Trencher Review - Echo Park - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Trencher is an all-day cafe in Echo Park, and one of the Eastside’s best sandwich shops that you’ve probably never heard of. The no-frills space is small, but fun, and actually filled with people who live in the neighborhood. You’re definitely going to want that chicken banh mi." - Brant Cox

This place has the best coffee in the entire neighborhood, especially for those who came from post-Soviet countries and are looking for that familiar, nostalgic taste. This is exactly where you’ll find it. The service is always friendly , the staff are warm, smiling, positive, and genuinely helpful. I keep coming back again and again. They also have both indoor and outdoor seating, which is very convenient.

Google
Woodcat coffee is my favorite cafe in LA! (Along with Dinosaur coffee, their sister shop) Their coffee is top tier, and the cafe is very low drama, cozy, efficient, and unpretentious... unlike some of the competition (you probably know who). Never have to wait in a line that stretches out into the street. But their coffee is some of the best in town, if not the best.

Google
Being from Seattle, we’re living in Los Angeles I love the authority selection of cafés but this company had a special drink but I just had to try and oh my God do I love it! Hi Tracy, ice Spanish latte also known as “sweet baby Joe “ this iced cinnamon flavored drink or is the soap, smooth perfection in a cup! Hey Siri does wonderful have a lot of eclectic items I might recommend trying to chocolate brownie cookie. I love this place up it says around for a while!

Lucky Duck

Google
Delightful barista's mood quickly soured when some blonde woman, presumably owner or management, walked in and started barking orders. Cardamom syrup was gross but grosser is ownership who treat their staff aggressively, do better

Google
Great coffee around Echo Park. The area feels chaotic but this shop is a nice reprieve. Lots of metered spots nearby (though it gets crowded). Tall ceilings and open space. No AC, so it can get hot. Little seating with uncomfortable stools and small tables. Has wifi. Wouldn’t want to work here for an extended period of time, but overall it’s a good coffee bar. Friendly staff and service, decent prices. Took me way too long to realize woodcat meant rabbit (or hare?). Very cute haha.

Awesome coffee shop with great retro, industrial vibe with tasty coffee . Love the coffee selection and staffs were super friendly and nice !! Since its on my neighbourhood, gonna go all the time now.

Google
Brief but great experience at Woodcat. The attendant was friendly, and the drip coffee I got was strong but tasty/not sour. I will try to visit again and maybe get some work done there.

Google
DELICIOUS coffee :-) the orange mocha was light and sweet with the right amount of citrus. Quite pricey ($8) with non-dairy alternative but it is understandable for the area and quality. I recommend!

Yelp
I've really grilled like this place. It's got a really wonderful environment to sit in with the other seatings my favorite super early in the morning. To check, the croissant has an addictive property that would require a 12 step program. The coffee had a wonderful flavor to it but the environment is very welcoming. I would recommend starting my day every day if I could. Shravan is a champ! Say hello to him!

Yelp
I stopped by here with some friends on a Wednesday afternoon for a coffee. I had an almond milk latte, which was very good. There was some seating inside, but we opted to take our drinks to-go. Service was fine; I didn't think the barista was particularly friendly, but oh well.
google avatar

Jamie O.

Yelp
Apple Maps told me that this coffee shop would be open until 6pm on Wednesdays, which was not true! We came in at 5:28pm thinking we had time but as we were walking in and saw their actual hours we realized we were wrong - totally our bad! I would usually hate to impose, but the barista was so nice and said she would still make our drinks. We ordered two Iced Matcha Lattes and they were so good! Wish we would have come earlier because I really liked the aesthetic of the store and especially loved the music they were playing (jazzy r&b). Will definitely have to come again at a more convenient time for the workers!

Yelp
It was rainy winter day in LA and my friend and I were laying in the house all day, just enjoyng the greyness of LA. Nothing could really compare to the amount of joy and peace we were experiencing. But going to this little cozy coffee shop really was the only place that even could fit to that level of comfort. The coffee was delicious and the crossaint was perfect. The service was what could be expected at any coffee shop.

Yelp
Actually, I love this spot! I wanted to go to the one down the street but it looked like they're packed. I still wanted to go there so I looked for parking a block a way and actually found Woodcat and decided to go here instead. I LOVE WOODCAT. Vibe is chill and coffee is good! I always get an oat iced latte and it's smooth and still has the coffee taste. This place also has an WiFi to work or whatever - def will come back here instead!

Yelp
Cute indoor setting! Coffee was delicious! The service was good and the atmosphere is nice. Perfect coffee to grab and go or chat with friends. Loved it

Yelp
Was glad to find this place since I wasn't having much luck finding a good place to grab a cup of coffee and work for a bit. Saw this was about a 10 minute walk from where I parked and decided to stop by. The vibes in this place are super chill and I noticed quite a few people there were on laptops. The cashier was very friendly and saw me with my computer and told me the wifi before I even ordered. With that being said the coffee and croissant I had were pretty good. I'm knocking off a star because after about an hour the wifi started going in and out which made it hard to finish my work. I still recommend this place though

Yelp
1030 AM today I stopped by my favorite coffee spot, and they were wiped out of savory pastries. I just did not want anything sweet this morning. Have walked by Woodcat Coffee before, figured they may have something for me. Walked in and asked the nice guy at the counter what savory options they had. Fortunate for me there were several. He highly recommended the spinach pastry. I left with a spinach and a ham/cheese filled croissant style pastry. The nice guy at the counter was right. The spinach pastry is delicious. While we enjoyed the ham/cheese delight it was not as good as the spinach one. This is a nice, cute neighborhood place. Nice decor, great service and 2 exceptional products I experienced today. Will DEFINITELY be back.

Yelp
Woodcat's beans rule, they're also so good about grinding them and knowledgeable about what kind of grind you need by just saying what you use. Only problem is they're so far away, takes forever to get there, there's no parking and there's dumb hipsters outside reading books- like it's echo park dog you're literally sitting next to throw up and trash, stop pretending like you're having a peaceful reading day go back to Boise
google avatar

Bianca Z.

Yelp
This was a really cute place to grab coffee in the area. I noticed a ton of people use this as a work space but it's also perfect for coffee dates. They have some really great pastries as well!
google avatar

Yelp
Had a great experience today at Woodcat. I came in to ask about wholesale beans. I spoke with Eric who was so friendly and informative. He told me about the different blends that he would recommend for cold brew and I got an iced coffee to try. It was very tasty. I went across the street to Steroscope and the experience was opposite and the cold brew was very sour. I would definitely recommend going to Woodcat, inviting and quality coffee. Can't wait to test these out at home; Dino Cat Espresso & Papua New Guinea

Yelp
Like someone said in previous review. Customer service is a joke. They act like you're a bother...I'm a paying customer not asking for anything for free. Save yourself from this establishment, they serve your drink and let you guess which one is yours...oh and you get to put your own lid on because apparently you don't pay enough for your coffee and hostile customer service.

Yelp
First I drink coffee and I know things. Lol. Without further ado let's begin this coffee bar review. Woodcat Coffee Bar (est 2014) is a neighborhood coffee shop & roaster in Echo Park, Los Angeles. They have dedicated & friendly team of baristas would love to serve you some good drinks and pastries. From the outside it looks small but once you enter it's quite spacious. Interior decor was very hip and cool with wooden bar stool chairs and tables. Upon my entry, I quickly looked for their menu which was posted high up in the wall and there are decent coffee drink and teas to choose from. I decided to order an Iced Latte. And it was perfectly concocted to my liking. Service was on point and prices were reasonable. Moreover, they sell merch and coffee bags. Staff was ebullient, energetic, amiable and professional. Customers were respectful and hippy. Free Wifi available. Parking is mostly metered but there are surrounding public lots. Overall, I had a good order experience and refreshing iced drink. I will definitely come back and I recommend this coffee spot.

Yelp
My latte was meh. My husband's latte was bad. The service was disappointing. The girl behind the counter went from a big smile when assisting the people in front of us, to a cold scowl when she turned to us. I smiled and she stared back blankly like I insulted her or something. Don't like walking out of a coffee shop feeling like crap so I probably won't return.
google avatar

Mollie H.

Yelp
If you are in the area you should try Woodcat but when you come here- think of it as that one soup episode from Seinfeld. We all know the one. Don't expect to be shown any human kindness but you can expect decent coffee.
google avatar

Kevin J.

Yelp
On my next round of beans to purchase, I decided to return to Woodcat for their delicious coffee! But never in my life would I have thought the following: What am I, a ghost? It's not negative or neutral service, but an empty kind of service where unless they're pressing a button to put in your order, they're chatting amongst themselves. Not even a hello. It's 8am in the morning, there are three of you behind the bar, but no one even said hello or asked what I would like. Getting heavy hipster bias vibes as I quickly order my coffee and grab a bag of beans to get out of there as quickly as possible. Not sure if I'll return...

Justus L.

Yelp
Owners removed google review so I'll put it here, Overheard workers talking about Roaches and the shop's Roach traps on my last visit which is pretty gross. Combine that with very "meh" coffee and I don't think it's a must try shop

Leslie L.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this coffee shop because I heard so many good things about their coffee, but to my disappointment customer service and coffee were terrible! I would give 0 stars! I think the baristas need re-training on customer service and practice more kindness towards EVERYONE, not just one race. Won't be spending my hard-earned money here anymore.

Yelp
This is probably my favorite place to get coffee in LA. I love to come here before going to Dodger games. I always park in the lot next to the burger place on Laveta. I always order the cold brew with cream and light ice. As many times as I've been here, they never mess up my order. I truly appreciate that they listen and make things right. There's nothing worse than getting a badly prepared cold brew. Their pastries are also delicious and they have a lot of other things in the fridge. I've seen more sweets in there, even some keto stuff. So, this place just gets it right. They're a gem in the LA coffee scene.
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
My son got me their coffee for Christmas. It is one of the best coffees I've had. I just wish they were near me instead of LA.
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
Kinda bummed, as I read other reviews that talk of how great this coffee shop is, I didn't feel welcomed at all. The woman taking my order was impatient and curt. I knew what I wanted going in so I was ready as soon as she asked me what I wanted. When she attempted to pour my espresso into the milk she spilled some on the counter and immediately cleaned up. I should have spoken up and said something as my drink is now mainly milk. I would like to add that the other employee seemed really nice and was smiling. I wish he had taken my order and prepared my drink. Sadly, I would not recommend this establishment to friends based on my experience, and taste of my coffee.
google avatar

Hanna J.

Yelp
A really good cappuccino I have had in a really long time!! As on my way to stereoscope across the street, but thought I should try to place out. Honestly a big fan of stethoscope but I think woodcat beats them! Also, ice coffee is pretty good, def hits the spot! There's a lot of seats inside and outside!
google avatar

Yelp
The first word that comes to mind when I think of Woodcat is "reliable". When you're a coffee shop in the middle of a happening LA neighborhood, there's no shortage of competition. Woodcat isn't the newest coffee shop in the area, nor is it the trendiest, the largest, or the most photogenic. But it is, without a doubt, the most consistent, and that's why I keep coming back after so many years. Where Woodcat stands out: - The seating. Woodcat is by any measure a small shop, yet they use their space well. This isn't the kind of shop that attracts loads of people looking to take over tables and wall-outlets for hours as they do work. This is nice. It means that if you're coming here to have coffee with a friend or two before going on a walk around the lake or grabbing a drink or a bite at a nearby restaurant, you'll always be able to find a seat or two. Maybe you'll be at a table (they have both inside and out), maybe you'll be inside on a stool or outside on a bench, but you'll be able to sit and chat comfortably as you enjoy your drink. This brings me to point #2. - The coffee. Pretty important at a coffee shop. Woodcat's coffee is consistently good. Their baristas know what they're doing and you'll be happy with whatever you order. - Parking. There are a couple big City of LA lots right around the corner. This is as easy as parking gets in central LA. - The vibe. The decor is super chill with lots of well-worn natural wood on the furniture and the accents. It's quiet enough to have a relaxed conversation with enough background noise from the other conversations going on that it doesn't feel like a library. The clientele it attracts are likewise delightfully unpretentious. Initially I was going to leave a 4-star review because Woodcat doesn't have anything that adds a "wow" to put it over the edge to five stars. As I wrote the review it hit me that this lack of pizzazz is Woodcat's pizzazz. Much like "no tattoos" is the new "tattoos", this mellow reliability is what sets Woodcat apart. It's definitely a 5-star spot.

Yelp
Woodcat Coffee Bar is found on a busy part of Sunset Blvd in Echo Park and it is awesome! Their Cortado is great. The beans came across as mild and not too acidic. The Latte is not so strong which is not so surprising if you imagine that they used the same beans for the Cortado. They use their own beans, by the way, in case you're interested. There was a bit of a line to order and a short line to get your drink. A POS is set up at what is normally the door to get in the coffee shop. It's now a window to order and to pick up your drink. No entry allowed. Aside from one bench, there is no place to sit and enjoy your drink. This is strictly an order-and-go spot. Taking that into consideration, it is pretty amazing that the block in front of the shop was never vacant for too long, people kept parking, grabbing their drink and then leaving.
google avatar

Leah W.

Yelp
Such a lovely coffee shop with amazing drinks! I got parking on a Sunday right on the street a few spots down and it was pretty crowded but I still good a bench! Wifi is good and fast, a lot of people on laptops. My iced latte w oat milk was amazing! You can ask for "here" for a mug. We stayed for about 30 min and it stayed crowded the whole time. Everyone was super friendly.
google avatar

J M.

Yelp
Stopped by on a whim while in Echo Park and the bustling crowd inside was enough to pique my interest. After conversation with a few regulars, I learned Woodcat serves as a space to do work when Stereoscope several blocks away is packed. I went for a cortado and was pleased with how the drink came out. Service was sweet and quick.

Yelp
Friendly staff and great coffee spot. Would definitely recommend to anyone in the area!
google avatar

Catalina V.

Yelp
Went bcz I thought their pasties looked great in Yelp. Wanted to support it very bad but instead was received with attitude and poor service. I'm sorry am I bothering you? Chocolate croissant was stale, old, and poorly made. Asked if they had a microwave to at least warm it up.. nope instead I was looked upon with disgust. Nothing too special from the other 10 in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Bon V.

Yelp
Go elsewhere for coffee. Bitter, lacking flavor, and utterly an embarrassment to the wealth of great coffee that surrounds it. Tasteless espresso and cold brews. Kind staff and a nice location with a pleasant ambiance, however!
google avatar

Yelp
Great coffee. Amazing service especially cute Russian barista. Favorite spot in the neighborhood!

Yelp
I've never been so spontaneous about ordering anything in my life. I walked by here around 5pm Friday, did a double take, and then ordered an iced americano. My friend was also feeling hungry so we split a white miso kouign-amann. Looks like they don't let anyone in their stores as we ordered through a window similar to that of a drive thru. Despite that they still do have hand sanitizer which was appreciated. The americano was maybe under-extracted as it was slightly more sour than what I'm used to, but it was good overall. I like that they didn't put too much ice, and at $3.50 this is one of the cheaper ones I've seen in LA during my short time here. The kouign-amann was really good. Super flaky and buttery, and we both really liked the hard caramelized sugar on the bottom and the slight saltiness coming from the miso. I only wish they had reheated the pastry, as it had been clearly sitting out in the display case for a while.
google avatar

Diego G.

Yelp
Was in the area and stopped by for some coffee. The baristas were SUPER friendly and made me feel at home. One of the baristas noticed I was looking for the wifi password and walked over to help me out. Lots of people on their computers so overall the vibe was quiet and there was a good amount of seating. Next time I'm in the area I will definitely stop by.

Yelp
Another WFH lunch time coffee adventure. I'm gonna miss the do-able traffic times we've been having... But we decided to take advantage of these last few weeks before traffic inevitably gets worse for the summer time. Woodcat is a woman owned coffee shop along Sunset Blvd, near a lot of other interesting shops and restaurants, so once things fully open back up, I can imagine this being a good spot to grab a coffee and walk around. For now, even as things are starting to open up, they have an order at the door/window type service, which I appreciate. Street parking was relatively easy when I went, but I don't know if that's the norm or if it'll continue to be in the upcoming summer months and with relaxed Covid guidelines. We tried asking the guy taking our order but he pretty much rushed us out of there, haha. It wasn't busy but maybe he was just having a hard day, I won't take a star since it's my first time and I'll have to come back and see if that was just an off day. We've all been there. So you walk up, order, and wait for them to make your drink(s). Unfortunately there isn't a lot of space to wait around since it's just a sidewalk and there's people constantly passing by, so you're just maneuvering your way around the passerbyers. They're quick to make the drinks though. They have super delicious pastries available as well. I am a sucker for chocolate chip cookies and this place did not disappoint. I think they bring them in from a local bakery. We ordered our usual iced oat milk lattes, and they were really well made. I loved the perfect milk to coffee ratio. I hope all of this stands the test of time because I would love to make this a regular go-to spot.

Yelp
Had a great experience here thanks to a guy named Dingo who works here. Even though I had no idea Dingo was even legally allowed to be an official name, And even though the Kardashians haven't even named one of the many animals they get for social media clout (and almost immediately abandon because they aren't "animal people") Dingo either, I did in fact meet him and he did make me a very good cappuccino. Unlike CNN, None of this is fake news folks. Even the Kardashian bit is real. Go ahead, google how many pets the Kardashians have had (because it's a lot) and try to find out where they are now (because you can't). Spoiler alert, we all might have to side with PETA on this one. Only thing Dingo couldn't help me with were the breakfast tacos that are no longer served at Woodcat, but that's not his (or her) [or their] fault. Yes I am trying to protect the privacy of Dingos gender here, what are you an Amazon Alexa or something trying to steal their data? He or she or they did invite me down to pastry town though and we found some good options there. I also won't be specific of the gender of the pastry I got, but I will say it did contain gluten, one of the best proteins people pretend to have a problem with. Hey people with Gluten Intolerance, maybe try some tolerance for once. There's a museum of tolerance in LA you can visit and maybe that will help. Really tired of y'all creating and spreading misinformation about a little protein who can't fight back. Gluten Intolerance is not a replacement for a personality. The real culprit is probably your poor diet and lack of microbiome but yeah let's all blame Gluten. Evil Gluten which provides the basis for bread a food that has fed literally billions. That said Woodcat should really think about bringing those breakfast tacos back for these protein racists. Mason Brooks Yelp Elite (how I don't know)

Yelp
Went to Woodcat Coffee Bar in the morning on a weekday and it was very busy. Their chai comes from a concentrate so I decided to order the matcha latte. It was a standard matcha.

Yelp
Cool & Hip coffee shop ! Coffee is yummy !!! Also the pastries!! This place is petite and warm.. feel so relaxing to hang out here. There are milk alternatives, soy, almond & oat! Employees are cool looking ... kinda almost friendly!!! I will be back
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
I told the person taking the order it's my first time and he was helpful, courteous and made me feel welcomed. My oat milk latte was very good. I like that they have outdoor seating and even water for dogs. All around pleasant experience run by people who seem warm and kind. Will definitely keep this place in mind if I'm in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Judy E.

Yelp
Welp... if you are looking for the best pastries in this neighborhood this would be the spot to go. I had the ham and cheese croissant today and yesterday I had a blueberry cheesecake muffin type pastry and both were freaking amazing. Their lattes are top notch as well. The staff are super nice as well. Yesterday I forgot to ask for my latte iced and they immediately made me a new one no questions asked. I've got to be honest. I didn't want to like this place because I saw them as gentrifiers, overcrowding our neighborhood with yet another coffee shop, but they completely won me over. I have a hard time hating a place with food and drinks this tasty.
google avatar

Layla F.

Yelp
went in and bought an almond/strawberry croissant, was delicious and Messy however the staff informed me that they do not carry utensils. A plastic knife would have made this a lot easier to eat. If I had this issue it must happen to many people, please consider having some sort of utensils handy in case a guest requests it.

Lisa C.

Yelp
Not a fan of Woodcat. I found it overpriced and super overrated. Overall, I think there are much better coffee shops in the area to go to instead.
google avatar

Caitlin S.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop in the heart of Echo Park. Good COVID set up. Service was friendly and fast. I very much enjoyed my oat milk latte and my bf loved his iced vanilla latte. Paper cups are really cute too. Would definitely come back.
google avatar

Sophia L.

Yelp
They serve canyon coffee (one of the few organic ones I know of) over espresso here. Loved it in an iced oat latte. Would come back and recommend! Plus, covid ordering is safe since you can't / don't have to go indoors to order. They have a counter where they stay inside and you are outside ordering/picking up drinks.
google avatar

Marilyn E.

Yelp
I would like to be able to give this place a better score as it looked pretty good but charging more than most other places charge for a large for a tiny cup is a no no. Tried the Mexican mocha, like the idea of a spicy chocolatey coffee but all you taste is the heat cause they went a little too heavy on it. Dont get me wrong I love heat but as soon as it's all you taste it ruins the flavor. The key is balance and this place didnt have it.

Yelp
Out of all various equally solid coffee shops in Echo Park, Woodcat has long been my secret favourite of them all. With this review, the secret's clearly out! I love this small but mighty cafe that serves Wrecking Ball Coffee Roasters (SF). Whether it's an iced latte or an oat cappuccino, Woodcat always delivers the best of any and every coffee beverage of choice. Weekday visits are my preferred days. In my experience, weekday afternoons are perfect for reading a book and enjoying a cup of coffee. I haven't ever gone here to get work done so I can't say much about outlets and whatnot. If you want ace specialty coffee and the ideal spot to catch up with a friend or read a book, Woodcat got you covered.

Lissa O.

Yelp
I used to loveee coming to wood cat after a long day in campus to relax and catch up on studying. The cookies and iced coffee are my go to order. Since it had been a while that I've stopped by, I decided to bring a friend to show her this local spot. Before we ordered, we sat down for a bit to think about what we wanted. Not even 5 minutes later, the cashier comes up to us with a sarcastic tone asking us a passive aggressive question. "Are you waiting for drinks?" I know they don't serve your coffee at your table, so why bother asking a question you know the answer too? It felt like she was kicking us out bc other people who would buy drinks needed the seat. (As if we weren't going to get something already ) I told the cashier we would order in a bit but after getting talked to like that I decided to not get anything at all. It was unnecessary and rude. It's not affecting their pay if we are taking time to think about what we want. My friend wasn't comfortable staying either. I felt embarrassed for my friend since she is new to the area and we were looking forward to going inside. Hopefully I can go back with a better experience like I have gotten in the past. One sour moment shouldn't ruin my favorite coffee shop.
google avatar

Yelp
the matcha scone was delicious, coffee was just ok I would rather get my coffee at across the street at "stereoscope"When it comes to the staff the tall guy taking the orders could of been a bit more friendlier

Yelp
Cute wall decor and tasty coffee. I had a iced coffee with almond milk. Blue berry muffin and almond croissant seems fresh. Parking is on street.

Yelp
My favorite local bar. Nice service, good vibes inside, delicious coffee. Every cup is superior to all the other coffee shops around

Yelp
They had flies flying around all of their pastries look at the pictures I don't like any place that lets bugs over the food decided not to get anything here

Yelp
Woodcat Coffee Bar is a great little coffee shop, but during my weekday visit I couldn't help but think that they're bested by nearby establishments when it comes to both their food and drinks. For the purposes of this review, my points of comparison are Go Get Em Tiger and El Jefe Fish Tacos, who often park right across the street from Woodcat Coffee Bar. Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere? You've got a quaint little atmosphere at Woodcat Coffee Bar, and the staff are quick and friendly. Seating can be a bit limited, but at the very least you should be able to pull up to the bar. Both my tea and tacos came out quickly. Star. Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost? I'm hoping that the popularity of somewhat nearby staple HomeState is making breakfast tacos in Los Angeles 'a thing', and I was pleased to see that Woodcat had both chorizo and veggie breakfast tacos on the menu. I ordered two for $4.00 each, which was admittedly on the expensive side but not quite ridiculous to the point of leading to reduced stars. Star. Stars 3 and 4: How was the food? My iced masala chai tea was good, but admittedly paled a bit in comparison to the same beverage that I had at Go Get Em Tiger just the day prior. There was just an element that was missing although I couldn't pinpoint whether it might be cinnamon or something of the like. The breakfast tacos were okay, but to gather a point of comparison after my visit to Woodcat I walked across the street where El Jefe Fish Tacos was posted up also serving breakfast tacos for $4.00 each. There was really no comparison on account of the tortillas and quality and quantity of ingredients at El Jefe. Single Star. Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could? Woodcat is a nice spot, but there are simply better options nearby. No Star.
