Nestled along the coastline, the campground offers stunning ocean views, peaceful wooded sites, and easy access to hiking and biking trails. The farm on-site adds a unique charm, with opportunities to visit animals and learn about sustainable agriculture. This is a unique camping experience- no frills camping at a farm/ education center. We loved it. We had a spacious grassy spot in the West Bay. It was very quiet at night. There were lots of well marked trails, and the nearby State Park has additional trails. The campground is exceptionally dog-friendly, with water stations and dog bowls and dog waste stations everywhere. From our camp site, we could see out into the bay and hear the birds, see the fishing bosts, and watch seals and bald eagles trying to snatch some fish. Bathrooms were clean and showers were hot. Rules support the mission and the experience. If you are not up for dirt roads, slow driving, no WiFi and very limited generator use, this is not the place for you.

We got there in the evening. We called beforehand and nobody answered, but there was a message saying that they were open from 8AM to 8PM. We got there at 7PM and nobody was there. At the check-in tent, there wasn’t anyone but it said that if we got there after hours and didn’t have a reservation, we could reserve online for the night, which we did. We ended up staying the night on a tent campground with no services. It was spacious and away from the wind. Only inconvenient was the massive rock in the entrance of our campground which made us unable to access the campground by car (we didn’t have a pickup truck of a suv so i guess i we had this type or car, it would’ve been fine). We were able to park just before the entrance and everything was fine. It was a good stay even though we didn’t have any service or interaction with employees.

Came here on a family vacation & stayed for 7 nights. We stayed on the waterfront sites which were nice & had a cool breeze for July! The sites were a decent size, not huge. We have a sprinter van and found a nice level spot to park. The camp store is cute and Freeport is 20 minutes away. Bathrooms were up to par with a campground and were cleaned several times a day.

Amazing! The grounds are gorgeous and our site was very private. The staff is so nice, and the store is full of really nice produce and stuff from the farm and surrounding local companies. Definitely recommend!! A really quiet and relaxing stay

We recently stayed at the campground in a tent at one of the ocean view sites. We normally camp at State Parks as we like the amenities and privacy that usually comes with being in the woods. We chose Wolfe's Neck as we have young children and loved the novelty of staying on a farm is fun, as well as being so close to the beach. Pros -Beautiful clean beach, especially fun to explore at low tide. -The activities at the farm were fun. -Cute farm shop. -Extremely dog friendly. Cons -Sites are extremely small and exposed, no privacy at all. It felt like we were on top of each other. -Toilet facilities need an upgrade, our spot had a porta pottie or a wooden shack. The shack had no lights in after dark which could be an issue for small kids, also no sinks to wash hands, just hand sanitizer. -The sites are very close to the road. Beautiful location and a fun novelty to be on a farm, but I expected more for the price we paid. We will stick to state park campgrounds from now on.

My kids' favorite campground. My 19 year old wanted to come here for her birthday/ graduation gift. We stayed here 5 years ago for 3 nights and she wanted to spend a week here this time. I booked the week for our same water front spot on opening reservation day for the week. There is water spigots near by, flush primitive toilets. Then you can drive/bike to free showers. There is limited cell service, but free wifi by the office/ showers. Lots of activities on premises if you want, and lots of activities nearby. We used the campsite as a basecamp for the week to do adventures from Portland to Boothbay Harbor. The kids were not bored spending a week here. There is lots of nearby places to buy firewood. Campsite 318, in case anyone wants to know.

Beautiful campground! There is a lot of space in the park with varying views. The ocean view spots are the ones to get.

Yelp
We got lucky and we were able to get a campsite in the West bay campground. What a lovely place. Wifi not so great but that is to be expected. The laundry, showers, and flush toilets are up at the campground office and farm store. The campgrounds have pit toilets in the out houses. Very nice place

Yelp
We only stay one night but this campground will go on our list as returning customers. First and foremost this campground is all about the farm and location! We stayed at lot 806 and the views were amazing. I will say, we stayed out of season in Mid October so we had a lot of spots to choose from. Booking was super easy and the check in process very simple. Property was beautiful, bathrooms and shower very clean. The bathhouse was alittle cold in the morning but the windows were open, the door was as well and adding that it was 35 degrees through the night so can't judge them on that. Thank you again for an easy and wonderful stay. We will be back next fall.

Yelp
Nice Campground, Ocean Views, Showers Too! We paid $36 a night to camp in our tent. This campground actually gives you things for the value so it's a great family spot! It's maybe 1 mile from Wolfe's Neck State Park. This is part of an agricultural education center of some sort, so there are some cows and crops around. There is a gift shop tent and a little cafe over by the working farm part of the facility if you are looking for it. Clean and well maintained campground for sure, bathrooms could use a tad more attention, but a great value as it is. They have kayaks on the beach for you to use at no cost, which is super cool. Even 2 person ocean kayaks! Life jackets and paddles are at the shed by the playground. The playground is being used all the time and kids seem to like it. Our little guy isn't quite big enough for it yet, no little baby swings, only big kid swings. Hot showers are included so you won't need quarters like some parks which is more convenient for sure!

Yelp
This is an interesting campground. I've never stayed at a campground with such a variety of sites from tiny to huge, very private to completely open. We stayed in East bay where there's a road with a mix of sites and then a field encircled by E/W sites. Those sites have very little privacy. We were at site 131 which was better than I expected it to be. It's a deep skinny site. The outhouses are a bit farther apart than I'm used to. There's a working farm on the property.

Phoebe L.

Yelp
You have to go at least once. It is agri-tainment to the max. They try hard, maybe too hard. Many nice people and great mud views twice a day. Why aren't they selling grass fed milk from these cows? Farm manager name is DeGrandPre so it's hard to criticize. Wicked Easy Camping is like what happened to burning man But everyone is super nice. I'm not into these Outlet Armageddons like Freeport. I'd rather camp at the State Park inland.

Yelp
First time at a campsite in over 20 years. We went off to an event at the Mallett Barn and decided to spend the night and enjoy the gorgeous fall weekend. It did not disappoint! We stayed on site 309, which was a spacious, private lot evenly spaced between two restrooms and a short walk to the waterfront. We were up early and enjoyed fresh apple donuts, grilled blueberry muffins, and coffee at the camp store. Delicious! Before heading home we made our way to the State Park for a hike along the shore. It was spectacular. So many loops, child and pet friendly.

Yelp
We just stayed at Wolfe's Neck for several nights (Sunday-Thurs) in July 2023. Had a great time. We have stayed near the campground many times renting houses, so we were very familiar with the area. This was our first time camping there. It was so quiet, I could not believe it. We were in the middle bay area, site 327. There were tons of people. I'm not sure if there were any empty campsites, and yet it was very quiet. It was quiet during the day and at night, but at 10pm when the quiet hours started, you could hear a pin drop. I was pleasantly surprised, because I have been in noisy campgrounds before. The showers had plenty of hot water and good water pressure. We never had to wait for a shower, even thought I think the campground was fully booked. They have nice dishwashing sinks convenient to the campsites. It is a quick drive to Freeport for anything you might need. We did not cook at the campsite much, because we enjoy a lot of the local restaurants and it is a quick ride to town. We rented kayaks and canoes from Wolfe's neck a couple of times during the visit. It's fun to kayak around at high tide and there were good places to jump in the water. We knew of lots of activities to do in the area, so our campsite was mostly just for having a fire and sleeping at night. We did not spend the days there. But, every time we stopped by during the day, it was very quiet. Our campsite was a good size and flat. Some sun during the day, but it was tucked in the trees, which was nice. I would book the same campsite again. There was a spot just the right size for our 6 person tent that drained well. I would highly recommend this campground.

S M.

Yelp
We had such a great time! The campground is so clean. I have never seen (or smelled) such clean bathrooms at a campground. We stayed in the quiet cove area (site 652) the caretaker and his dog are very friendly.

Yelp
Scenic, quiet, Maine. No fluff just a wonderful camping experience. Some waterfront, mostly tents. Some electric and water. Dump station if you need. Easy in and out. Great walking, kayaking, bicycling. great for family, solo,or elderly. Some areas great for groups.

Christina D.

Yelp
We picked this campground last minute driving through the coast of Maine. Driving through the town of Freeport we stopped at a thrift store and walked through the outlets which was also quite fun. But when we got to this campground we were pleasantly surprised. Not only is this a campground, but also a center for agriculture and environment. Gardens, dairy farm, and beautiful ocean views made this place very special. They have tent camping, cabins and water and electric hook ups. Unfortunately the café which serves food from local farms and the farm it's self was not open, but the beauty of this place made it extremely special. Hiking, biking, relaxing, swimming and kayaking are all available here. They even have goat hiking where you can go through the natural trails guided by a goat.

Yelp
Stayed here last April, it was still so chilly at night that I was the only one that camped there then. It was so good though because I did solo-camping. The only sound I could hear was the one of nature such as wind, tide and animals. I spent about a week alone without hot water, but it was really a good experience. I wish I came back again in near future.

Yelp
We stayed in the cabins at Recompence Campground and had a great experience! The staff were very friendly, helpful and considerate. The cabins were awesome! Now, I am a camper/outside type, so they seemed pretty lush to me. I even through around "glamping" while we were there. We rented two cabins, Point Senior and Cove, they share a little parking area and are tucked away from the other camping areas, right on the water! Cove has the BEST view of the ocean, both have the same layout/interior. The beds are very nice, with seemingly new mattresses. The bottom room has a double bed and a set of bunk beds (twin). There is also a loft with two more twin beds. The kitchen has the basics and a sink with running water. Nice living area with a table for eating, a couch and a couple chairs. No bathroom inside, but there is an outhouse close-by that was decent (I mean, it's an outhouse, don't expect beautiful, but it was fine). The campground was quiet and lovely at night! We grilled and had a fire, and then slept soundly in the comfy beds. It is a family campground so they strictly enforce quiet hours from 10pm-8am. They have a little store at the front of the campground, this is also where you can rent kayaks or canoes. The Snack Shack offers you average american flare, and of course lobster rolls! The lobster roll I had was $11.99 and well worth it! Overflowing with fresh lobster meat, lightly mayo-ed. I would go back just for the roll & the views! Awesome things: - Clean, well-maintained cabins - Cabins are large, can easily accomodate 6-8 people - AMAZING views - You can tour Wolfe's Neck Farm and see the cute animals (a must!) - Very close to Freeport downtown - Easy kayak launch, and great views on the water! - Snack Shack has cheap and good food options I really don't have anything negative to say. I just wouldn't come here if you're planing to rage or have a big party. There were 12 in our group (2 cabins) and we made sure to stay quiet and had no issues.

Yelp
Despite the rain through our whole stay here, it was enjoyable! Nice campsites, showers were clean!!

Yelp
My family and I have been coming here for many years. It's close to Portland, yet far enough away to feel like you're camping. Here are some of the reasons this place is awesome: You get a great view of the stars at night Lots of sites are right on the ocean They've got things to do for adults and children They have all the amenities one could want like hot showers and a camp store Quiet hours are enforced The employees are friendly and helpful If car-camping is your thing, this is a great place. If you're really into roughing it, this place will be like a 5 star hotel.

Yelp
Wonderful campground on a working farm right on the Atlantic shore. Wish we could have stuck around longer, but we were just looking for a spot to camp for the night on our way down the east coast. They have terrific CLEAN SHOWERS and BATHROOMS, as well as a full cafe that serves lobster, pizza, ice cream, and vegetables from the farm. There is also a camp store for any amenities you need to buy. This place is just a short drive from downtown Freeport, but it feels very remote and private. They also rent kayaks.

Rachel W.

Yelp
One of the most stunning views at a campground we have experienced. Was driving north through Maine and needed a campsite to stop at for the night. Picked this site because it seemed off the main road, yet accessible, and near water. This campground is on a working farm and those staying at the campground can visit the animals during the day. Location is east of Freeport about a 10 min drive through country roads. It was not near a main road which made the campground quiet. The camp office is open until 7 pm which is great when arriving late in the day. The office has a little camp store inside and takes credit cards. Sites They have a few sites with water/electric in the East Bay area. The Middle Bay area is just for tents. The West Bay is for RVS. You can pay for a oceanview or the premium spot of oceanfront. We payed for the oceanfront with no hook ups, and that view was spectacular. You could look right off the bluff to the bay below. There are stairs that make it easy to access the shore below. The shore is a great place to walk and enjoy the beautiful view. The sites are wide with plenty of space between neighbors and include picnic table and fire ring. There is one main bathroom centrally with several volt toilets throughout the camp. Also there are water faucets scattered throughout the sites. The bathroom was clean the the showers had hot water. Overall a nice place to camp.

Kaleb W.

Yelp
we stayed at site 309 and it was amazing! perfect shady spot equidistant between two bathrooms and a short walk down to the water. we brought a cast iron grill plate to cook on and it was the perfect choice. the fire pits have metal grates that will swivel and sit above the fire but we didn't want to cook our food direct on that, so for cooking i'd recommend at least having some aluminum foil or a grill plate of sorts! we are already planning our next getaway to the campgrounds!

Brenda C.

Yelp
I was so looking forward to staying at this campground as my children have and loved it. I think if you are in a tent on the ocean, you'll have a great experience. If you happen to get one of the tent sight coming into the circle you have all the cars passing you with their headlights and dust. Not a great experience. We were in an RV which are placed in the center of a field. Not the woodsy experience I was expecting. But even that was ok. What really upset me was the lack of bathrooms for this area. We had an outhouse next to us, "REALLY"? If you wanted to use a bathroom or shower, you had to go by car near the office. When I did use it, no toilet paper or paper towels to dry your hands. There were three kids in the office that could have been checking the bathrooms for these things. One lady before me was complaining that her toilet was plugged. Please spend some money and put in some decent bathrooms and showers and attendants to watch over them.

Yelp
Very beautiful place, definitely a cut above the usual 'campground'. On a working farm, the camping is quite spread out with lots of pasture and shoreline. Note that when they say a site has NO shade...it has NO shade, and is probably a grassy spot on the edge of a field. Pros: -very well run with helpful staff -many grassy campsites -very clean shower and bath areas -gorgeous wide open areas -lots of places for kids to explore with their bikes -a wonderful "shore dinner" of lobsters and steamers on Sat. Nights($25) -beautiful views from many campsites -the premier ocean front ones. -kayaks and canoes to rent -close to Freeport for those midnight runs to LL Bean just to see if it is indeed open 24 hrs. -the water in Casco bay was bath water warm! Kids swam and jumped off a bridge into it (at high tide of course) Gotta not mind seaweed. Cons (most no fault of theirs really) -be very aware of the tide cycle when planning your trip if you want to kayak. There are 10 ft tides there and if you have a tide cycle like we did, you'll end up with NO water in the bay during the main part of the day---like 10 AM to about 4PM. They also will not rent unless it's w/in 2 hrs of high tide. -the "outhouses" are temples of doom.. Or smell at least. The bathhouses are quite nice. The women in our group refused to use the outhouses. -certain sites on the place can be susceptible to the odor of, well, cows and their poop. Not a giant problem, but definitely there. -several of the site areas have VERY small sites...starting from about 132 to about 150, the sites are small and RIGHT on the road, we would have been really disappointed if we'd have gotten them. So nevertheless I'm giving 5 stars overall because of the time we had and how beautiful and interesting it is. Definitely go!

Emily S.

Yelp
Love this campground! This is my third stay here over the past 10 years, they have grown a lot, but I still love them. I have always been later in the season, so the campground was a lot more full then I was used to, but our campsite still felt private. I love that they have their own hiking trails and kayaks that you can rent right from their office. Also the fact that is is, essential a working farm with live stock and many activities going on is awesome. It's close to so many other things to do as well. All the employees are very friendly and I like that you can book online and view the sites before you book.

Ann P.

Yelp
This campground is so pretty. The views are lovely and the grounds pretty much immaculate. The staff are some of the nicest in the world. It ended there. Sites are on top of each other in spots (we had 323 and it was tiny and all roots and on top of a site to our rear). Our neighbors had a tent outhouse on the border of our site so we got to watch them piss and poop all weekend. Little did they know we could see inside. We also heard them well into the wee hours Sat. AM as they drank and talked until 1 AM. Also, we had three sites around us with lots of kids. They congregated in front of our site most of the weekend and at any given time, 8-12 kids were running, biking or screaming. A few times, they played hide and seek and were all around our site. They were good kids and at 10, their parents settled them down but until 10, it was bedlam at times. The outhouses stuck to high heaven. The main shower area gave us the creeps (wood floors YUCK and tight quarters so the shower curtain clung to you as you showered) so we shared the accessible shower room and made out ok. If you have kids, they will love it here. Fun for biking and kayaking and SUP on the bay. Brilliant views. Super dog friendly which I love as I prefer to dogs to people. Rosie, from the site across from us was alone a few times while her owners partied next door and she cried quite a bit. She also was left outside in a thunder and lightning storm so cried for two hours. Too many distractions for us to really enjoy Recompence but it did have redeeming qualities worthy of 4 stars: staff, views, setting on Casco Bay.

Michelle D.

Yelp
Recompence Campground is beautiful. I had the pleasure of camping here in late October and my site was *on* the *ocean*. that's a first for me. the whole place is entirely charming, dog friendly, and not too far away from other stuff to do ~ an easy camping get away from the Portland area, which seems fairly rare. did i mention how friendly the staff are? they have a little shop that sells wood and other stuff you might need or want. the only downsides: i hear the summer dates can fill up pretty quickly, so if you want a waterfront site over 4th of July weekend, you will need to book online January 1. also, the sites are a little pricier than my ideal. but once you factor in the savings of not having to drive some place a couple more hours away... or once you get a couple of friends to share your site... i will be back to Recompence :-)

Katie S.

Yelp
I'm no cupcake, and I'm also no stranger to primitive bathroom situations when backpacking, nevermind car camping. Believe me when I say that the bathrooms in this place are DISGUSTING. This morning I found the main bathroom covered in vomit. Last night I had a shower experience that left me feeling compelled to douse my feet in hand sanitizer (and I was wearing sandals). The floor in the "new" showers was covered in toilet paper. My boyfriend reported seeing (and smelling) suspicious brown smears all over the shower curtains in the men's bathroom. They seemed to have plenty of staff on hand to drive by our site several times and scold us about where we'd parked our extra car (and offer contradictory information about where it should be placed). I suggest reallocating this manpower and directing some serious attention to the bathrooms. Although with the price they charge to pack you in like sardines on the waterfront, they could probably afford another bathroom entirely- but what's the point if it's not maintained? Wolfe's Neck, take care of your s*** - literally.

Jennifer E.

Yelp
Fantastic camping experience. I loved that you could see photos of your site on the website so you could find the perfect location. Staff was very friendly and helpful, facilities were clean and pleasant. The farm was also nice. Will definitely be planning a future visit. The ocean-front sites are a bit pricey compared to standard in-the-woods camping, but SO worth it.

debra r.

Yelp
We loved this campground! Friendly staff. Beautiful ocean sites for tents or RVs. We kayaked, hiked, biked and even went into Freeport by Uber for dinner one night. We had an RV so did not have a car. Restrooms and showers were clean. The farm is fun to visit. We would definitely stay again

Zachary G.

Yelp
really good camping spot. views and all really nice playground for me and the boy scout troop fun to swim in the ocean and water sports are fun too

Adriana V.

Yelp
Beautiful campground!! Staff so friendly and helpful. My biggest complaint and probably the reason I wouldn't return is the bathrooms and showers. Lots of outhouses but the very few flush toilets. One stall was so small, my knees practically touched the door. The showers are so small too, and the hot water would go in and out. I will say they were never dirty it just seems that very little attention was paid to the design and function of the bathrooms and showers.

Allison K.

Yelp
We are used to camping in cape cod and ct. First time trying out a campground in Maine and might be our last. We read that on Wednesday's and Friday's you could order pizza so we packed one less dinner to cook. Come to find out the entire food service option is closed due to staff shortage without any warning or heads up. Thankfully we discovered bow street market. I have never dealt with so many mosquitoes and horse flies even with citronella. The water is unswimmable if it isn't high tide and even then you are being attacked by horse flies. My dog and I attempted to swim but instead dealt with getting covered in mud which dried as clay. Due to the lack of swimming you have kids with no entertainment screaming at all hours and antagonizing our dogs. If you do get a site near the outhouses make sure you make plans to leave when the staff empty them or you will be dry heaving from the scent. Maybe make known when the outhouse emptying is occurring instead of praying excessively it's not happening when you see the sewage truck driving by daily. Camping can be made doable with adequate knowledge and heads up over the conditions. Expected to spend my days swimming with my dogs without bugs attacking us (I understand this isn't controlled by the campground). We would have been better off camping at Nickerson state park which is our normal spot. Would have rated higher if we were aware ahead of time about the swimming, the amount of loud screaming kids, and the closure of the food service. Only pro is this is the first campground we have visited that dogs and alcohol are both allowed. So basically make sure you have a screen tent, you won't be having a fire at night, have wax ear plugs, don't have a site near an outhouse, don't stay in middle bay if you want to shower, don't stay near a trail if you have dogs, pack all meals needed, and only book when high tide is during the day if you want to swim, but watch out for horse flies. Then your stay will be 4 stars.

Yelp
What a gem of a campground! Anyone looking for a beautiful campground with a tent only area overlooking the water situated on a beautifully wooded site must visit Recompence! The staff is super friendly, clean bathroom stalls, a nice little store selling items you may have forgotten at home (grill plate) and even fresh local milk (delicious!), plus hot showers for when you need one and even an ice cream shack! My kids enjoyed visiting the farm and walking the trails! Plus it's convenient to many local parks, beaches, and LL Bean shopping is fun right in Freeport!

Rachel P.

Yelp
Great camping experience. We only stayed for one night and wished we had been there longer. My husband and I had a small tent and stayed at site 142. It was great and I love that you can see photos of all the sites on the campground's website. Our site had nice coverage and enough privacy. Each site seemed big enough and the bathrooms were clean. There were several families with lots of children, but they calmed down at night. The staff was friendly and the water views were beautiful.

Jack D.

Yelp
Went camping here during hurricane Arthur. During the Fourth of July. This is a great campground. The farm is super cool. Cows! Sheep! The bathrooms are nice. Beware there are outhouses with a serious drop but they are well maintained. Site 159 is the best one in my opinion but any of the ocean view field spots are nice as well. Great service at the front desk. Bug spray to chocotacos which are essential. We will be visiting again.

Kelly G.

Yelp
I'll start by saying that this is a clean and beautiful campground with friendly staff and great ocean views. I stayed here with a group of 7 other friends (we are all in our 20s & 30s) and we were really looking forward for a weekend away from our busy schedules to relax and spend time with each other over the course of the weekend. TL;DR - "Quiet Hours" literally means "Silent Hours" here, so this is not the campground for you if you plan to enjoy the company of your friends and family while camping. On our first night we all got in late as we were coming from work a couple of hours away. We didn't have dinner cooked until around 9:15pm and enjoyed our time sitting by the fire at our campsite while we ate dinner. We had some light music playing and were talking and laughing a normal amount, but no one was being overly loud. We're a respectful group of people and were aware of the sites around us. At exactly 10:00pm, our neighbor came over and asked us to turn down our music as it was now quiet time. We understood and respectfully turned it down and lowered our voices. Not long after that, a campground staff member drove up and said that he had received multiple phone calls complaining about our noise level. He was kind and told us that he still wanted us to have fun, but to keep it down a bit more. We again apologized and respectfully lowered our voices even further to soft whispers. We have all been camping before and understand quiet time. We were literally whispering. About 20 minute later, the staff member came back and told us that he could hear us from all the way across the campground and threatened to call the cops on us. We were extremely confused because we had literally been whispering, and even before that we did not feel that we had been that loud. We felt that the threat of police action was quite extreme, and we even asked if there was another campsite we could move to that was a bit more removed so that we could continue to enjoy each other's company, at a respectful level. There was no other campsite available, and again he told us to keep having fun but to be mindful of the people around us (which we absolutely were). At this point, we looked around at the other sites (they're all positioned around a big open field) and realized that not a single fire was lit and there was not a single sound - no talking, no crickets, no nothing. It was 10:30pm. Again, we had all been camping before and understood quiet hours, but this place literally observes "silent hours". It definitely felt extreme. A few of us stayed up talking in near silent whispers (we could not hear each other at all unless we were sitting right next to each other) and eventually just went to bed. The next day as we were getting ready to leave the campground for a few hours to explore nearby Freeport, another staff member pulled up to our site and came to talk to us. He told us that he had been notified of the complaints from the night before and again made a comment along the lines of "I don't want to have to call the cops on you...". We let him know that we were uncomfortable with the multiple threats of calling the police because we had truly taken all multiple measures to be quiet and respectful and it seemed so extreme that they would threaten that. Again we asked if we could relocate, and were told that was not an option. We let him know that we would not be a problem and he left. That night, we moved our fire to our second campsite (since there were 8 of us we booked two campsites per the campground rules) which was right next to the bigger one we had originally been spending our time in. The second one had more trees around it which we hoped would block more sound, though we did have every intention of maintaining out light whispers at 10:00pm. A few minutes before 10:00, we turned off our music and kept our voices to whispers. At 10:09, a staff truck drove by and idled next to our campsite for a few minutes which had us on edge especially since we had been near silent and we weren't sure if we'd be threatened with police action again for no reason. No one got out of the truck or said anything to us, but it had us so on edge that we just called it a night and went to bed. Overall, this was a really confusing and bad experience. I would never stay here again, even with family, because when I go camping I like to spend time with the people I'm with sharing stories around the fire while still being respectful of my neighbors. I've been camping many times at different campgrounds and have never had such an extreme experience as I did here. I can understand wanting to maintain a family-friendly environment, but you better hope that your family/friends/kids are absolutely silent after 10pm if you plan to stay here. We all wished that the extremely strict "quiet hours" policy had been made clear to use when we booked two sites for 8 adults - you would think they would give you a heads up.

Yelp
Great place to just camp last minute without a reservation! During our new England tour, we just needed a place to camp out for the night and this place was perfect. Staff was friendly and the sites were clean and quiet. Great place to just camp out in nature and enjoy the fresh new England air! =)

Yelp
Nice campsites, some quite close together. We stayed overnight in a tent site facing the bay. Beautiful area to paddle if you have a canoe or kayak.

Yelp
Not for me. Place has potential but offers little in personal comfort. Restrooms are from the 60's, showers are the same, few and not convent. RV sites are rough, most do not have a level pad big enough to accommodate a rig and picnic table under the awning. Until much needed improvements are made, I would not return!! There has to be better campgrounds in the area!!!

Yelp
We have been camping at Recompence for years, but this year they surpassed all our expectations with incredible customer service. We had trouble with our camper and Josh and Leonard came to the rescue going above and beyond to help us out. Love the views, the farm, the snack shack, and all the staff.

Yelp
This is by far the best campground that I have ever stayed at. Friendly staff, and a great website. It made the booking and site selection easy. The campsites are super spacious, and the staff leaves you alone. The campground is very quiet early, so I'd recommend for kids/family. They offer great access to Casco Bay, and a great launch spot for kayakers. The Osprey sanctuary and abundance of wildlife (we saw a seal) make the harbor a great paddle for all skill levels. Very convenient to downtown Freeport... I'd highly recommend this place.

Yelp
We enjoyed camping here. The camp sites were good size and had trees to separate one site from another. We loved the fresh produce farm stand, and the snack bar was surprisingly great - included ingredients from the farm. The trails around the area were pretty nice, and the distance to Freeport and the Wolf Neck Park was great. A bonus was having a site on the water. Bathrooms were also in good shape.

Yelp
We stayed in the a West Bay side area near the playground. We had lots of kids with us and they really enjoyed the playground area as well as the close shore access at low tide to explore the rocks. We also rented a canoe and enjoyed taking short rides during the high tide. The campsites were well sized with some built in privacy between sites. The hot showers were free and the flush toilets lovely. The staff was helpful and the full stocked camp store had everything we forgot to bring! We will be back!

Yelp
One of the best campgrounds I've ever been to. Very quiet, plenty of space between sites, and clean. I camped at one of the sites on the water which was a real treat and a highlight of my trip. I highly recommend Recompence and if I'm ever back in Maine I will definitely stay there again.

Yelp
We spent one night at this gorgeous campground on our way thru Freeport, Maine. Wish we could of stayed longer. It was great. Our site was absolutely stunning (site 75) and not too far from the outhouses (clean for an outhouse) and water. The showers were kept fairly clean, definitely some of the cleanest I've seen at a campground. All and all we enjoyed our stay at recompense shore and we will certainly be back in the future.
