Very nice property, nicely done. Everything was great until we were seated upstairs for our Boxing Day Brunch. Things went downhill fast...
It is important to mention that we just had a great dinner on Christmas Day, drank plenty, had the best time - we were going back to the city but needed a nice brunch with our friends so we decided to give Winvian a try.
I am such a snob yet I hate a place that only offers still or sparkling water. Ummm, I like tap. I know it's crazy but I do.
Then we had to go find our waiter because we waited 15 minutes and nobody came to take our drinks order. So when he finally came, he took drink and food orders at once. I like to enjoy my drink while looking at the menu! Crazy, right?
We were given a 5 second intro to how the menu varies daily depending on fresh ingredients. Hello, we live in NYC, we do get the concept. We also live by the concept of appetizers and mains. Even for brunch. I know, again, crazy, right? All we wanted to know was if there were any specials in addition to the listed dishes...
The menu has maybe a dozen items on it. Soup, salmon, salad, prosciutto croque monsieur, pasta - all in one column. Prices range from probably 12 to 30 or so, yet you have no idea if something is on the smaller side or if it's a larger portion. Strange.
We order a few chickpea salads and the terrines to share. Salad is good. Terrines are OK. I have not tasted the chicken soup (thai) but two people at our table enjoyed it. The croque monsieur was OK. The salmon was ultra bland, resembled a frozen Lean Cuisine meal with the bed of greasy spinach and some tiny cubes of beets. What really disturbed us all was how unappetizing and how downright tasteless the pesto fettucini was. One person sent it back. My boyfriend, who is a huge pasta eater, tried to save his by asking for some cheese - he did finish it. He was not thrilled. Oh, when asking for cheese, he was asked what kind of cheese he'd like as they do offer a selection. Huh?
The $30 Spanish white was pretty good. And so were the complimentary biscotti at the end of the meal.
We're NOT going back and it's a shame as we wanted to stay at the Winvian and enjoy the food just as much.
Mayflower Inn is WAY better. Sorry, Winvian - you don't put the 'win' in Winvian to me.
