I love wolves, so my boyfriend and I planned my birthday weekend around coming to this nature center. I saw on their Facebook page that they'd be introducing their two wolf pups, Cypress and Tauriel, on Sunday the 23rd, so obviously that's when we decided to go.
It was everything I hoped it would be and more. The only problem I had was that it was a hot day, which exacerbates my disability. I was exhausted halfway through and stumbled around the rest of the way. I now know I should've brought my wheelchair. And yet...I still had a wonderful time.
When we first walked in, there were wolves right at the first enclosure by the fence. They were absolutely gorgeous. I couldn't stop looking until I was dragged away. And so it was at every enclosure...
The volunteers and staff were all so informative and friendly. I learned a ton from them. By the time I managed to get to the pups, there were a bunch of staff members filling a giant bucket full of water for them to play in. Again, hot day. Speaking of the pups, they were adorable! Absolutely worth the long drive from Buffalo to see them. I laughed watching them cavort in their bucket and wipe their mouths on the ground afterwards. A staff member was inside the fence area with them, giving us background information on the little cuties and watching them merrily bounce around.
And then it was feeding time. Right next to the pups were the Artic foxes, who were also adorable as they scampered around. A few wolves down the hill were receiving whole, raw chickens, which made the foxes lose their little minds. It was so cute. One of the volunteers was asked if she was ever afraid of their prey instinct, to which she immediately replied "No." This is because the animals at Wolf Mountain are all socialized and are used to humans from an early age.
The walk back to the car was hard. My boyfriend bought me some bottled water on the way, which I was glad they had. Then, something that I'll never forget happened. As we reached the exit, my boyfriend asked one of the volunteers if he could pull his car around to pick me up because of my health. The volunteer kindly acquiesced to this and even let me sit in her chair. I was beyond grateful. The volunteers all chit chatted with me as we were waiting for my boyfriend to arrive and wished me a happy birthday. Their kind words and helpfulness were appreciated. Thank you, Wolf Mountain, for a day I'll always remember!
