"Wirthaus in der Au Tradition meets innovation at Wirthaus in der Au, where Bavarian specialties are updated for modern tastes—especially the dumplings, which are so popular the restaurant sells its own dumpling cookbook. Open since 1901, and conveniently located near the Deutsches Museum, the restaurant is a local favorite not only for its hearty, certified organic fare (roast duck, white sausage, potato salad, soft pretzels), but also for its great selection of beer (including Paulaner), welcoming atmosphere, and historic décor (which ranges from painted ceilings and sturdy wooden seats to a fabulous stein collection). If the weather’s good, grab a seat in the beer garden, where you can enjoy a brew or homemade lemonade under the generous shade of chestnut trees."

The visit has taken place on April 2025. Everything was great and warm. We were accepted half an our earlier than our reservation. The tables were super close to each other. The restaurant was loud but lovely. The lights, the staff with Bavarian customs and … everything was perfect and our hearts feel joy any love when we think of that night. The foods were EXTRAORDINARILY delicious. The dish with ox meat, the cheese taste dish, the steak… a real perfection. The restaurant is UNFORTUNATELY only open form 17:00 and does not serve lunches. That is a big sorrow to us, because we have not been able to visit this place for a second time.

A wonderful cosy place serving a range of tasty traditional German Bavarian dishes. Lots of atmosphere. A nice terrace with large trees offering shade. We visited it after spending time in the Deutsches Museum. It's very close and a perfect place to relax with food and a drink. The personnel members were very welcoming and super helpful, adding to a great experience for us. When brought our drinks we got some crispy bread and salad to share. It was so good we asked some more later on. We chose a variation of dishes: roasted pork, bratwurst both with tasty knödel. And a platter with a variety of small snacks and bites. Great experience and we will definitely come back when in the area. Highly recommend this place.

Google
A true Bavarian gem! The food was excellent—flavorful, authentic, and beautifully presented. The atmosphere strikes the perfect balance between cozy and lively, making it a great spot for both locals and visitors. The servers were polite, attentive, and made us feel very welcome. Highly recommend for anyone looking to experience traditional Bavarian cuisine with warm hospitality.

Found this real nice and quaint restaurant just steps away from the busy Isar bike and walk way. The beergarden is nice, and nit as hustling as others in Munich. So if you like a quieter spot, this is your place. Food and service was great. Had the Leberknödel soup and the Obatzder appetizer, which tasted great. Also the duck and pork roast, which we can recommend. Will go back!

We came here on a Sunday for lunch. The food was delicious, particularly the spinatknodel. We also had a salad on the side and a schnitzel. Together with the drinks, we paid 30 euros per person. The atmosphere in the terrace is good, the neighborhood is very nice and calm despite being close to the city center. The service was nice, and the food came quite fast. We didn’t eat inside, but it looks wonderful too. Would recommend!

The trio of dumplings was incredibly tasty and the service was excellent. The dumplings were all vegetarian which was good.

My wife and I were visiting Munich and the Wirsthaus was recommended to us by our hotel desk clerk. We were looking for good authentic Bavarian food, this place was very good. We walked in without reservations and the hostess was able to seat us at the bar. I had the Bergfex and my wife had the bratwurst. We both loved our dishes. The atmosphere was very good and we would recommend this place to anyone visiting Munich.

Yelp
My go to restaurant when in Munich Delicious Bavarian food with a creative twist and beer served by an amazing staff. Always warm welcoming and accommodating. I recommend to reserve a table in advance as this place gets fully booked everyday. If you want to experience a Bavarian restaurant with waiters and bartenders dressed traditionally, look no further.

Yelp
Friendly server who was kind enough to offer to separate the bill per person which is not something most places would do. I did take a few photos of the interior to offer a view of the building but unable to post all of them. I started with the charcuterie board which was fabulous. The cheeses, meats, spreads were all delicious. Then I had the roasted duck and pork meal which was served with a potato dumpling and a bread dumpling. I was not a fan of the pork despite offering a piece of the crispy skin. The duck however was delicious. I will share another person in my party had the same meal and felt the Duck was too salty I disagreed. Everyone enjoyed their meal. I was able to taste the Spinach dumplings and Spoetzl with Cheese (what Americans would consider macaroni and cheese) both were very good.

Yelp
We stopped in for a fairly late dinner after arriving from NY that morning and catching up on some sleep. Started with the speckknodelsuppe, which was a soup with a beef broth and bacon dumpling and vegetables out of this world delicious, and they delivered a side of cole slaw which will never be beat. I ordered the Bergfex, which was Bavarian duck and roast pork with vegetables and dumpling and red cabbage. All were delicious, and the pork was exceptionally good. We sampled a few of the beers pils, wheat, and 1 other escapes me lol it was a long day. It's just a great restaurant so much we may return Monday. If there are 46 restaurants listed higher than this one, I would live to try them all

Yelp
Visiting Munich from New York during Oktoberfest. Saw a recommendation on YouTube for this restaurant and it didn't disappoint. The food was delicious (coming from someone with a German mother) and the service was attentive. The menu is extensive. Staff switch easily between German and English. We're hoping to come back for their breakfast on the weekend.

Yelp
The service, food, and ambiance are all top notch. The waitress was attentive, patient and kind to our children (a major plus for me). The decor they had up for Christmas Day dinner was gorgeous. Possibly one of my favorite restaurants in Bavaria. My wife and I had the steak and it is sooooooo good. My oldest kid had the Schnitzel and said it was excellent. My youngest had the Knödel sampler and was a very happy camper with his choice. I tried some of the beet Knödel and was surprised how much I liked it (I usually hate beets unless they are pickled). The starter of Knödel beef soup was outstanding. Also: The desserts are exemplary and not an afterthought. The wine list is extensive and runs to gamut from low to high end for all budget levels. The kitchen was slow but somewhat expected as it was super busy and Christmas Day dinner. Never did I feel rushed. It was relaxing experience that I recommend for all foodies. Highly, highly, highly recommended.

Yelp
In short, I ordered schnitzel but the waiter accidentally brought me something else and attempted to give me that instead of my schnitzel. When I told the waiter that I had ordered schnitzel, he looked at me blankly and continued to try to foist this other dish upon me. It was only after I continued to refuse this unwanted dish, and repeat that I had ordered schnitzel, that he relented and walked away with the dish. Certainly no apologies were received. Unfortunately, the schnitzel that I received was badly prepared, to wit, a pool of hot liquid had developed underneath it, ruining its texture. My friend's schnitzel, on the other hand, as well as a schnitzel I saw on another nearby table, were perfectly dry and crispy. I pointed out the defect to the staff, who whisked the schnitzel away without a word and replaced it with a new one, which was better but nothing special. My girlfriend was in a seat with some kind of plant climbing down the wall behind it; it was attacking her back and hair for the duration of the meal.

Yelp
Food was awesome, service (Max) even better. The beef tar tar was very good as was the beer! Fun place.

Yelp
Not sure what the fuss is about. Maybe it's the price point. Everyone raves about the dumplings. The beet dumpling seems to be the favorite. There was no beet dumpling on the menu. Instead there was a curry dumpling. It was okay. Potato dumplings aren't much after all. The potato salad was delicious. The fries were stale. Beer was good and service was excellent. Can't review protein dishes as we cut our losses and left. The place is popular with the locals. So maybe it's just me.

Yelp
Amazing! Delicious! One of my last dinners in Germany. You must get the dumplings (they have one where you can sample all 3). The beetroot was my favorite, followed by the Walchseer spinach and then finally another spinach dumpling in cherry tomato and basil pesto sauce. Rote Beeteknodel Spinachknodel Kashnodel

Yelp
This was recommended by the staff at our hotel in Munich. It was a busy night, but our hotel was able to get us a reservation. They checked our vaccine cards right away so it made me feel safe that they're adhering to COVID protocols. Apparently, Bavaria is the strictest state in Germany. My husband got a nice pint of non-alcoholic beer, and I went with the house wine which was white (I believe it was Sylvaner). Even though Bavarian food is very meat heavy, this vegetarian had several options. I went with the ricotta dumplings which were huge spheres atop sauteed spinach. Hearty and satisfying. My husband got some sort of pork concoction, and he left very happy. This spot is worth checking out if you're in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Wirtshaus in ser Au was my favorite restaurant in Munich. They're one of the few restaurants in Munich that stays open late. They have been serving traditional Bavarian food since 1901. BTW, they serve the best potato dumplings in the area. Their menu is somewhat extensive, but everything looks divine. I ended up getting the Auer Bauernwurstl, a dish consisting of well seasoned sausages with sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, and homemade mustard. It's an incredibly filing dish. I absolutely enjoyed the sausages. My friend ordered the roasted pork, potato dumpling, and bacon coleslaw. I wasn't feeling the coleslaw, but the pork was tender and exquisite. The restaurant prides itself on having the most popular dumpling in town. And I really think they do serve some amazing dumplings. 5 stars. Be sure to check out the live Jazz music.

Yelp
Wirsthaus in der Au was the first restaurant we went to during our stay in Munich. Upon entering the wooden doors, we were greeted with a cavernous, multi-story dining area with chandelier and tavern-esque lights and waiters dressed in Bavarian outfits. Be sure to make reservations! We came in at 5 pm and our hostess said we could have a table as long as we were gone by 7 pm. Bauernschmaus - Definitely the most worth-it order of the night. For 2+ people, this order had a multitude of Bavarian specialties in a large pan-- pork knuckle, slices of roast pork, roasted duck, spicy sausages, steamed potatoes, bread dumplings, gravy, red cabbage, and sauerkraut. Per person was only €19.80! We ordered a 2-person portion for this, and the waiter had to put the tray atop four beer steins. Sauerkraut and red cabbage came in separate bowls and they were in very generous portions. Tölzer Bauerngröstl - Fried chunks of roasted pork, potatoes, bread dumplings, onions, eggs, and coleslaw. This reminded me almost of an American breakfast hash. Between bites, you could taste the bits of pork cracklings along with the savoriness of the egg and onions. Service was faster than most other German restaurants we'd been to. Beers were also great. As usual, water cost extra.

Yelp
Great Bavarian ambience, very nice staff, and huge selection of home brews, wines, and other alcohols. The Bavarian portions are huge and we end up taking home half of our food as leftovers. My only minor complain is the roast duck and pork could use more seasoning and different spices to add more dimensions to the flavors.

Yelp
This was one of my favorite meals on a recent trip to Germany! Cozy interior, fun/buzzy atmosphere, great food and wine -- what more could you want? I'll be thinking about the horseradish/cheese spread combo that came with the soft pretzel for a long time to come. In addition to having an excellent app, everyone absolutely loved their main courses! I enjoyed the shweinebraten with a side of the absolutely decadent & fluffy dumplings (best we had out of several during our week). Reservations recommended, especially if you're coming with a group. You'll be glad you visited!

Yelp
My husband and I ate here on our last evening in Munich. We feel that it was the best traditional Bavarian food that we had on this trip. We ordered a salad entree with pear dressing and warm goat cheese and also the roasted duck with potato dumpling. We shared both entrees. We really enjoyed the food. It was well prepared and properly seasoned. Our server (I believe Karolina) was very friendly and spoke English well. She brought us English menus and answered our questions. The duck was tender, with crispy skin, a flavorful gravy, and filling comfort-food dumpling. We both thoroughly enjoyed the tasty salad of mixed greens. It is difficult to find good fruit or vegetables in German restaurants, and we were both craving them. We loved the flavorful salad with a variety of flavors and textures....fresh greens, crispy bits on top, creamy, tangy dressing. Of the 3 Bavarian restaurants we tried, this was our favorite.

Yelp
First night in Munich. Solid bayerichen food. I had the pork roast with crackling and potato dumpling. Delicious. Portions were probably on the hefty side but after a few beers in you can probably finish it. So good. I would definitely recommend putting in a quick reservation so you don't have to wait. I didn't have one and was placed at a communal table which was totally fine, and the norm at most gasthaus. My table mates were cool. Literally got stuffed with good food and beer for under 25 euro.

Yelp
Great setting with food and beer that feels welcoming. Candles on the table, oak furniture, German fare and staff comfortable with English. Went with 2 of the Christmas specials- parsnip soup and Ox filet. A Kraft Bier of course with sparkling water to keep hydrated all in all a nice meal. I walked in at 3:30 on a Sunday afternoon and was seated easily. An English menu is available. Reservations are a good idea.

Yelp
My family and I were visiting from America and came here as our first meal in Munich. I had seen it had good reviews on TripAdvisor but our experience there made it feel more like a tourist trap. The waiters are pretty aggressive with getting you to order drinks. We didn't plan on getting any and we had been out all day sightseeing and had our water bottles with us from that. The waiter was really aggressive and said "you can't bring water from outside it doesn't work like that" when that wasn't what we had intended to do. Another thing we weren't a fan of was that the waiter just dropped a basket of pretzels on our table with no comment. We assumed it was complimentary like how they have bread in america but when we got our bill it showed up. We think he might have mixed up our table with another that had actually ordered it. Pretzels were super dry and not tasty at all. Our meal itself was alright - very heavy, large portions. The potato dumplings my mom got tasted super starchy and weird. But the pork was pretty good.

Chris C.

Yelp
Walked in without a reservation and even though they were packed the manager found me a seat immediately at the bar. Himself and the bartender were very friendly and gave great service. I got the bacon dumpling starter which was fantastic (true to German origin), the pretzel with two cheeses which were fantastic (recommend combining them), and the ravioli which was immaculate. Good vibes, great food, incredible beer, couldn't ask for a better experience.

Yelp
Great place to grab dinner! This area is really nice. The weather was perfect so we opted to sit outside. We got the original dumplings and fried pork. Both were very good but both were a bit salty (which is why I'm knocking this down to 4 stars). Overall, I would still recommend this place and we will come back.

Yelp
Enjoyed a wonderful evening dining outdoors after an afternoon at the museum. Wait staff was friendly and attentive. I requested a menu in English and was promptly accommodated. Schnitzel and a bier was the fare for the meal. Food was very good and overall I would recommend this place for anyone in the area

Yelp
Our last dinner in Munich, and it was absolutely wonderful. Our waiter was a young man by the name of Emanuel. Excellent service, excellent food, and great ambience. This restaurant is comfortable and cozy. It's not in a tourist area, you'll eat well with locals. Thank you all so much for a memorable evening.

Yelp
Bustling, tasty, and very friendly - a fantastic traditional Bavarian meal! A reservation is highly encouraged, we were especially lucky to be accommodated w/o one, but you'll be sorry to miss this meal if they're full.

Yelp
Post oktoberfest dinner. My friend researched this place as some place to try for the dumplings. I have officially discovered that i really don't like german dumplings. But the presentation and sauces were delightful. We had a reservation for 6, that we upped to 8 when 2 german friends hopped in. Luckily they spoke german and could ease the path to get us in without a problem! The most amazing part - the dessert tray. OMG. Comes with so many things. Even with 8 people and only ordering for 3 it was nearly too much! Lovely atmosphere, good beer selection. It's a bit off the beat and path, but assuming you have walked all over munich during your trip, this is just a smidge more!

Ray S.

Yelp
We went twice during our stay and tried to get a table. The first time they were reasonably crowded and the manager told us they were short staffed and could not accommodate us. We returned two days later at an earlier time and 70% of the tables were free. This time we were told we could not be accommodated without a reservation. My wife is of Chinese decent and I definitely got a vibe that we would not be welcome under any circumstances. Their website also has no link to make a reservation. Avoid the walk. I also saw a similar review that supports my suspicion.

Yelp
Best. Dumplings. Ever. And the service was lovely as well. My boyfriend tells me that the house beer was terrific.

Yelp
Now that I have eaten in the restaurant I believe it is time to update my review. The only reason I have given it 3 stars and not 4 is because of the service today. It was slow, almost non existent and the orders came out one by one and, I think the waitress forgot my order so by the time my meal came out the others were almost finished. Ok, it was a really busy day but I have never experienced this anywhere else in Munich even on such busy days. Food here is first class and, that deserves 4 stars. The meat was cooked to perfection, the gravy was very flavourful and delicious and, the knodle was exceptionally good. The meal I chose was on the daily specials board and, I wish, the waitress had told me how big it was :-( I ended up wasting food which, I dislike doing and, could have shared it with someone else. Let's hope this lapse in service is temporary and that the next time I go there it won't be such a bad experience. It took the waitress about 20 mins to get our order and it arrived one after another.

Yelp
Short and sweet...last time I dined here was in 2000. Nothing has changed. Why mess with perfection. This is not a tourist joint. This is authentic Munchen.

Yelp
Love love love. Came here about 1.5 years ago with an ex and his friends. This time, back in München on vacation, I wanted to go back (sans ex, obviously) because I remembered the food and atmosphere were both great. Walked in without a reservation on a Wednesday evening, and even then, only bar seating was available. (So make sure you make reservations!) The staff is dressed in traditional garb--lederhosen for the men and dirndls for the women. The bartender who took my order was super friendly and more than game to speak German with me the entire time so I could practice--until I gave up trying to figure out how to say "Do you sell these as souvenirs" in German due to food coma. The food was fantastic. I ordered the Hofente und Semmelknödel (duck and dumpling, basically), and it came out fast. It was amazing. I couldn't finish the gigantic dumpling because I wanted to save room for the Kaiserschmarnn, which was also amazing. I also had a beer. This meant that after my meal, instead of taking the S-Bahn back to my accommodations as planned, I walked halfway to work off some of the food coma. One of my absolute favorite restaurants in Germany. I highly recommend--and remember, don't forget to make reservations!

Yelp
While on vacation in Munich, my husband found the Wirsthaus in der Au on Yelp and wanted to try it (based on the reviews). It was only about a 5 minute walk for us, and I'm SO glad we tried it! We knew from the reviews that they are often very busy (hotspot for locals!) and reservations may be needed. That said, it was around 1:30-2 pm on a Saturday, and we decided to just take a chance without reservations. We were very fortunate to walk up and immediately be told we could choose any of the open outside table options. They had several tables and about 50% were open/available. Yes! Our server was very kind and upbeat, and upon hearing us speak (clearly Americans), he offered us a menu in English. This is notable as the menus that are waiting at the table are entirely in German. I know very little German (husband knows more). However, from the Yelp reviews that led us to try the place, I knew I wanted the portion of duck, and the hubs knew he wanted their dumplings trio and their pretzel soup! So, in truth, we didn't worry about the menu much. Now, for the really important part - the FOOD. It was, simply put, amazing!! All of it! Even my vegetarian husband tried the duck and liked it! It was tender, juicy, and had a lot of meat on the bone. The red cabbage, potato dumpling, and gravy were great too! His dumplings were so well seasoned with herbs and spices and paired with cheese sauce, tomato sauce, and/or vegetables (tomatoes, white asparagus, spinach, etc). We both loved all 3! His pretzel soup? It was also SO well seasoned and a total win! All plates were pretty much "licked clean" - truly, it was tempting to lick the plates but we did not really do it as we didn't want to get any extra stares! In all, we've actually talked about going back tomorrow because it was THAT GOOD. I'd like to try their pork knuckle! Only thing that could be a hiccup for some is that it is a tiny bit pricey if you're on a budget - about 50€ for both entrees, the soup, two beers, and a coca cola before any tip). To us, it seemed reasonable for the portions and quality. So, it was 100% worth it!!!

Yelp
Wirsthaus in der Au was probably my favorite dining experience of the 10 counties I have been to thus far. It is mostly locals. One even asked me how I knew about this place (in a friendly manner). I was able to get a reservation by sending a yelp message to the restaurant. Our waiter spoke great English and was the friendliest in Germany. I ordered the Bauernschmaus and it was awesome all around. BTW if its someones birthday I highly recommend you probably have to pay for it, but they bring out this crazy plate of desserts with sparklers.

Yelp
We came for a friendly get together with about 15-20 people, which they nicely accommodated. The menu is very large, amd the most unique drinks that caught my eye were the flavored schnapps. The pear went down smooth. Their specialty seems to be dumplings, so we shared a few. They are large, thick, and potato based, which gives them a pleasant chewiness that binds the ingredients nicely. My top recommendation is the spinach and cheese dumpling, served over a tomato sauce. They also have one of the best side salads I have ever had, and I'm not even a salad lover. If you want to get away from the touristy city center, this is a nice spot.

Yelp
I'm not an expert in Bavarian food but this is just plain good food! While on a business trip to Munich, I came here twice because I wanted to try both the pork knuckle and the duck. Both dishes were deliciously juicy with healthy portion sizes. If I had to choose one of the dishes, I would pick the duck again as its not easy to find a juicy duck with a crispy skin.
google avatar

Brian R.

Yelp
The burschen-reindel (Bavarian duck and roasted pork) was delicious, super flavorful, and filling. The duck and pork were tender, the cabbage packed a nice punch, and the potato and bread dumplings, though simple, were rich and wonderful. Atmosphere screams "legit Bavarian."
google avatar

Minami S.

Yelp
The restaurant is absolutely great! Especially platters are awesome! I had a big platter(2 big potato dumplings and 3 kind of meat) for dinner. I was surprised when a waitress brought the platter because the potato dumplings were soooo huge I laughed in spite of myself I definitely come back here when I come to Munich again!

Yelp
A Bavarian restaurant visited by many tourists as well as by locals. This place can get quite packed on weekends, so it is best to reserve beforehand. However, we were often lucky and were able to find a place to sit, usually at the bigger communal table sharing the space with others. Service is friendly and quite fast. Food-wise, it gets my stamp of approval. I'm a "Knödelfan" (Knödel = boiled dumplings), so I was delighted to try their Knödeltrio, which all 3 dumplings were different from the usual Semmelknödel (bread-based) or Kartoffelknödel (potato-based) yet delectable. We also tried their special "Hofente" (Bavarian duck), which is nicely cooked. The salads are fresh but sometimes doused in salad dressings. For those dessert-lovers who like chocolate and/or crunchy texture, I can highly recommend their Schokoladenbatz (Homemade chocolate mousse served in an almond waffle and vanilla pears). Unfortunately, good things in Munich often come with a high price, so be prepared to splurge a bit.

Yelp
My wife and I stopped by to eat lunch here in late June based on Yelp reviews and the desire to have some traditional Bavarian dishes. We got there around 2 p.m. on a Saturday and there was plenty of outside seating, so we sat there. Service was prompt and friendly. Reviewers said that it gets busy in the evenings and tables need to be reserved (part of the reason for going early) and that's true because the servers were placing reserved signs on a few during our meal. Their menu is quite large (if you include their drinks also) and has a lot of pork & duck dishes as well as beef, fish, and dumplings. They have an English menu if you request one but they have one online in English also, which we'd looked at prior to arriving. To start, my wife & I shared a pretzel, onion, marjoram, beer soup which was very good. Think French onion flavor. Our entrees were quite substantial in portions and satisfaction. My wife ordered the portion of roasted duck that came with a healthy side of apple and red cabbage kraut and a potato dumpling that was the size of a softball with a hearty gravy! It was all super delicious and filling! Definitely rib - sticking soul food! I don't eat meat but I tried the duck and it was super moist and tender on the inside, slightly crisp skin on the outside. I've never had a potato dumpling but it resembles lumpy heavily buttered mashed potatoes in a large ball that's slightly springy in texture, as dough is part of the mixture. The gravy is for dipping the awesomeness on your plate! I really enjoyed the kraut, which had a very strong apple flavor to it and came with a wedge of what tasted like golden delicious apple. My wife hates Sauerkraut but enjoyed the flavor of this one! I ordered their Knödeltrio plate which had three different dumplings: a spinach dumpling in a tomato pasta sauce, a cheese dumpling with a light cream sauce over fresh sautéed spinach w/a bit of olive oil, and a ramson (wild garlic leaf) dumpling in a creamy tomato sauce with well cooked white asparagus (a Bavarian favorite). These were all really really good and the ramson dumpling was the bomb.com! Seriously good food! When combined with a bottle of their home-brewed dunkel and a ,5 L of Paulaner heffeweißen, this was one of the most satisfying meals we've had!

Yelp
Incredibly wonderful environment, service, and food! They graciously provide menus in English. I had the swinebraten which was flavorful and tender, and served with a bit of crisp skin which was like the most exquisite bit of bacon. The potato dumpling was great and the sauerkraut was quite incredible with a wonderful flavor profile. My wife had the pork schnitzel, which was also flavorful and tender. The potato salad that accompanied the schnitzel was one of the best things I've eaten yet on our trip to Munich. Simple but perfectly done. Dinner was, of course, enjoyed with a bier. The restaurant's own Kraft Bier, which is a bit nutty but wonderfully smooth. Prost!

Yelp
Used Yelp to help find somewhere for my first night in Munich. Was seated on the outside patio and stayed only there - so I can't comment on the inside or the atmosphere. It was quiet and steadily got busier and busier on thine Friday early evening. It was clear to see this was a neighborhood and city favorite. Our server (and the rest) were in festive German attire and gave me a seat right in front of the fountain. The menu was in German and like other Yelpers suggested I asked for an English menu. "No English. Sorry." Was pretty irritated by that not because I literally had no idea what I was reading and asking him to translate items only made it worse. So I ended up ordering a Bavarian platter with my friend and it was huge: Duck Pork knuckle (I think) Rice dumpling Potato dumpling Red cabbage Sauerkraut Sausage and some other stuff. Along with the beers- this made for a fine meal and an enjoyable experience. Would return.

Yelp
An extremely authentic Bavarian meal in an authentic atmosphere. Service is great and comes in Drindl or Lederhos When I came here we were seated under a chandelier that had hops and other trinkets that made it look pretty very Bavarian. I got the dumpling trio and really enjoyed them. Each one had its own flavor plays. The dumpling themselves also had different consistency's based on what was inside and the sauces were made to compliment flavors in the dumplings. Next time I come here I am getting the meat platter it looked delicious.

Yelp
Took a bus from Marienplatz / Glockenspiel to here.. This place is another beer hall / restaurant situated near Museum Island. It wasn't that busy when we got there but they were pretty much booked up. They fit us in for 90 minutes - plenty of time! We couldn't choose what to have for dinner so the waiter suggested a Bavarian platter to try a bit of everything. OMG this thing was huge and a meat lover's dream! Food included duck, pork, sausage, fried pork, potato dumplings, bread dumplings , sauerkraut and red cabbage. There wasn't much left by the time we were done (maybe half a potato dumpling!) but left room for dessert. I chose strawberry & pistachio sweet dumplings and they had apple pancakes. Utterly stodgy and bloody delicious.

Yelp
This is AUTHENTIC Bavarian food in an AUTHENTIC Bavarian atmosphere! All I can say is WOW! Located within walking distance of the Deutsches Museum. Take the Isator exit off the S-Bahn. Authentic Bavarian menu that is very reasonably priced. Very friendly service. Staff spoke English and they also have menus available in English. This is truly a neighborhood restaurant, done up in the Bavarian decor you would expect. My favorite restaurant in Munich!

Yelp
By far the best restaurant in Munich. Traditional dishes, quality service, and fantastic beer. Been coming to this spot for years and have never been disappointed. Be sure to make a reservation as the place does get quite busy. Prost!

Yelp
When you're done singing "En Prosit" at Hofbrauhaus with 10,000 fellow tourists and want something more low key, make the trip to Wisthaus in der Au. It's a great "less touristy" beer hall serving traditional food with a few updates in a trendy neighborhood just across the river. We were lucky to be staying close and really enjoyed our dinner here. First, the place gets PACKED with locals so go early (before 7) or make a reservation. Apparently there are English menus but they won't be delivered automatically as this is more of a locals place. We were fine with German menus and had very good service overall. The food is definitely a cut above what is served at most beer halls. Hubs had schweinehaxe and I had one of the best schnitzels ever - there was a touch of mustard in the breaking which was delicious. Wirsthaus in der Au is well known for dumplings with several varieties on offer - so much better than the dense doughy balls one usually gets. In warm weather, there are lots of tables outside to soak up the sun. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Eat the suckling pig pork knuckle (schweinshaxe)! It is very tender and succulent and the perfect size for one (about 4-6 oz of meat give or take.) I was afraid I was going to get a dry, eraserlike chunk of meat with chewy inedible skin and no flavor but the flavor was throughout and the meat easily cuts. Skin was excellent- not bubbly but crispy and thin with the right amount of salt. I could have definitely done without the bacon dumplings (too dense and doughy and the bacon flavor is that nasty chewy smoky bacon akin to dog treats.) The brown gravy was too salty and one dimensional- I had another similar pork dish a day later with the same gravy perfectly executed (thinner, richer, nut not salty!) I also had a side of kartoffelsalat and I honestly had better at the airport- it was just a tad too sloppy for my taste and once again rather salty. My server was very pleasant and friendly and service was quick too- unfortunately, it was not the same when I called in (I got hung up on because he couldn't hear me after 5 seconds, wow. lol.) Thankfully I was able to manage a table with a walk in despite what happened over the phone. Tldr: try the pork knuckle. Sides are forgettable.

Yelp
We had a fantastic meal here. I'm now in love with bacon bread dumplings. Service was attentive enough and the atmosphere and decor are so warm and beautiful, especially decorated for Christmas. English menus available, very well priced.
