Austrian Wine Regions: The Best Wineries in the Kamptal, Kremstal, and Wachau - AFAR

"A first-generation estate launched in 1985 after the owner persuaded his family to keep their grapes rather than sell to the local cooperative, this Kremstal winery sits below castle ruins in Senftenberg near Krems and includes an onsite restaurant, hotel, and tasting room. Visitors can sample riesling, grüner veltliner, chardonnay, and sparkling wines that gently reflect each vintage’s character; the standout treat is the sweet trockenbeerenauslese “TBA,” which balances luscious fruit notes with ripping acidity and—if available at the cellar door—sometimes shows delightful age." - Sarah Bray

The hotel exceeded our expectations. The location is simply exquisite. From the sun terrace and pool, you can see the castle ruins atop the hill. The hotel is a great example of modern architecture. The restaurant and some rooms are located in an old farmhouse that has been beautifully renovated. The renovation was done with great respect for the original building. These old buildings are connected to a new building by a subterranean corridor. The new building is embedded into the vineyards, and its terraces mimic the vineyard terraces, allowing the building to blend into the surroundings without disturbing them. Very well done! The rooms are simple in a good way. Although good materials are used everywhere, the overall feeling is fresh and decent, without the unnecessary decadence sometimes found in more expensive hotels. The pool is small, more for bathing than swimming, but the entire pool area is lovely. Breakfast is really good. The restaurant itself is really cozy. The breakfast options are fine. Don't get me wrong; it's generally great. However, considering the price level of the hotel, we've had better breakfasts at Wachau wine hotels. I really liked meeting the owner at breakfast. This is precisely the personal touch that you cannot find even in a five-star hotel. In summary, the experience is one of continuity with respect to previous generations and the surrounding nature. I think it's unfortunate that the pool closes so early. It would be manageable to keep it open until at least 9 p.m. We stayed in small hotels where the pool was open 24 hours. It's especially great to cool down in the pool before bed on such a hot summer day. Yes, it could disturb the other guests, but judging by the other guests (middle aged to older, decent ones), this probably won't be a frequent issue. A polite request to be quiet after 9 pm would probably suffice.

This hotel is just shy of being great. If you’re Austrian this will be an excellent stay I am sure. The hotel rooms are very modern and comfortable. The bed and sofa were comfortable and the patio has an amazing vide of the valley. The rooms are not air conditioned, which is to be expected in Austria, however the sheer volume of the restaurant makes it difficult to sleep at night if you open your window. Despite “quiet hours” for the hotel the restaurant had very loud crowds every night until midnight. The sound from the restaurant courtyard directs the sound at the hotel rooms. I’m glad those at the restaurant were having a good time, but we had to choose between hearing them drunkenly yell and laugh with the window open or overheating with the window closed. The restaurant itself was just okay. The servers were friendly, but they did not explain any of the wines at this winery. The food to wine pairings didn’t seem to make sense to me. For the cost of dinner here for two people I would unfortunately say it is not worth the price. We had cordon bleu and schnitzel, expecting an elevated preparation for the cost, but it was indistinguishable from the same dishes available at any local tavern. The restaurant location and setting is very beautiful, however. The spa is certainly excellent. The saunas and pool were very relaxing and the view from the pool elevates the experience. On a final note, there is an honesty bar where you can grab a bottle of wine or two after the restaurant closes to enjoy in your room and bill to your account. We had to discover this while walking around, though, it was never explained during check in. It was a nice addition to have access to. Overall I would recommend staying here, but would implore the winery to figure out a way to deal with the noise the restaurant courtyard generates for their hotel guests.

An absolute gem in Kremstal. The room we stayed has a lot of space and it was overlooking the vineyards. The hotel is located around vineyards and just under some historical ruins. There are many hiking paths and cycling trails around. It is totally dog friendly. The breakfast every morning was amazing, we had dinner once and it was also really great. One thing I realized that they used the best material while renovating/building the place. The spa area was also spotless. What would make the place heaven-like: A better wifi connection in the Loft Herzstück. And also the spa area closes way too early we think.

Do you want to have an exceptional experience with a young promising chef? This is your chance! From appetizer to main course to dessert - local ingredients and a flawless result. Wine pairings imaginative and thoughtful. The exterior of the restaurant is inspiring and the service is friendly and knowledgeable. I highly recommend it for your attention.

Five star rating from me for the kind service and care! Our flight was cancelled and we could not arrive, the hotel was extremely helpful in supporting our situation. Usually the recomendation is for the stay itself, but the kind service given in this case is worth mentioning here and we definitely look for the first opportunity to make Nigl Weinhaus our home while visiting Wachau!

Beautiful, brand new wellness hotel in the heart of the picturesque Wachau region: with excellent food, wine, cycling, jogging, spa… we had a perfect weekend there. The hotel’s restaurant was spectacular, as were the views, the location, and the wellness area. Thank you!

Great wine, food and overall experience. Actually best dining experience so far for me in Austria I would say. Situated in a garden with view of an old castle ruin, great (English speaking) service and ambience, in addition to excellent food made us come back the next day :)

Yelp
The somm's at Benu have opened my eyes to the vast world of German and Austrian wines. I knew a few Rieslings here and there but now I can add another Gruner Veltliner to the list. Nigl makes a very versatile, easily drinkable one. Apparently they have a hotel and restaurant on their property too. Would be pretty cool to stay, eat and drink yourself into a stupor at this locale. However for now,Ill enjoy the wine with Corey Lee's excellent cuisine...
