A Weekend Getaway Guide to Anderson Valley, California - AFAR

"A cozy tasting space where winemaker Van Williamson farms and bottles his own pinot noir and zinfandel while also sourcing fruit from local vineyards to produce a citrusy chardonnay and the popular 2012 Valenti Vineyard Syrah, a balanced wine with summer herb and berry notes." - Brooke Vaughan

Google
The winemaker served us 5 wines for $25. He gave us fresh popcorn to go with our wines. There were 3 Pinot Noir wines, all good plus a decent Zinfandel. Usually make notes but there wasn't a list provided. A bit pricey. Overall there was a good atmosphere, but would like to see more incentive to sell us a bottle or 2!

Google
My favorite of the five or six tasting rooms I've been to in Anderson Valley. One great thing about it is that though it has the solid Pinot Noirs you'd expect from the area, it also has other wines like Zinfandel. The 2013 Zinfandel was actually my favorite, and one of the best Zins I've had—bold, with almost port-like characteristics

Google
I love the casual and friendly ambience of Witching Stick Wines tasting room, where we got to taste deliciously interesting wines. My favorites are Pinot Noir and Zinfandel, although I love them all! So happy I joined the wine club.

Google
Fantastic winery. Tried several harvests of a good pinot noir, plus a great zinfandel rosé, an interesting chardonne and an amazing house sweet wine. Fab staff. One of the best experiences on the west coast in North America

Google
best pinot noir, hard to pick a favourite! syrah was also tasting the day we popped in and we should have bought it as well. don't miss the anderson valley and witching stick if you're visiting the region

Google
Have visited Van and his place 3 times and every time LOVE the wines. A great tasting experience as well since the owner (Van) is there to take you through his wines.

Google
Some of the best pinots in the Anderson Valley and some of the nicest people to get good info on local wines. You've gotta stop here for a taste, you won't regret it!

Google
I love this place, don’t let outside of their tasting room fool you, it’s not big or fancy like many Wineries, but their wines are the best in the Valley and there are a lot of good ones in the area, this is a must a stop for us every time we are in the area, it should be at the top of your list too.

Yelp
Some of the best Pinots I have ever had and Van always makes tasting fun, he is ne of a kind and I mean that in the best possible way.

Yelp
Surprisingly good wines like Pinots and rose zins. Bought two bottles of their $59 Pinots as they were good. The owner is a crusty looking but very knowledgeable and nice guy who gave us fresh popcorn to share. Dog friendly place but ambience is messy.

Yelp
$25 tasting fee, not applied toward purchase. Worth it! No fancy vineyards with views to sit at, this stop is all about the wine folks... OMG - everything we tasted here (three different Pinot Noirs, one Chardonnay, one Zinfandel) was truly exceptional! We obviously needed to join the wine club to further enjoy all Witching Stick has to offer. Such a great find in a gorgeous area of Anderson Valley...so very happy we stopped by.

Yelp
Don't miss this place if you are in the area. No fancy tasting room, four of us settled in on the front porch with Van (with wine maker) and his dogs and had a tremendous time sampling his favorite wines. When he learned we were Zin lovers, he searched out a great "old style" fruit forward gem that blew our socks off. This is a place to savor.

Yelp
He had crazy good wines from a crazy good wine maker. Van, I believe his name is it's quite the character and the winds are some of the best I've ever tasted from the region. The tasting room really isn't all that, but the complementary popcorn is a nice touch, if you're ever in the area, please don't skip this area because you'll be robbing yourself of some spectacular wines.

Yelp
We stopped by the tasting room. It's a small red building and doesn't look like much from the outside. We went in and met the owner, Van. Van proceeded to pour us 7 wines starting with a Chardonnay and working up a really nice Zinfandel. It was a Fashauer Vineyard Zinfandel. It was fantastic! We left with 3 bottles before heading up to the town to Mendocino. Highly recommend stopping by for a tasting. You won't be dissapointed!

Yelp
As a regular of Willie's Wine bar, I was devastated when they suddenly ran out of my favorite local zin. Initially devastated. The waiter suggested this 2013 Fashauer Zinfandel. Omg! Liquid heaven in my mouth! Down side is they don't retail in Sonoma County. Upside - road trip to Mendocino county! Van started us off with a taste of the rosato - rise of Zinfandel. That will be great on hot summer day. Next, about 6 different pinot noirs. What a treat to taste the different appellations, elevations, and proximity to the ocean, side by side. And the port is not to be missed. But this is my new favorite boutique Zinfandel and I had to stick up before it's gone. Don't miss this winery! cheers.

Yelp
Great wine tasting venue from the private winery. I told him my wife likes super sweet wines. Bought two bottles and my wife loves it.

Yelp
I am a witch and I do love witching stick because my broom is not here? So I need another bottle of Pinot Noir? 2012!

Yelp
We loved the wine here during our weekend tasting trip over Memorial Day. Prices were a little above our threshold, but the quality was solid. Right in Philo, stop at the store for a deli sandwich next door, and you're ready for some tasting at Witching Stick without moving your car. We tasted here at the end of May 2021; not sure why this is listed as closed, it was definitely open 2 weeks ago.

Yelp
This place was the best as was the owner who practically gave us a couple of wine barrels for next to nothing. Super nice guy. We sure hope that it isn't closed as it is on our bucket list to go back! The wine is great also the atmosphere in this simple little wine tasting room. Definitely a 10 fir this one

Yelp
A great place to stop just to chat with Van - so knowledgeable and sweet. A hard working guy!! Wines are delicious and a dog friendly place!

Yelp
Some of the best wines in California are hidden in Philo, Mendocino. If you stop only one place, let it be here! Wines are mostly single vineyard, are naturally made, and age beautifully. Van is not a salesman by nature :) his wines need no introduction as they are exquisite. If you (like me) are willing to ask him the dumb questions though, he will open up his world to you!! Buy more than you think you need because it will disappear quickly from your cellar.

Yelp
Wow wow wow! We ordered a bottle of the 2106 Zin for lunch at Stark's and it was delicious! It was soooo good we bought six bottles the next day. Thank you, Van and Anne, for making such a wonderful wine!

Kris R.

Yelp
One of the best wine makers in the valley. Don't miss this spot when wine tasting in Anderson' Valley! Only open in the afternoon Thurs-Mon

Yelp
I'm head over heels about the 2013 Zinfandel that Van sells. I first found it at Willies Wine Bar in Santa Rosa and had to find the winery. Van is a cool guy and all of his wine is amazing. I've bought a lot of wine and will continue to do so. Everyone needs to check it out.
