This was our first time visiting and skiing Wolf Creek, and we had a great experience. We’ve skied other areas in Colorado (including Breckenridge and Steamboat), so we had good comparisons, and Wolf Creek absolutely held its own.
The drive from Pagosa Springs was very easy, and we arrived around 7:45 each morning with no issues parking. We rented skis and purchased lift tickets online in advance, which I highly recommend, though our nephews didn’t and still had an easy time getting fitted and set up.
We skied December 30 and January 1–2, which is considered peak time. I kept hearing how crowded it would be, but honestly, it felt no worse than any other resort we’ve visited. Lift lines were manageable, we always found seating in the lodge for lunch, and there were plenty of cubbies for boot storage.
The snow was incredible. It dumped on us on day three and made for fantastic runs.
Our 8-year-old took private lessons with Alex, and by lessons 3 and 4 he was confidently skiing greens unassisted, even though it had been almost three years since he last skied. The kids’ ski school also looked great, and friends of ours had positive experiences. Since this was our son’s fourth time skiing, we opted for private lessons, which were very reasonably priced.
There was one incident where our son was taken out by an adult who clearly didn’t know how to ski, but the mountain staff handled it extremely well. Overall, people on the mountain were cautious and courteous, and Wolf Creek felt very family- and kid-friendly.
Lunch starts at 11:00, if you want to avoid lines, get there around 10:30 or wait for a later lunch. Even during peak season lines moved quickly.
We’re already planning to come back in March and can’t wait!
