10 Best Museums in Denver | Condé Nast Traveler

"Filling airplane hangers of the former Lowry Air Force Base in eastern Denver, this museum is dedicated to the history of aviation and space travel. Everything about the museum is big: The hanger reaches high into the air, huge jets dwarf the tallest visitor, and some 182,000 square feet of exhibition space is filled with space rovers all the way down to military uniforms. But the museum also wants people—and especially kids—to interact with their exhibits, so don’t miss the flight simulators that let you pilot different aircraft." - Megan Barber

Google
Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum totally rocked my expectations! The temperature inside was perfect, and I loved that it wasn't too crowded, so I could really take my time exploring. They have an incredible collection of aircraft, including real planes that served the U.S. military. I even got to check out a recreational helicopter and some amazing 1:1 scale models from war movies! The NASA history section was super interesting, and there was just so much to learn about aviation history. It's a great place to spend a couple of hours in a peaceful, recreational setting. Definitely a must-see for anyone interested in flight and space!

Google
I could spend hours here. I'd swear these planes look like they can still be flying. Beautiful hangar, so much to see, even included Star Wars displays! Went there over the Father's Day weekend, so it was free for me and my son-in-law. I only paid for my daughter and granddaughter. My first visit to the museum. Wish I had come here sooner. Love the Rocket ice cream shop next door! There was nice waiting to buy or enter, but it did get busier into the late morning and early afternoon. Parking seems plentiful. I hope to revisit next year.

Wow this aviation and space museum was spectacular. It was cool to see the aircraft’s and take pictures. Plenty of parking and staffs were extremely friendly they even allowed us to take pictures with them! I highly recommend you to visit here if you are into planes and the history of Colorado Air National Guard.

Google
First time ever visit and is well worth the time spent looking around for 3 hours. Great displays and signs with info. Motion activated lights in and around the aircraft to be able to see inside areas, very well thought out.

Google
Place was ok, lots of old planes etc. Enjoyed the Star Wars displays. Lots of reading or just walk through and see the planes. Many items specific to just Colorado.

Google
We drove up from Tulsa OK. This was not what we came for but it was one of the huge highlights of the trip. Getting up close with the F14 is awesome. The facility is super well played out and the birds are beautifully presented. I will be making another trip up with my dad for him to experence this as well!

Google
It's been 38 years since I've been to hangar 1. It's where I went to tech school when I was in the USAF. I really enjoyed touring this place today while in town. I am glad to see that hangar 1 is continuing to be used for education of aviation & the military.

Google
I am not a fan of military equipment, my 8 years old son pretty interested in these stuff, there are some of the interactive games there, but you need buy extra tickets, the space there not big enough, the kid might feel bored within half day, the introductions are hard for small kids to understand, and only a few employees can have oral introductions.the good things are there are many restaurants outside the museum for the lunch.overal the museum need to reposition to its target audiences, if for kids, it will need more interesting and fun facts content to attract kids. If for adults, I think it is totally no enough stuffs to see here.

Yelp
Great museum with friendly staff. They had lots of cool exhibits with tons of information. I loved looking at the various planes, helicopters, and other things related to aviation. I learned a lot. It's spacious so we never felt crowded. There is tons of free parking both in front of the museum and in the back of the museum. Our favorite part was the flight simulator. My kids also liked the Space Bike. We got hungry, so we didn't get through the whole museum, however, there is lots to see and do. You could very well spend hours there. It was worth the cost.

Yelp
Interesting museum for a deep dive in aviation history. It's great that they put their massive hangar to use, there are lots of planes to see. Having said that, the layout is a bit strange, with everything pushed to the outer perimeter of the space, leaving the middle mostly unoccupied. It's a bit awkward having to find hidden nooks to see some of the smaller planes and other paraphernalia; almost like they didn't care if some things get skipped. There are only a handful of exhibits outside the hangar, easy to see with a quick stroll near the parking lot. All in all, for around $20 a ticket, it's not a bad way to spend a couple of hours, but I would prioritize other Denver attractions first, unless you're a huge aviation buff.

Yelp
Had a family and suggested to take my parents here. It was everyone's first time except me. They all really enjoyed it. My sister wants to come back again with her husband and kids. I got excited and forgot to take pictures as well as chasing my little nephew. I did take a picture of the magnet I bought though. I always love coming here and looking at the history of changes of our country. Fascinating to see history and the incredible planes. Definitely come here if you like history and airplanes. It's great that they saved a little from Lowry Airforce Base. It was a good day with the family.

Yelp
Super fun place for kids and adults! Lots of planes, helicopters, military uniforms, and more to explore. They have a great space exhibit too. Large play area for kids. Don't forget to check out the top floor where you can learn more about Lowry, and check out views from the tower!

Yelp
Huge airport hangar with many old airplanes with tons of history. Easy to walk around to view each plane at your own pace. There were 2 cockpit simulators for people to get into and experience. There were at least 2 floors that were easily accessible, a gift shop, and an outdoor cafe. A fun place to take the family or just by yourself. There was a plane used in the Star Wars movie and also a plane used in Top Gun. Ask to see if there are any volunteers that can explain some of the planes.
google avatar

Phillip B.

Yelp
Paid another visit to the museum so all three of the godsons can experience it. They had had fun touring a few of the cockpits though the volunteer was kind of cranky this go round. Also unfortunately two of them were too short to ride the flight simulator in which that was their main reason for going. I'm not sure if they have it in their site but it would be useful. All in all the last stop was like a daycare room that made their day. Unfortunately we had to cut it short. If we come back we'll know where to go. This visit was my personal favorite The Berlin Airlift. It's near and dear to me as I was stationed in West Berlin Germany while the wall was up.

Yelp
What a spectacular museum. I was invited here as a part of an event. This spacious museum pays tribute to all of those that have contributed to our advancement in aviation. It's located on a previously active air force base. The moment you pull up to this place you are submerged into the world of aviation. So much history, artifacts, and hands on exhibits you could easily make a day out of this place. There is a gift shop that offers a wide variety of products and memorabilia. I really enjoyed this place.
google avatar

Isaac A.

Yelp
It is a cool place that had vehicles from across all of the history of flight. There are a lot of warplanes, a huey, some awesome simulators, and a ULA Centaur! You can also get a look out of the control tower. The place is a good size and takes maybe 2 hours to walk through. There's a smaller second floor area also that takes you up to the tower. It makes for a great afternoon if you're in the area and the gift shop had some interesting items.
google avatar

Alisa J.

Yelp
Really cool museum! Was able to see everything in 3 hours but you could spend more time here. Cool historical information and items but it's also fun to just look around as well.
google avatar

Bonni R.

Yelp
Such a cool place to spend a few hours learning about the history of flight and space exploration and see the exhibits. There is a large, free parking lot and when we walked in we were greeted by the friendly staff members. There is a table where a couple of volunteers were sitting. They explained the layout of the museum, the times of the films in the theater, and what's on each floor. The main floor is a huge hangar filled with spacecraft that span decades. They have a new Wright Brothers exhibit and two flight simulators. There are small galleries with different displays along the back wall. They also have a large children's play area and restrooms with changing tables. There are a couple of fun Star Wars exhibits with a plane signed by George Lucas and cast. The written information at each exhibit is presented in easy to understand language. The second floor has the history of the Lowry Airforce base and neighborhood. The third floor is an observation tower to see the city and mountain views. I found this to be a comprehensive museum that is easy to navigate and very entertaining. The gift shop was closed for inventory but looked like it had some fun items.

Yelp
I wanted to LOVE this museum and struggled to give 4 stars. But, I am a museum junkie, so I need to give them props. I was also at a special event, which was done poorly. This was not on the museum, but the organizers. So my opinion is separate. I LOVED the pieces I could see -- the B-52, the stealth bomber, the Rotorcyle and more. I LOVED the Star Wars pieces! I saw that the area is named for Harrison Ford. But I struggled to find the connection. Nothing seemed to put the Denver location together with Harrison Ford & Star Wars other than, "he loves airplanes." I was left with a curiosity and couldn't find the answers. Next, I felt that the place needs a good general cleaning. All of the airplanes had a layer of dust. This left the museum feeling uncared for. Because I attended a large event, the airplanes seemed to be haphazardly scooted out of the way. We could still see the exhibits and walk through them, but the displays were awkward. My event was billed as being in this wonderful venue. Finally, the catered food was acceptable but an odd combination. That's also on the organizer, not the museum. I did enjoy the experience, which is why this gets 4 stars. The average museum costs are affordable, but my event was very expensive. Hopefully this review will help you make your decisions and enjoy the day.

Yelp
Great space with lots of cool looking planes. Fun to learn the history of it all. No wait to get in and a nice spot to stop by after grabbing something to eat.

Yelp
My wife and I love this museum. It's incredibly well run, laid out well and very clean. This museum covers pretty much every stage of flight from Kitty Hawk through landing on the moon. The exhibits are fantastic and well maintained. I love seeing all the iconic aircraft so close up. It's fascinating to see how small planes were when they started and how massive they are now. They have flight history so well laid out that it's easy to follow along. This museum will be of interest to young children and adults alike. I've seen Top Gun a dozen times and had no idea the F-14 was so huge. And the B1 Bomber is absolutely massive. I learn something new each time I visit this museum as does my lovely wife. It's wide open and a joy to tour. Make sure you go up the stairs and check out the upper level. It's cool to look down on the topside of the aircraft as well.

Yelp
Can't help but be in awe of that huge Boeing RB-52B Stratofortress (USAF) out front! It is enormous and provides shade! I recommend buying the Denver City Pass. I chose 3 attractions to visit and used one for this visit. Saved some money, Make sure you come to this location. I originally went to the Wings Over the Rockies Exploration of Flight and that is not the right place to use this pass. Once here, there's a parking lot and street parking available. It's all free. The entrance looks like an air control tower! I walked in and scanned my Denver City Pass QR Code and was permitted to enter. This used to be the Lowry Air Force Base from 1938 to 1994. They've made great use of this property! There's so much history here! I like that everything is contained in this one hangar. The average time people stay is around 3-4 hours and I think that was how long I was here. Being a weekly Disneyland goer, I keep an eye out for all things Disney. I was happily surprised to see a Star Wars X-Wing Starfighter (3/4-scale replica of the spacecraft flown by Luke Skywalker in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope)! It is signed by Harrison Ford, George Lucas, and David Prowse (Darth Vader)! There's also a cute little Landspeeder with a Storm Trooper next to it! As usual, I could have stayed longer! The highlights were numerous, but these were especially cool: - Looking down on the planes from the walkways on the "second floor". - Seeing a real Purple Heart Medal - Morse Code Machine on which I tried to spell my name - 1945 Willy Jeep - WWII Memorial Sculpture - Buckley Space Force Base Information - Navy Plane with USS George H.W. Bush name on it - Amelia Mary Earhart's & Amelia Rose Earhart's Flight Around the World Exhibit - The sleek "Boom XB-1" Supersonic Testing Jet - The Dream Chaser that looks like a Sting Ray - Jet Ejection Seat - John L. "Jack" Swigert, Colorado's First Apollo Astronaut - CASIS: Science In Space For Life On Earth If you're looking for a neat place to chill for a while, this is the place to come!

Yelp
2LT Francis Lowry, was the only Colorado pilot killed in World War I combat. In 1938 Lowry Field was named after Lieutenant Lowry and in 1955-1958 this base was the initial site of the US Air Force Academy then it officially closed in 1994. WOTRASM is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Hanger #1 inside you will find B1 Lancer and X-Wing startfighter signed by Harrison Ford and B52 Stratofortress. Don't compare this with the Smithsonian in DC, this is a modest museum for the Denver community. They have rotating WWII exhibits and events like "candlelight concerts" feverup dot com highly recommend for a special date night.
google avatar

Xander M.

Yelp
I absolutely love planes. Love them. This museum is HUGE but not completely filled. A whole walk around might take an hour but not more than 3 or so. Can be done in one day. Has so many good large planes, models, and details. History sections were mostly optional and the learning part is self-paced and allows for exploration. I.e: not a typical museum feel. Museum staff were friendly, and helpful.

Yelp
This was my second time to Wings Over the Rockies. Though I find air/space interesting it's not my passion by any means. But I still felt like I saw/learned new things the second go around. I really enjoyed learning about the CO astronauts and seeing how the technology in planes has evolved. It's a great spot to take out of town guests or if you have a passion for flight!
google avatar

Nichole O.

Yelp
Neat place. You get two hours to go through. Simulators cost extra. Amazing to see the size of the planes and to get to see things up close. Can walk through in bout hour/hour and a half.
google avatar

Regina C.

Yelp
The second museum to visit during our trip! We got there at 4:30 and only had 30 minutes to fully look at the whole place! Good thing that we were able to and even had a few minutes to spare at the end. It was a very chill, relaxing nuseum that had really amazing displays of different kinds of aircraft.
google avatar

Amy B.

Yelp
A good place to take your kids or to take a date if you're a little bit nerdy. No need to be an Air Force vet or aerospace engineer (just hypothetically, of course). Does not compare to the National Air & Space museum, but it's hard to compete with the Smithsonian. A few displays could use some updating. Lowry beer garden is adjacent to the museum if you'd like food (the museum doesn't have a food court or anything)
google avatar

Allan A.

Yelp
This was a positive experience with many planes on display, a couple of short films, and some exhibits on engines among all things on display. There were little to no exhibits dating from 2010 to today. With the digital transformation occurring, this would make the musiem more contemporary.
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
Larger than it looks like from the outside. Once inside your inside an old Aircraft hanger. Probably big enough to fit a blimp  there's a lot of information on how aircraft and spacecraft have been impacted by Colorado. There's replicas of spacecraft and some older simulators for commercial aircraft. There's a lot of gliders and a concept of the new Boom supersonic jet. There's an awesome replica of Star Wars X-Wing that George Lucas had built for the Rerelease of the 1st 3 films in the 90's. It is signed by the cast. Elsewhere there's also a Sand Racer. There's quite a few normal civilian planes but there are at least 20 Military Jets. The biggest being the B1 Bomber, it's huge. My favorite an F-14. Basically every Vietnam era jet and some Korean War. It was a great way to spend 2 hours. Overall a 5 star review. Would I return? Yes, a fun place to roam and relax.
google avatar

Ebony C.

Yelp
Still trying to determine what we think of it. We're currently sitting in the Harrison Ford welcome video and apparently, it's supposed to start 5 minutes after the hour but it didn't start until 9 after. So far, the displays are interesting. The audio of astronaut accounts are faint...listen closely. More interaction would be nice. I do appreciate they had scooters since my knee did not allow me 5o walk the entire space.
google avatar

Elise C.

Yelp
We've wanted to visit for years, but it was closed for COVID for quite a while. It was worth the wait! While you could probably see everything in half an hour, you'd be depriving yourself of the opportunity to inspect and get a feel for these incredible machines. You can walk under many wings, read up on cool details on the placards, and just sense the presence of each different type of aircraft. There's a little something for everyone here!

Jessica H.

Yelp
Our family, which is not particularly into planes or space, LOVED our visit to this museum overall. We loved walking around looking at all the planes, helicopters, jets, etc. Some of them were so small I had trouble picturing them being able to fly or someone crawl into them! Some were listed as having been made by a "kit"! And of course others were positively massive. There was a traveling exhibit on the Snoopy cartoons and the "Red Baron" plots that kept coming up, and some cute interactive things for kids. The flight simulator was an extra cost of about $12 pp, and totally worth it. My 6 year old went with my husband and it was an 8 minute ride they both still talk about. The short 10 minute film about flight narrated by Harrison Ford plays every hour and is totally worth taking time to see. We were all engaged and enjoying ourselves so much that before we knew it 3 hours had flown by and they were closing! I honestly thought we would stay for an hour or so. This museum participates in ASTC passport program so it was included in our passport. Of course that means we paid nothing out of pocket so that may impact how much value I perceived and your mileage may vary on that.

Yelp
I have been wanting to check this museum out for many years. My oldest son loves history and has always been fascinated with planes. We recently moved back to the Denver area so we decided to finally play this place a visit. The museum is one huge hanger packed full of WWII planes. You can easily spend a couple of hours seeing everything. It was very well organized and clean. There are volunteers throughout waiting to answer any questions you may have about the planes. There was even a previous pilot of one of the planes there working on it. They have a really cool gift shop with all sorts of goodies. My family of nine enjoyed there visiting here and look forward to coming back. If you are in a local or from out of town I highly recommend checking this museum out.

Yelp
How did I spend the afternoon of my day off? At Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum in Lowry. Such a treat to see all these incredible specimens of man versus gravity. I was very impressed by the fleet displayed at the museum. I didn't take pictures, but the uninforms and flight gear were my favorite parts. I also enjoyed reading the stories of the pilots and the history of the former Lowry Air Force Base. Easy parking on-site with beautiful displays outside before you even enter.

Yelp
Wednesday, March 22nd, 2023 We purchased our Denver City Pass C3 online prior to our week long Denver trip 1 of the 3 was Wings Over the Rockies Private free parking lot No wait We throughly enjoyed our time and recommend it to all Truly amazing all we saw and how far we've come along in aviation/space

William P.

Yelp
A great little museum for those interested in all things Air Force and air travel. Nicely wheelchair accessible, too. Best for kids in upper elementary school and higher.

Nigel P.

Yelp
Remarkable array of planes and all so well done with simulators too. A true gem of a place
google avatar

Lyubomir G.

Yelp
There is plenty to see for aviation fans. Would have been nicer to see some more recent aircraft. Museum was a bit dated and certain areas and displays could be improved. Entry fee is lao a bit high for what the museum has to offer. Good amount of history information if you have time to read and watch the movie.
google avatar

Kathy L.

Yelp
Decided to go because my friend is really into aviation. Friend really enjoyed going on flight simulation and said it was very worth it. Lots of parking and family friendly. They let you renter as many time as you want throughout the day. Very big selection of airplanes to see. There's a beer garden and coffee shop that was recommended by the staff. Overall would recommend it if you have an airplane enthusiast.
google avatar

Dang L.

Yelp
We came because the hubby is an aircraft buff. Because of COVID you have to make reservations or they will not let you in. There are plenty of different air craft to look at and take pics with. However my favorite part was the tour. One of the docent was a Vietnam vet who flew 2 of the planes in the museum. As he took us to several planes, he recounted his experience flying in the war and incorporated different facts about the planes which made things much more interesting. If you like aircraft, stop by and make sure sure you do the tour.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
This museum had an interesting variety of aircraft both military and civilian. As and avid science/ space enthusiast I definitely wished that there was more space related exhibits. I did however appreciate the Star Wars T-65 X-Wing Fighter and other Star Wars related memorabilia. I would recommend this place for families or any aircraft enthusiast.
google avatar

Yelp
Great day to visit this museum. Lots of different planes. Kids would enjoy it here located in a nice neighborhood. Ample parking space.

Yelp
This place is super cool for all ages. My boyfriend and I went here, he wanted to check out the cool displays and planes. I thought I would get uninterested super fast, but No I loved the place!!! There is so much to learn, so much to see, and all the employees were so nice. There is also a flight simulator thing which wasn't that expensive, my boyfriend did it and he said he absolutely loved it and its a must try! Anyone who loves Star Wars would also enjoy this place as they have a replica of one of the ship, and also have young Anakin, R2D2!

Loralee W.

Yelp
Very nice museum with beautiful aircraft. The visitor services team is very friendly and the gift shop is unique and fun.
google avatar

Eleni M.

Yelp
Very neat experience! I highly recommend it! There weren't many places where you can walk around and indoor area surrounded by so many airplanes full of history. Our 2 year old enjoyed it as well. Although there isn't much to touch, looking at the planes and reading about them is a treat!
google avatar

Seryozha A.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic visit, not a huge museum but amazing aircraft and you can tour the workshops where they are restoring aircraft's. Volunteers are often veteran military and are very knowledgeable and enthusiastic to discuss the museums exhibits.

Yelp
An excellent venue for our company's conference final night out. This past week we had a conference in the area, and to celebrate our final night out, and close off the conference with a bang, we headed here for some food, drinks, dancing and mingling. They were able to accommodate large buses that dropped off attendees in the front circle, a short walk to the front entry, which was nice as it was snowing that night. Once inside, they had coat check racks for us to be able to drop those there and not worry about dragging them around the space. There were a few setups for drinks and food throughout. In the middle we had a DJ and then a smaller dance floor surrounded by high-boys to place drinks while you were dancing it up! Some extra special items were the photo op inside a jet fighter cockpit, an X-Wing from Star Wars and plenty of memorabilia to take photos of and with - selfies galore!! It had a hangar feel and was very much in vibe with the air and space vibe. Overall: A Great venue for an event with lots to see and do. Definitely take the time to read all the info cards to learn more about each piece. Take some selfies and enjoy!

Yelp
Gives a ton of info and tons of exhibits that range from hot air balloons, space, planes, and rockets so pretty much anything that flies. I'm not interested in planes but I found lots that was interesting and loved learning/ seeing it all. There are guided walking tours for free in the morning. There is a worker who greets you as you walk in that answers your questions and is knowledgeable of the museum. There is also a theater that plays 2 short films. Overall a great experience. The only downside is that the place is a little warm.
google avatar

Greg H.

Yelp
We have traveled the world and traveled many places state side. This may be a super cool place if you have a love for aviation. My family of 5 were not impressed. The best thing it had were the cordial volunteer Veterans. They were first class. Our three kids are ages 12-17. We may be spoiled having been near a lot of Air Force based. If you have visited the Air & Space in DC or the Air and Space Annex in VA area this will be a huge disappointment. If you have not experienced anything better you have not been out enough.
google avatar

Jayden H.

Yelp
I love this place. This location is one of my favorite places to kill time at. I love all the aircraft there and how informational the staff are. I also quite enjoy the Civil air patrol uniforms and history that is at this museum. Finally I quite enjoyed the rotating simulator although I do wish had rudder control. In conclusion this is a great museum

Yelp
Wings Over the Rockies Air Museum is wonderful museum for Aviation fans. Located at the Lowry AFB that was in use in days of past. Parking is free and there is plenty of it. Showed my online tickets that I printed out @ home at the gift shop counter. Walked right in and was amazed at the size of the hangar, huge ...HUGE! Lots of different small engine planes , as well as decommissioned jets, and a few Star Wars movie props. I've been learning about small engine planes for the last 10 years , and the volunteers who work here are full of real first hand knowledge and share their experiences and amazing stories. I spent 3 hours here and it was so informative. There were rooms with donated mementos that were on loan and properly displayed. There was a children's play area , and a flight simulation ( buy tickets online ) gift shop with cool stuff too. I had a great time , I'll be back with my visiting family for sure.

Yelp
I really enjoyed this museum. It had a lot of historical airplanes and the exhibits were all very interesting. The museum is located in a very large hangar on what used to be an old base. They had a couple of videos narrated by Harrison Ford which provided a neat little intro to the history of flight. The planes obviously provide the "wow" factor but I thought the exhibits were equally as interesting providing a very historical perspective on aviation from flight suits, to space, to equipment and instrumentation. I also enjoyed learned about several key Coloradoans? that played key roles in advancing aviation such as Emily Howell Warner who became the first woman commercial pilot. I would also add this is a very family-friendly place. Kids would love it and there are several things here that are hands on and interactive (there's also a ton of space for them to run around and explore!) If you have any interest in aviation or space, I'd definitely recommend this place to explore! Keep in mind, this museum may also be added to the Denver City Pass too!

Yelp
I've always had a love for airplanes and this is the perfect place to check out some cool airplanes. The simulator is fun to check out as well ($7 per person).

Yelp
As a retired vetran of the US Navy and a father of a currently serving US Navy Sailor stationed at Buckley Space Force Base I find it shameful that you would either charge each person or $500 for her to conduct her reenlistment at your location. My daughter along with thousands of others in the Denver area made the sacrifice to serve their country and you can't allow for her to conduct her reenlistment inside without charging $500 or each person that plans on attending her ceremony. Absolutely shameful. Any museum that I ever chose to reenlist at was free of charge for myself and my guests. If it were my decision, I'd take my special moment elsewhere.

Yelp
This was a great aerospace museum! They have a great collection of airplanes and allow you to get very close to them. Very friendly staff who let us come back into the museum later in the day to use the restroom when we went to grab food next door. There's a great kids' play area with a bunch of aerospace themes toys. The gift shop also had a great selection of items for all ages and a variety of interests.

Yelp
I went here with my dad and he loved it! It was also my first time being there. They had a wheelchair for him which was helpful, and amazing volunteers.
