so special. We love love loved our time there and were so sad we had to move away from such an incredibly magical place. Our son absolutely loves going to school and my husband and I know that that's because Wilshire gave him such a strong foundation of what school means: friends, learning, fun, family, tradition. We will be forever grateful to everyone there!

Yelp
I attended the Judas Maccabeus Oratorio for Hanukkah. Security was similarly incompetent, taking way too long to check IDs and then letting me through when I barked that I had pre-registered (but they didn't check any list, just waved me through). One thing I have noticed: the more Reform the institution, the greater the pretense of security.

Yelp
I'm not a congregation member so I'm just reviewing a pre Rosh Hashana event I attended. The synagogue itself is absolutely beautiful. Not ostentatious, just wonderful. Refer to an earlier Yelper's review for a little on the architecture. "The Sway Machinery" gave a very moving, and absolutely wild concert here a couple nights ago. It was somehow simultaneously orthodox and irreverent. That worked fine for me. This group features some serious talent. It's the project of various band members who rotate in and out, putting in time when they're not touring with their own bands. A member of Balkan Beat Box heads things up on vocals, guitar & shofar. Both Bass & Tenor Sax, as well as Trumpet were outstanding. Hey, J-Dub Records ... thanks for the invite, and for organzing this great event. And Wilshire Boulevard .... you spectacular Temple, thanks for hosting it.

Yelp
Wow I cant believe someone else reviewed this place. I work for their Sunday school, and its just such a great place. The people are suepr nice. And it's kind of funny when you're running carpool and Jason Alexander picks up his kids you know? All in all its a temple with soooo much money and history that they're going to do great things for a long itme adn thats good for the jews of los angeles.

Yelp
I grew up here, so I might be a bit biased, but I love Wilshire Boulevard Temple. I attended the Sunday school from Kindergarten through confirmation and loved it. Great people, wonderful teachers, and fabulous rabbis. I am so excited to see the "Temple campus" now called the Galzer campus being revitalized. The revamped sanctuary is breathtaking.
