Location: 5 stars. Lovely views of the lake, easy walking distance to downtown (five minutes at most), right on Main Street yet quiet, convenient to both the North Country and high end skiing (one hour to Conway), and in the heart of the lakes area for summer and fall activities.
Accommodations: 4.5 stars. A pleasant overall mix of modern and antique charm with a wide variety of rooms and suites to choose from. Most rooms are recently remodeled. The least expensive are a little small, but pleasantly appointed, quiet, with adequate bathroom area but with noticeable lack of shelf or storage space, comfortable beds (the ones we tried), hotter than h*** in the winter but at least the heat is on and manageable. Prices are moderate to above average for inns.
Customer service: 2 stars. I should explain that my wife and I are friendly people - just customers overnighting at a hotel. We are not dentists. But if you are staying here it will help if you have your DDS. One should NEVER have to pull teeth with a front desk person about ANYTHING at a hotel, whether it's a pillow request, a wake up call, directions to a local eatery, the source of your reservation, etc. Our experience, spread among the several families in our large party, with front desk staff in both the evenings and mornings was unpleasant. They are impolite, surly, abrupt, unhelpful, argumentative, and stand-offish. Pray that you do not need to engage these people for any chore, request, or resolution of a problem, as your stay will quickly turn sulfurous. They are a churlish lot in need of re-training.
Our overall rating: 3 stars. Once the front desk staff are fired and replaced by new, well trained help we'll happily stick another star on to this charming place.
