Windham Mountain review mid season
It's been a tough year for all ski areas in the NE this season - cold one day, springlike temps the next, then wind and rain. Seems the only weather we're not getting enough of is; snow.
So that's when having a plan, an approach, a philosophy to achieve the best results possible, when so much is unknowable, is critical.
I give kudos to Windham Mountain and three cheers to their snow makers, groomers and mountain team for providing consistently good skiing since opening with just two trails right after Thanksgiving. I think this year, Windham Mountain really shines!
So far this year, I have not hit one rock or pebble (and virtually no brown spots), and all trails had decent base - indeed, their approach early on was to focus on base depth and not width. Other hills that went for full coverage lost more terrain when the rains came.
Windham also blew many 'whales', those huge mounds of snow (sometimes 20' high - or more!), on the just about every cold night they had and it's served them well; these whales 'bank' the snow, allowing the pile's moisture to drain out over a few days, then when needed, they can groom it out to corduroy, and because it's less wet to begin with, the result is a better, softer and longer lasting surface. Also - it's super fun to ski those big mounds!
At this point in the season, weekends are busy, so the early bird gets the worm - I usually show up for first chair and am done by 11am, when the crowds are swelling up. Mid week, it's all yours - I haven't waited at all in any line during the week since November.
One complaint is that there continues to be issues with some lifts. For the most part they work fine, but when you get stuck on a lift - or the crowds are building because of a mechanical issue on another lift, it tends to stick with you.
On the other hand, Windham Mountain has some great lifties that make waiting your turn much more enjoyable. Just don't have Will throw the yellow flag at you! (if you go out of turn!)
The addition of the "Parachute Bar" on the patio, is a great place to meet, though I prefer to go upstairs to Season's bar where I can get my Guinness.
The vibe here is very much a family-friendly mountain, though seems friendly all around. I've made friends on the lift and met clients here as well. When I invite guests here to ski, I don't have to worry about being embarrassed by facilities that are run-down, dirty or uninviting or by rude staff. I see the General Manager and President, Chip Seamans out and on the hill often - last time he was at one of the lifts observing the training of a new liftie. When they have First Tracks up and running (closed during pandemic), he's sometimes with us skiing at warp speed at 7am along with the rest of the hard cores.
So, my complaints are minimal to the overall skiing experience at Windham Mountain, which has been a great place to ski, hang out with friends and have a nice day.
PS; I have over 50 days of skiing so far this year, (as of 2/22/22 - over 30 at Windham Mountain.)
