3 Best Day Trips from Sydney | Condé Nast Traveler

"Set in the heart of Pokolbin, the Small Winemakers Centre showcases the largest range of premium wines in the Hunter Valley, largely from boutique wineries like Little Wine Company, Silkman Wines, and Hart & Hunter. Relax at the cellar door’s tasting bar, where you can sample more than 45 wines—shiraz, semillon, and barbera, among them. Read the tasting notes, decide your favourites, and discover new varietals. Who knows? You might even discover a new weeknight favorite to replace that C+ merlot you've been swigging." - Sophie Davies

LOVED this stop on our Hunter Valley visit! Shannon made the tasting extra special and extra fun. I appreciated tasting different wines from the area without having to go to different locations. Spotting the roos in the vineyard was an extra bonus. Highly recommend

Wine tasting was absolutely phenomenal, lovely views of the lake, and such great service! Our server was very knowledgeable about the wines and tailored our experience accordingly. Would 100% recommend, thank you so much! Incredible wine for incredible value

Great wine tasting hosted by Adam. His knowledge and passion for wine were exceptional. He recommended wine we would usually not like and we ended up buying a bottle we loved it so much! Definitely recommend to come here for a relaxed but informative wine tasting.

Nice place to stop for a bit of DIY wine tasting. You get provided with the glasses and a book to read up on what wines are available, you have a card to spend $30 on tastings from the machine. Some of the best wines from The hunter included in the tastings. You can then grab a glass or bottle of wine and sit outside and enjoy the lovely quiet bush scenery. We also ordered a cheese platter to go with our wines 🙂

Didn’t enjoy my experience with this winery. We arrived to our booking on time. It was for an occasion. The woman who served us wasn’t the nicest. I ordered an espresso with my bottle of wine and had to wait for it for about an hour. I came up to ask where my espresso was after about 20 minutes and she said she was busy. I had to ask for it when we were leaving as we had a schedule. So awkward and unprofessional. The others from the group mentioned she was rude to them also. Replying: That’s so wild because we called up and said that we were 16 and can we book and they said no you can just walk in. I’ve worked in hospitality for many years and would recommend to have more structure if you want the service to run smoothly or perhaps more staff?

My partner and I visited the Wine House and were not disappointed. From the time we walked in, we were made welcomed by Adam and Phoebe who showed us around and set us up for some wine tasting and a bite to eat. They were so down to earth knowledgeable, funny and engaging. We walked away with a few of our favourite wines 🍷 and an enjoyable experience. While we were there, work was being done outside in the gardens to plant a variety of Indigenous bush tucker plants.. what a fantastic idea! We will definitely be coming back and letting our friends know about this place! Thank you to Adam and Phoebe for making our visit a memorable one ❤️ see you next time :)

This place is terrific. I’ve been visiting since 2015 and a club member since 2019 so maybe a bit biased. Of course I’d probably not stay a member for so long if it wasn’t so great. On this visit, Tonia looked after us and was the perfect host. Knowledgeable about the wines and wineries, helpful, and friendly. We partook in the Iconic tasting which allows us to sample a number of top tier wines of our choosing. I love the self serving enomatic system! All the cellar doors are great in the Hunter but I just love that a visit here allows me to try wines from a number of different wineries. With so many different varieties, it’s great and you feel like you’ve done the whole Hunter. Great central location and the tasting room has a great atmosphere and is in a beautiful spot with bushland surrounding. Add it to your Hunter itinerary, you won’t regret it!!

Side Bar for Cold Chisel & Co on Saturday night - a very civilised alternative to being at the concert next door. Sound was great, staff were friendly, & wine was delicious (and much more reasonably priced than at the concert!). We had seats under cover (out of the rain) with Indian food & brownies for dessert. Lots of fun 🤩

Yelp
In terms of just wines, this is my favourite place in the Hunter (after 2 visits). In terms of "whole experience", the tasting at Scarborough might just take it by having food, a more "theatrical" tasting, and a slightly more impressive location. The idea is pretty simple: as per the name, small winemakers doing interesting things are stocked. And there is a lot of choice. Nothing I tasted was boring or mainstream, one of the semillons might be the closest but its nose of butter pastry and jackfruit was definitely quite a departure from the norm of grassy passion fruit. I did not know people did Barbera or Sangiovese in the Hunter, but they do and it's glorious. And for once the people selling the wine know about the wine. The philosophy of the house is that everybody has different tastes and everything they stock is good, so they shy from making strong recommendations and encourage you to try things you do not recognise. It's a good idea especially with that list. Just schedule a chunk of time, and explore and let your tastes and the experienced staff guide you. I noted Epicure, the cafe next door, has lovely outdoor seating shielded from the horror that is Roche (Tempus Two etc.) by a thick row of trees well padded with rushes. It's just off the busiest street but completely quiet with only the rustling of gums and the odd water bird in courtship. I've saved the address for our next trip, and it will be tough for other wineries to compete for my luggage space with what's on offer here.
