Windmill De Adriaan (1779)

Windmill De Adriaan (1779) is a beautiful and historic landmark that perfectly captures the charm of Haarlem. Standing proudly along the Spaarne River, the windmill offers fantastic views of the city and surrounding area, especially from the upper levels. The interior museum is well presented and gives an interesting insight into the history of Dutch windmills and De Adriaan’s own dramatic past, including its reconstruction after the fire. The setting is very picturesque, making it a great spot for photos and a relaxing walk along the river. Friendly staff and a peaceful atmosphere add to the experience. A visit to De Adriaan is both educational and enjoyable, and it’s a must-see for anyone exploring Haarlem.

This tour was a great addition to our day trip to Haarlem. It was walkable from the city center and easy to find. The groups are small, which allows for questions and conversation with the guide, who was outstanding. They pack a lot of scaled models and demonstrations into the tour and we all found it really interesting. We are a family of four with college aged kids who enjoy these kinds of things, so it was a great fit for our family. If you have younger kids, there is plenty to look at it, but the subject matter might not be as engaging to them. Lastly, to participate in the whole tour you will need to be able to climb several short but steep flights of stairs. There is a sitting area on the main level if you have a family member who wants to join, but may not participate in the tour. Great photos from the top, but just be aware that some of the exterior is concealed with scaffolding at the moment (December 2025).

This is a great little tour, and definitely worth the 1hr and minimal entry fee. Our guide was excellent, and we learned heaps about the history and technical workings of the windmill. Views are great from the top too!

This was absolutely a highlight of a river cruise that ended in Amsterdam! We took a day trip to Haarlem and visited this working windmill. For a very reasonable fee, we were invited inside and to the top on a guided tour. Unspoiled and stunning! Highly recommend!

This place was a highlight of our trip to the Netherlands. Great exhibits with models of windmill components, and excellent your guide, good view, and of course the windmill itself. (BTW it's a recreation of the original that burned down in 1932)

What an interesting tour with guides who do an excellent job explaining history, mechanics and engineering in an interesting manner. Our guide Jan even went above and beyond to give me insight on my Dutch last name. I can’t wait to do more learning on my own about the Dutch after this experience. This is a must-do when in Haarlem!
