Austrian Wine Regions: The Best Wineries in the Kamptal, Kremstal, and Wachau - AFAR

"Martin Nigl is a first-generation winemaker who started to make his own wines in 1985 after convincing his family to keep their property’s grapes rather than selling them to the local cooperative. The winery sits below castle ruins tucked into the Krems Valley in Senftenberg, the northernmost part of this winegrowing area in Austria. Weingut Nigl includes an onsite restaurant and hotel, plus a tasting room where visitors can sip riesling, grüner veltliner, chardonnay, and sparkling wines that gently reflect the differences of each year’s growing season." - Sarah Bray

An absolute gem in Kremstal. The room we stayed has a lot of space and it was overlooking the vineyards. The hotel is located around vineyards and just under some historical ruins. There are many hiking paths and cycling trails around. It is totally dog friendly. The breakfast every morning was amazing, we had dinner once and it was also really great. One thing I realized that they used the best material while renovating/building the place. The spa area was also spotless. What would make the place heaven-like: A better wifi connection in the Loft Herzstück. And also the spa area closes way too early we think.

Do you want to have an exceptional experience with a young promising chef? This is your chance! From appetizer to main course to dessert - local ingredients and a flawless result. Wine pairings imaginative and thoughtful. The exterior of the restaurant is inspiring and the service is friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend it for your attention.

Five star rating from me for the kind service and care! Our flight was cancelled and we could not arrive, the hotel was extremely helpful in supporting our situation. Usually the recomendation is for the stay itself, but the kind service given in this case is worth mentioning here and we definitely look for the first opportunity to make Nigl Weinhaus our home while visiting Wachau!

Beautiful, brand new wellness hotel in the heart of the picturesque Wachau region: with excellent food, wine, cycling, jogging, spa… we had a perfect weekend there. The hotel’s restaurant was spectacular, as were the views, the location, and the wellness area. Thank you!

Spectacular food and drinks in a beautiful, scenic location. Comfortable, shaded seating with beautiful wine grape fields next door and beneath a beautiful castle ruins. A wonderful place to spend an afternoon.

Great wine, food and overall experience. Actually best dining experience so far for me in Austria I would say. Situated in a garden with view of an old castle ruin, great (English speaking) service and ambience, in addition to excellent food made us come back the next day :)

What a nice surprise. Beautiful hotel in the Wachau. Everything was just perfect. A great combination of good wines and food and friendlyness and quietness of the village.

Great winery. We went for a wine tasting, and ended up trying 15 different wines. Martin, the wine maker, his son and daughter came to say hi and discussed the wines were tasting. I love these personal interactions. The restaurant was also very good. Sitting on the lovely terrasse in the middle of the domaine, we had the six course menu with wine pairings. The food was great, but the wine didn’t really match the food. The main reason is that they only serve they wines, so the possibilities are more limited. The beef tartar with their Pinot noir is a must. Nevertheless, we had a great experience and I recommend the both the winery and restaurant.

Yelp
The somm's at Benu have opened my eyes to the vast world of German and Austrian wines. I knew a few Rieslings here and there but now I can add another Gruner Veltliner to the list. Nigl makes a very versatile, easily drinkable one. Apparently they have a hotel and restaurant on their property too. Would be pretty cool to stay, eat and drink yourself into a stupor at this locale. However for now,Ill enjoy the wine with Corey Lee's excellent cuisine...
