"Located on the University of Western Australia’s Crawley campus by the Swan River, this debut Handwritten Collection property emphasizes eco-conscious design and a social mission that reinvests net revenue into scientific research. Rooms range from Standard to Executive with city and river panoramas, while an 80-seat restaurant spotlights West Australian produce and Margaret River wines; the hotel pairs urban convenience with nature-forward sensibilities and a commitment to local impact." - SilverKris

Good location and view. Room was clean. Parking space isn't big and not easy to find. Ladies are nice when check in and request extra room key. The coffee machine doesn't work (no water come out and error light), I google the manual to make sure how to use it. Try to call the reception at night around 9:30pm but no answer. That's ok. Next day, I try to tell the male receptionist regarding the coffee machine when check out. The guy just rushing to doing my check out and said " I pretty sure the coffee machine is working." without look at me. How he can "pretty sure" without any checking! It is not the right attitude to the customer who just told you the issue happened and you refute straight away. Sorry I won't come back and not recommend . Updated: Thank you to Soni (Manager) for contacting me. I am appreciate her response and following up. I can feel that Wonil Hotel is trying to take care of all the customers. Willing to come back in the future if have chance.

The rooms were very nice, very clean and very comfortable. We had an issue with a dodgy guy trying to get past us at the key locked front entrance on the ground floor (the doors take a little too long to close at night). We told the guy at the reception desk and he took my wifes concerns about our car being parked outside (the dodgy guy watched us park by the university and followed us). The hotel staff were kind enough to allow us to park in the staff car parking for the night which was very much appreciated.

Worst experience ever! Christmas Eve get to the hotel my wife had booked for a family Christmas near her family. Been working and driving all day. To get told I wasn’t part of the booking and there was no key or parking for me. They say to me that there is no key but the parking had been sorted. They can’t give me a key without talking to my wife, however the have no number to call he on file. We see my wife get into the lift the guy calls out to her and she just ignores us. So I end up having to go home.

Stunning hotel right in the banks of Matilda Bay. Stayed here twice now for business and always relaxing coming back to my room after hectic days. Whilst it’s a little out of the cbd, traffic gets congested during peak so takes longer to get to appointments. Apart from that, room facilities are great, restaurant is nice and views are amazing.

This hotel is a bit weird. While it is well located for views of the river, it's not really convenient for accessing the city. Parking is ridiculous, only 8 spaces available for the whole hotel, and the 'drop off' zone which is a tight turnaround had cars parked in it the whole time we were there which meant having to make three point turns to get around them. The room itself was comfortable, but not well lit, particulary the bathroom. And it had a strange sliding door between the bathroom and bedroom, that couldn't be used to access the bathroom, so we couldn't work out why it was there. Bed and pillows were very comfortable. The room was serviced daily, but things weren't replaced. For example, we used the milk in the fridge the first morning, and it was never replaced, making the tea and coffee making facility not usable for us. They also never packed away the iron and teapot (not a big deal, but it's usually done as part of servicing), and we had a bottle of wine with cooler and glasses in our room from the bar one night, and they never cleared that away either. One day we were not given a bath mat. The room was clean and tidy, so I know these things seem trivial, but this hotel claims to be 4 star, and I'm just not feeling it. We were there in Spring, the weather was mild, so the fact that the hallways to the rooms are outdoors (undercover, but open to the weather) wasn't a big issue. However, I could see that in Summer it would be unbearably hot in those corridors, and in rainy or windy weather it would also be an issue. I don't really understand this design, it doesn't make a lot of sense given the Perth weather. The bar is advertised to be open until 10pm. One night we returned from dinner at 9:15pm and went to the bar for a drink only to be told they had closed. While I can understand that keeping staff there when there's no guests is expensive, if the hotel says the bar is available until 10pm, it should be. We were in a room facing the river, away from the road, however, the road noise was still quite loud in the room (probably because of the outdoor hallways mentioned above). I can imagine that the rooms facing the road would be incredibly noisy. Overall, we did enjoy our stay, but I probably would not return to the Wonil. I should mention that all staff I encountered were kind and helpful, and I have no concerns at all in that regard.

The location is a big winner, as it is on the Swan River next to the University of WA. The views from the lobby and bar area is stunning. Although we had secured parking I think the parking would otherwise be terrible for the other patrons as it was street parking. The building was difficult to navigate to other floors due to lift security syatems. You could also not access the lobby floor automatic doors at that level if you did not reside on that level. The staff did try to help with access between floors. But that was a problem as my brother in law became trapped in the fire stair well when he tried to access another level using that stair well. It seems there is only one other stair well that the hotel is acesssible between floors. At times that stair well was difficult to locate due to internal closed door corridors. The breakfast menu was average, a simple bacon and eggs would have been nice instead of the fancy menu.

Stayed 3 nights had to move rooms after the first night as the room was very noisy from the very busy road behind. The 2nd room was less noisy but still loud. In the morning there was music playing on the deck which was loud in our room, and a very loud wedding hosted there is the afternoon. Bathrooms could have been cleaner. The hotel is abit in no mans land with no shops near buy but great for walks on the river. Breakfast was good except the chef didn’t listen to requests for sauce in the side ect and we had dinner one night and 2 people had the duck but each dish was very different with one having potatos and one having none but radish on top. So works needs to be done in the kitchen to ensure requests are met.

KICKED OUT BY THE RECEPTIONIST I visited the hotel on July 24 around 10:30-11am to meet a friend at the lobby restaurant. I arrived with my bicycle and fully understand that bicycles are not allowed in the lobby. I also did not expect the hotel to store it for me, and I can accept this rule without issue. The real disappointment came from the receptionist’s reaction. The moment she saw my bicycle, her expression changed noticeably, and she addressed me in a cold, dismissive tone all the way. She knew I was there for a friend catch up (and my friend already waited for me there before I arrived), her words were simply “The restaurant is closed,” which gave me the impression that it was out of service entirely. At most hotels, staff would politely clarify that breakfast had ended and lunch would start later, rather than leaving the guest with a misleading impression. While I was trying to figure out how to handle the bicycle situation and still have lunch with my friend, her demeanor made me feel distinctly unwelcome — as if the message was, “You can’t do this” or “You can’t go there.” - her expressions and tone strongly conveyed that impression. At the very end, she finally mentioned, “The restaurant serves lunch at 12 pm” , after I chased the restaurant question though. I understand she has no obligation to make exceptions for my bicycle, but as a representative of the hospitality industry, basic courtesy and professionalism should be expected. There was no attempt to offer an alternative, no effort to make me feel welcome, and no warmth in her communication. I had planned to enjoy coffee and lunch with my friend, then stay for an online meeting in the afternoon. Unfortunately, within five minutes of arriving, the unpleasant interaction made me leave altogether. It was especially disappointing because I had been looking forward to trying this hotel for a long time, combining my cycling plan, work schedule, and meeting a friend I hadn’t seen in a while. Rules are fine, but the way they are communicated matters just as much. I truly hope the hotel will invest in training staff to deliver messages with professionalism, sincerity, and respect.
