15 Best Castles in New York

"A 'live-in art project' since construction began in 1970, Wing's Castle in the village of Millbrook operates as a bed-and-breakfast with four accommodation options — including a standalone fairytale-like cottage — and sits next to Millbrook Winery (open daily for tastings from noon to 5 p.m.), with downtown Millbrook just a 10-minute drive away." - Lauren Dana Ellman Lauren Dana Ellman Lauren Dana Ellman is a New York-based writer and editor who specializes in travel, lifestyle, food, and shopping content. We truly LOVED our stay in the Dungeon Room at Wing’s Castle. Everything was so perfect and charming from start to finish!! There is so much detail in every nook and cranny of this castle, and it’s truly a testament to the creativity, passion, hard work, and love of the Wing Family. This is a gem of a place, tucked away in the perfect spot with gorgeous views (especially at sunset). We HIGHLY recommend staying here and soaking in this amazing masterpiece ♥️

The castle is unique and very interesting, the entire design is done by there family. The Dungeon room was interesting to say the least. The stairway into the room is just like anything you would see in a Medieval castle. Toni the owner gave us a tour of the property and told us her amazing story. Every room on the property was different and amazing. Thank you for such a great time.

Something you don't want to miss. Its a beautiful place with a great story behind it. The tour we received from the Owner was informative and interesting. The rooms were stocked with a continental breakfast that you could take outside and enjoy while over looking the winery below. The grounds were outstanding and i could go on and on about this place but you have to experience it for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

Loved the Wing’s castle. My fiance and I stayed in the cottage across the street due to renovations but it was still a lovely stay. It definitely has an antique look to the place. Very cozy, home away from home. It does have a fully equipped kitchen, lots of space all around. The outside patio and the sun room are a delight. We saw deers, birds and a black bear from afar. You definitely can disconnect from the world (yes they do have wifi) but still you can still enjoy the view. Toni gave use a tour of the castle and all the amazing work her and her husband put inside and outside of the castle. The sunset view is Beautiful! *We traveled to the small town (Toni was a great host) , they have a few restaurants we tried the pub, babettes kitchen and Amenia’s steakhouse. In the little town or village we got lucky during Easter weekend; they had a car show, some fun bouncy house for kids among other activities. We also did the wine tasting at Milkbrooks vineyard and winery (Dogs and kids are welcomed), they have a few loungy areas, truly recommend. - Overall I would come again, and would love to stay at the Castle if possible next time.

Hard to capture in words, what a meaningful experience. 100% highly recommend! Attentive, accommodating, caring and friendly host. Clean, authentic castle experience. Every detail has been thought of! Truly worth every penny! We spent a week in upstate NY and this was the absolute highlight!

Google
Unbelievable labor of love and attention to detail was put into building a beautiful castle. Amazing views of mountains and a very welcoming town made for a relaxing stay. The best part of the stay was meeting are gracious host Toni. Highly recommend staying here and taking the tour of grounds.

Wing's Castle is truly unique, a great work of creative genius. The effort that went into building this amazing structure is incredible. Walking the grounds produces a new discovery each time! The proprietress, Toni Ann Wing, is an exceptional person herself and provides a wonderful tour when you stay there. The place is rurally located, and the small towns nearby are friendly and inviting. It is only half an hour from the Hyde Park area where one can visit the Frederick Vanderbilt mansion, FDR's home and presidential library (which was very infirmative), and the Ogden Mills/Ruth Livingston home (hosting a fabulous antique car show in the month of October (around 500 cars!) And an hour south in Tarrytown is Lyndhurst, a beautiful mansion once owned by Jay Gould, and Washington Irving's home of Sleepy Hollow fame. The town of Millbrook has a great little diner, and in October in the next town over, Stanfordville has a local weekend nighttime haunted Halloween "tour" that was decidedly simple, but different and fun. Toni's husband, Peter, was instrumental in building the very cool props on this Halloween trail throughout the years.||Each of the rooms at Wing's Castle are different and unique. One is the Dungeon and the other is the Chamber. A two-story fairytale house is also available with a kitchen, and across the road by the pond is a chalet type building for two couples (or just one couple) with a kitchen. There is also a mini Stonehenge overlooking the valley below, with table and chairs in the center to watch the gorgeous sunset each night. We asked Toni Wing how on earth they managed to get those large upright stones into the ground, and the answer was "two elephants" who happened to be grazing in the pastures as a retreat from the carnival scene for a few months. She was full of really interesting information, and it was an absolute treat to see a few rooms in her home, the original part of the castle that she and husband Peter built.||No question about it, we will definitely go back to stay again!

Yelp
My husband and I recently stayed at Wing's Castle for two nights and thoroughly enjoyed the whimsical atmosphere. The main rooms were booked for the weekend we wanted, so we opted to stay in the cottage. It was fairytale-like and spacious. We had fun using the record player and listening to the frogs out on the pond at night. We loved the proximity to the Millbrook winery and good restaurants for dinner. Toni, the owner, gave us a tour of the property on the day we checked out. We liked hearing about how she and her late husband first began working on this castle in the 1970s. It's filled with details that anyone who enjoys art would appreciate. It's also a great place for those who are interested in the Middle Ages and fantasize about staying in a castle. We are not typically bed and breakfast enthusiasts, but this stay was one-of-a-kind, and worth doing again!!

Yelp
Wings Castle is an absolutely fantastic experience. Toni the owner is a beautiful human being and loves what she does and loves where she lives. We will be back for another wonderful experience

Yelp
Wing's Castle is a castle bed & breakfast that opened in Millbrook, New York in 2010. It was founded by husband and wife Peter and Toni Wing. Peter was a local artist who worked with all mediums. His family owned the 130-acre Wing Dairy Farm since the 1800s. In 1970, Peter proposed to his wife Toni on a hill overlooking the farm (now the Millbrook Winery). They were both 23 at the time. Peter had a vision to build a fairy tale castle right on top of that hill. Although he was a talented and experienced artist, he had no experience in architecture, carpentry or masonry. In spite of this, he read several books on those subjects and began construction of the castle. Peter built every square inch of the castle (both interior and exterior) with his own two hands and without the help of construction crews. Most of it was built using repurposed materials. Although he thought it would only take him two years, it ended up taking 22 years to complete the main building. Once finished, the Wings began charging for tours of their property in order to generate money. Later they decided to start a B&B operation. Peter set to work on creating guest rooms and other additions to the property. The castle officially opened to guests in 2010. Peter was still working on more additions when he tragically passed away in a car accident in 2014. Toni continues to live in the castle and run the B&B. Their son Charlie has helped to complete Peter's unfinished work. My wife and I stayed at Wing's Castle this past weekend to celebrate our sixth anniversary. The castle and grounds were absolutely beautiful... and a little spooky too. We had a spectacular view of the Hudson Valley and the Millbrook Winery at the bottom of the hill. We stayed in the "Chamber Room" and had a blast exploring all of the various rooms open to the castle guests. We enjoyed meeting Toni, who was just lovely. During our guided tour with her, the other guests were nice enough to let us see their rooms, which included the "Dungeon", the "Annex" and the "Cottage". My wife and I had a very relaxing stay at the castle and we would love to come back some day!

Yelp
After waiting months for our exciting trip we were pleasantly surprised how quaint this bed and breakfast was. There were interesting places to experience but we decided to play games in our room and thought it would be fun to light the fireplace stocked with wood.We opened the flue and lit our fire but the room quickly filled up with smoke.Startled we tried to put the fire out This explains why there was smoke chars already present and a fire extinguisher! We called to tell the owners and they did not seemed concerned. We were told we were not allowed to use the pool but there was towels and bathing suits drying everywhere Apparently the paying guests were not allowed Disappointing!!! Also could definitely use a thorough cleaning

Yelp
Owners are rude ... and unwelcoming. Would not recommend paying for a tour based on how nasty they were when I was looking at the castle from Milbrook Winery

Yelp
Bucket list worthy Words can describe what you will encounter...we stayed in the off season so we were able to book one night in the dungeon.... We arrived at night and were promptly shown to our room and asked what time we wanted breakfast.... 8 am for us on this day... We did some night exploring and took lots of pics. We were up at 630 to watch the sunrise.... breathtaking views of the Hudson and the winery.... We explored till 8 when breakfast was served Best yogurt I've ever eaten. Yummy muffins and fruits. Next was the tour and tale of the Castle... amazing stuff. We will return in the spring to enjoy the pool and wisteria

Yelp
Wing's Castle. Where to even begin?? If you think you know, I promise you...you don't. This whimsical oasis in the Hudson Valley may hands down be the most memorable stay I've ever had. Although a bit more challenging to book than the usual accommodation, I cannot emphasize how worth the extra work is to stay in this special place (just ask any of my friends and family, I've been RAVING about it since our trip there last month!!) Toni is welcoming and accommodating, ensuring that we had everything we could need while we were there and always tossing a recommendations for a new place on the grounds that we'd yet to explore. Although the pictures do represent the eclectic-nature of the castle, what you don't feel until you arrive is just how classy and cozy the rooms truly are. We stayed in the cottage the attention to detail was truly astounding. Every inch of the place feels beautifully curated down to the vintage kitchenware and the binoculars in the sunroom (which you can frogwatch from!) Another thing that the pictures just simply cannot do justice to is the utter SCALE of the castle which you're free to roam at any time of day. Exploring the grounds at night and watching the sunset at the mini Stonehenge (accompanied by our new friend Rabbit the cat!) will be continue to be some of my favorite travel memories ever. One last thing that you absolutely should not miss while you're staying there is Toni's tour. Hearing the tales of how the castle was built from her perspective was so unbelievably wonderful. We're so grateful we stumbled upon this gem and hope that people get to stay here for many years to come!!!

Yelp
What a unique and fun experience. My wife and I knew that we were in for something different when we booked a stay in the dungeon room at Wing's Castle. We visited to celebrate our 12th wedding anniversary and regret that we were only able to stay for one night. We were immediately blown away by the structure itself and the amazing collection of antiques. We were then blown away by the incredible detail and care taken in crafting our room. We would learn later on the tour, that Toni and her husband peter laid every stone, salvaged and recycled materials, and personally crafted every inch of this place. Cons: You might faintly here some footsteps throughout, or her pet macaw at times. (Neither of which were a bother). I would've enjoyed a full breakfast instead of continental. Mainly because I wanted to spend more time enjoying the dining room, and the other guests that we were dining with. Our room was incredibly comfortable on this particularly cold night. An outdoor fire pit would have been fun to sit around and interact with other guests. Don't let the Cons that I mentioned deter you! This is a comfortable and romantic place to stay, run by an accommodating family with an amazing story to tell! Not to mention that it's just a half mile away from the Millbrook winery. Enjoy a tasting and tour of the winery, being a bottle or two back to Wing's Castle and explore the grounds!

Yelp
What an inspirational place The story behind this castle was amazing! To some it might look like a mess but to those who truly understand "creativity " and hard work, will very well appreciate this castle. Mrs. Wing guided tour gives you an insight of this lifelong labor of love and dreams.

Yelp
YOU MUST MUST MUST GO!!! I honestly have no words for this truly incredible castle. This was the most amazing place I've ever been in my life. Do yourself a favor and look up the romantic impressive story on their website. Toni is a beautiful human and makes you feel right at home. Her amazing included breakfast in the great hall was nothing but delicious and delightful. The moat is a pool in the summer!!! And the view, the towers, the sculptures, the intricate artwork everywhere. A true work of art. Mind blowing. I'll be back a million more times. Oh and I can't forget the adorable resident kitty, Rabbit! What a sweetheart. Thanks again Toni!!!

Yelp
I live in Albany, and two of my coworker's told me about this place, and the Vineyard below it. It was a beautiful fall day, so I decided to drive here, enjoy the beauty, and take the tour. If you are into art, creativity, and a cool place to check out--then you've come to the right place. It costs $12 a person for an hour tour--but well worth it! It's a Castle themed Bed & Breakfast, and just the way it was built, and obvious love put into building it is incredible. There are also amazing collectibles inside that you have to see to believe. This place reminds me of a miniature "House on the Rock" in Wisconsin (another amazing place for people to see)! Check the tour times or availability to stay overnight. It's a must see!

Yelp
Being a fan of off the beaten path sight seeing, I loved Wing's Castle. Tour was casual and tour guide Toni was receptive to all my questions. My kids, 13 and 9, thought it was cool. The view is breath taking. The inside of the castle is eclectic.

Yelp
This is a truly remarkable place--a spectacular work of art, more adequately described. Look up Wing's Castle on youtube and check out the brief documentary about Pete Wing to get a full appreciation. He dropped out of highschool, went to Vietnam, came back and started building--without any training/formal education--this masterpiece using recycled material. It's astounding--47 years in the making. A great place to feel the magic of imagination, with a spectacular view of the Catskill mountains. Although Pete was killed tragically in a crash, his son (Charlie) and wife/fellow artist (Toni) run the castle as a B&B and give daily tours. They are super nice people, very down-to-earth. There are 4 different rooms to stay in, my mom and I stayed in the "Dungeon" Friday to Sunday. So atmospheric and unique! Breakfast every morning is offered with fresh local yogurt, fruits, etc. There is a vineyard in walking distance, also a raw milk farm. A great place to get away!

Yelp
Charles, son of the original artist Peter Wing, gave my husband and I a fabulous tour today. In spike of the fact that the original tour giver was not in today, Charles stepped up and made it awesome for my husband and myself in an incredible 45 minute tour of his Father and Mother's genius. This $12 tour is sooo worth it if you want to see the mind genius creativity of one man. I would try to describe what you will see, but I would fall short. Just go, you wont be disappointed. Charles, our guide and the son of the original artist, is a self-deprecating person, not openly willing to accept praise or responsibility for the ongoing creations at the castle. To an outsider, Charles, you are to be so commended for your continued creative contribution and dedication to your Father's legacy. We have decided that we would love to come back as bed and breakfast guests. Check out their website to see the sleeping rooms! And hat "pool" (moat) is sooo clean and beautiful looking!

Yelp
The history of the castle is very impressive. The tour lasted 20 minutes. They did not show us the bedrooms or guest home because someone was renting it. We were able to see the living room, bathroom and kitchen only. Way overpriced. $12 for adults and $8 for my children who under 10 yrs old.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I stayed here in July 2012 for my husband's birthday. I surprised him with anight in a castle and he, in return, surprised me with a marriage proposal as soon as we got to our room (the Tower Room). The castle is completely inspirational. We had a personal tour and then went off to dinner to celebrate. After, we sat outside on the patio, drinking wine under the beautiful starry July sky. I cannot imagine a better evening. The Tower Room was adorable and right out of something in Harry Potter or Shrek's cottage - very cute, antiques everywhere. Amazing mosaic bathroom. We had a continental breakfast on the patio in the morning and had free reign of the grounds to wander and take in the views of Hudson Valley. The Wings were absolutely amazing and I cannot wait to go back. It is definitely worth the trip - either for the tour or an overnight adventure.

Yelp
I was lucky enough to get a room for valentines day weekend. This castle truly is enchanting. It feels amazing to witness it all. And it all comes to life when you speak to Peter, the creator. The history behind this creation is almost unbelievable, one man with ideas too far ahead of his time, self taught built all of this and eclectically decorated. Every item purchased, scouted or received as a donation, he will not admit he methodologically placed and decorated with, has an amazing story and history. The tour is fascinating. We slept in his dream and enjoyed breakfast in the morning. can't wait to visit again in the summer.

Yelp
Incredible! Both from an experience standpoint, and for the art and passion Pete and Tony put into building a beautiful home. They are humble when they share it all with you, but it is far more extensive and beautiful than what you can find in any of the photos on the web. They are now offering B&B rooms, currently two. One is in what will be the final B&B section of the property and the other is in their daughter's former room in the main house. We slept in what used to be their daughter's room: in the turret, above the kitchen, with a loft where you could just imagine a young girl played princess, in her very own castle. A truly memorable experience! And breakfast at the Red Devon was delish! Thank you Pete and Tony for sharing your history and this incredible legacy you have built! A definite MUST visit, and conveniently located to Millbrook Vineyards and others along the NY Wine Trail.

Yelp
Came across Wing's Castle via a Google search and called to inquire about their B&B option. Peter was pleasant on the phone and offered me the cottage because the 2 rooms in the castle were booked up. We first visited the castle and took the tour with Peter. Very cool and unique, though still under construction. Then we were given the keys to the cottage, which looks like it belongs in a fairy tale, and left to our own devices. The view of the neighboring forest and swamp was gorgeous (don't be thrown by the word "swamp", it's actually very cool!) The continental breakfast was a perfect spread to enjoy while watching the sun come up the next morning. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because you are completely offline when staying in the cottage. No TV, no WiFi and my cell signal was really bad. Though I'm sure there are a ton of people that would enjoy that kind of thing.

Yelp
This is a truly remarkable and special place to visit and/or stay. We had rented the Dungeon room for two nights, and despite my car breaking down on the way, the owners were more than happy to accommodate us and even give me a lift to the local winery (Millbrook Winery) to pick up a bottle of wine. Made from recycled materials, with love, grit, and sweat, this is a wonderful place, with lots of nooks and crannies, and a truly eclectic collection of historic memorabilia inside -- perfect complements to a creative castle such as Wings. Great stay!
