In terms of just wines, this is my favourite place in the Hunter (after 2 visits). In terms of "whole experience", the tasting at Scarborough might just take it by having food, a more "theatrical" tasting, and a slightly more impressive location.
The idea is pretty simple: as per the name, small winemakers doing interesting things are stocked. And there is a lot of choice.
Nothing I tasted was boring or mainstream, one of the semillons might be the closest but its nose of butter pastry and jackfruit was definitely quite a departure from the norm of grassy passion fruit. I did not know people did Barbera or Sangiovese in the Hunter, but they do and it's glorious. And for once the people selling the wine know about the wine.
The philosophy of the house is that everybody has different tastes and everything they stock is good, so they shy from making strong recommendations and encourage you to try things you do not recognise. It's a good idea especially with that list. Just schedule a chunk of time, and explore and let your tastes and the experienced staff guide you.
I noted Epicure, the cafe next door, has lovely outdoor seating shielded from the horror that is Roche (Tempus Two etc.) by a thick row of trees well padded with rushes. It's just off the busiest street but completely quiet with only the rustling of gums and the odd water bird in courtship. I've saved the address for our next trip, and it will be tough for other wineries to compete for my luggage space with what's on offer here.
