16 Joshua Tree Airbnbs to Rent for Your Next Desert Retreat - AFAR

"A decidedly quirky gallery/gallery-museum in the downtown arts district that contributes to the town's offbeat creative scene and is emblematic of the locally focused, whimsical art offerings visitors can wander into while exploring the main strip." - Nicholas DeRenzo

What a crazy, interesting, fun , artsy experience! Don't miss this free stop across the street from Joshua Tree National Park Visitor Center. It's right next to Joshua Tree Saloon. Look for the colorful painted bus and walk past it to the red ART QUEEN sign to get to the World Famous Crochet Museum where 2 people can fit to visit at a time. It's basically a little village of cool art and shops! Definitely some worthy Instagram photos ops!

Google
A Joshua tree landmark. This tiny photo hut turned into a crochet museum is a must see, you will probably never find anything else like it. If you work with yarn you can leave on of your pieces to add to the collection. They have pins and stickers and stuff you can purchase. Be respectful of the space and the people who have created this. There are other art works and shops all in the same area. You can spend a whole afternoon exploring

Google
Love this unique stop! As a fiber artist it warms my heart to see these creations in a spot taken care of by someone who cares. Donations accepted.

Google
A quirky place - def. Add it to your itinerary for a weekend in Joshua Tree!

I called in before I went yesterday and Shari herself answered! I told her I was planning on coming in soon and she was kind enough to let the manager know to expect me. As soon as I went into the crochet museum and the shop, I felt so comforted! Everything was so positive and really was quirky in the best way. I always say art should incite emotions and intrigue. Shari’s art did just that! I bought a bunch of stickers and magnets to put all over my house and my trusty adventure water bottle. So, now I have a beautiful little piece of art with me wherever I go!

Google
You gotta go. Lovely little museum of crochet art and a shop with affordable art (stickers, fabric, crochet items, postcards, and more!) Clearly a labor of love that made me feel inspired by art and community.

Zoë Simmons

Google
So glad I stopped for this place, my cousin was insistent that we visited. Shari’s collection is amazing! My cousins and I spent around 20 minutes looking in the museum and checking out everything in the store. I got my mom this “F-bomb”, she absolutely loved it! She’s said she was going to take it to work for “when she really needs it” lmao. You should 100% make a stop here if you are passing through, very worth it.

This place is so cute! Perfect for a date place had so many cool other cute galleries and shops

Yelp
This is the Famous Crochet Museum! Its super cute and small :) and FREE! There are many hand made Crochet things to look at. You walk in and will find some even in the ceiling. It is located in a little village plaza filled with tiny stores with lots of fun things to look at. You need to stop by!

Yelp
The number one thing to understand about the World Famous Crochet Museum is it size. It's very small. Basically, the museum is housed in a small little shack type structure. This is not to say it's not an interesting space. But, it's not what one would consider a museum to be under normal circumstances, at least in terms of size. Once inside the museum, it is lined with tons of crochet items. There is all the things you would expect: various animals, flowers, pretty much anything you can think of, it's there, all in the form of crochet. It's very colorful inside. I guess, as expected, they ask you not to touch anything. Some of the stuff is behind a plexiglass panel, other stuff is more in the open air. But, you're not supposed to touch anything. Overall, if you love the abstractness of crocheted images, and a very cool pseudo museum, this is a fun space to visit, just keep in mind, it's only gonna take you a few minutes to check it out. :-)

Yelp
I saw this place mentioned in Westways magazine and had to see it for myself. It's floor to ceiling full of crochet stuffed into a small trailer. There are small hand written signs everywhere stating not to touch the crochet pieces. So many handmade, one of a kind little things. So fun!

Yelp
Had the cutest day trip in Joshua Tree, starting with the Crochet Museum. As a last hurrah before college starts for my boyfriend's little sister, we took her here to drop off one her own original crochet creations. We talked to a worker who told us her addition will be there to stay at the museum forever! Such a cool experience for crafty individuals who want to contribute to the mission of the museum. Definitely a landmark and must-visit if you have never been!

Yelp
Visited this place back in June for a friends bachelorette weekend. This is like a whimsical wonderland of all things crochet. There's a lot of creativity with each piece you come across. It really inspires you to learn all there is about crocheting. The work these crocheters do is truly amazing. The staff is very inviting , wanting to share their knowledge and answer any questions you may have. If you're in the area, I would recommend checking this place out. I'm glad I got the opportunity.

Yelp
The world famous crochet musuem is the cutest thing I've seen in a long time! It's a free mini musuem and plenty of parking out front. It holds enough room for two people to be inside and when it's summer you only feel like being in there a few minutes due to the heat . Attached is a cute little store that sells some small trinkets and also some crochet items you can purchase as well. It's definitely a fast and fun thing to do while in Joshua Tree!
google avatar

Kristinne B.

Yelp
I visited the Crochet Museum in Joshua Tree and was pleasantly surprised by how many crochet dolls were on display. It's a cute, quirky little shop that's definitely worth a stop if you're in town!
google avatar

Mimi L.

Yelp
Definitely worth a stop if you like unusual things. This is so small that I almost missed it. Look for the tiny, green trailer, and open the door. If the door opens, just walk inside to find hundreds (maybe thousands) of crocheted things: animals, unrecognizable things, just things. Weird and wonderful. It's definitely worth 5 or 10 minutes of your time. If it's open, the store next door has some fun things, and is run by a lovely woman.
google avatar

Diana S.

Yelp
This is such a cute and quirky place to visit if you're in the area. It's small and will barely fit a handful of people but still worth checking out. Plus it's free and you can purchase items from the gift shop next door!
google avatar

Linh P.

Yelp
Quirky & unique little spot in Joshua tree. It's completely free to visit & had plenty of cool photo ops. There's also a small gift shop right next to it, if you wanted to purchase some of the crochet goodies.
google avatar

Maria G.

Yelp
Cute little spot! The kids enjoyed it! So many items to see! It was a nice stroll we did of the town.
google avatar

Cherish F.

Yelp
This place is a funky and cute little tourist spot. There is parking and a little gift shop.
google avatar

Ilona S.

Yelp
Another quirky little place to visit when around Joshua Tree, the town. It's behind the art shops, close to the Saloon. What a hoot! Tiny and free of charge to visit. Then also visit all the little shops around it in the area, quite unique
google avatar

Yelp
I love these quirky road side attractions. It's what makes the desert unique. The museum is small 6x10, but jammed packed with artistic creations.
google avatar

Taylor H.

Yelp
Super cute. Loved exploring Joshua Tree and getting to see this lovely museum. Definitely check it out if you're in town.
google avatar

Zan L.

Yelp
A free and fun thing to do when visiting Joshua Tree. It's on the quirkier side, which is great because it seems roadside attractions are a rare thing nowadays. They have a parking lot right next-door and there is a retail shop behind the museum itself, which is very small on the inside, but there's a lot to see. The musuem is very small on the inside, about 3-4 max and all will have to be in the same group. It's definitely worth checking out when visiting town.
google avatar

Allison E.

Yelp
If crocheting is your thing, you will love this place. It's a tiny little shack but has really cool mementos not really our thing but it's good for someone who loves it.
google avatar

Annie B.

Yelp
A MUST STOP if you're in Yucca Valley!! The tiny museum is filled with tons of crochet pieces. It's really fun getting to see all the random/unique pieces and take pictures! I was surprised to see that no one stands inside the museum so it is Covid friendly! You can look at all the crochet projects without being interrupted. FYI- the museum is hidden and behind some small shops. It's right next to and behind the hair Museum/store. There's also other art exhibits/small arts shops around the museum to check out!
google avatar

Theresa Renee W.

Yelp
Most Definitely a Roadside Attraction...... this review is so long overdue. We stayed in Joshua Tree National Park for some hiking and camping for a week. I have visited here several times durning different seasons of the year! Directly in the heart of Joshua Tree at the main intersection of highway 62 and Park Blvd behind the iconic Joshua Tree Saloon you'll find a magical little enclave of art assemblages and constructions that would feel more at home in Burning Man than a small desert town. Behind a small collection of galleries the space opens up into a fantasy space. Social groupings of chairs and tables share space with a steam-punk room on legs, a satellite dish flower with dozens of rubber penis stamen, and the world famous crochet museum (which is actually more true than most "world famous" kitsch). An old walkup photo-mat repurposed into maybe the smallest museum I've seen, filled to the brim with the crochet collection of Shari Elf, who along with the museum also runs the Art Queen Gallery in the same space. The unmanned space is open all the time and accepts donations if you so choose. It's the kind of place that makes me happy and gives me hope
google avatar

Kailyn T.

Yelp
We went to find the crochet museum during our Joshua Tree stay, and I wish we had stumbled upon it rather than come intentionally. It's a cute, cuddly, trailer full of wittle crocheted creatures stuffed all in there. The trailer itself is a photo-op, with a few art pieces around it. Stepping into the little space will have a smile! Nothing curated or educational or themed, it's attached to a store. imagine a crotchet art booth all piled in the trailer. It's a quick stop if you're in the feel of a quick roadside attraction and a giggle.

Anais T.

Yelp
I'm sad to have forgotten the workers name but she was so sweet. This was such a cute little spot! I'm so glad we found it before leaving back home. Definitely worth stopping by
google avatar

Tracey F.

Yelp
It's definitely kitschy, but if you're looking at this thinking you'll spend a bit of time here, you'd probably be wrong. It is definitely better classified as a roadside attraction. The artwork, though, is unique and fun to look through. The actual 'museum' is a small trailer-like building with some fun crocheted creations. However, the day we visited was VERY warm and the small space doesn't have circulation and the smell of hot yarn is an extremely distinct scent. Overall, spend a few minutes looking at the artwork.

Yelp
If you're in the area, GO! What do you have to lose from a FREE museum? It really highlights the quirky hippie energy that is present in Joshua Tree. Is it small? Yes, but undeniably you will end up with a smile on your face while looking at all the crochet animals and objects. The Crochet Museum is actually the centerpiece of a whole art...collective? I'm not sure if there is just one artist responsible, but there are several different types of media used. It won't take that long to look around, but it's a worthwhile spot. If you wish to donate, you can do so, or purchase something from the gift shop. Lots of unique things to buy there.
google avatar

Ted C.

Yelp
The Crochet museum was listed as a place to visit in Joshua Tree and it was free so why not? Google already navigated us directly to the spot and there was free parking right there and we walked up to the grounds. The museum isn't the only exhibit here, and when we first walked in the door was closed so we checked out the other 'Art Queen' exhibits. Which were interesting and fun. While we were wandering around Shari drove in and unlocked the door to the museum and then went to her workshop. We checked out the museum-look but don't touch, folks; it took about 5-10 minutes and then we went to her workshop-which was the only other building that wasn't opened. Now when she first arrived she seemed a little flustered but after walking into her shop she was so sweet and friendly. We bought a couple stickers and she gave us a little canvas bag for free.

Yelp
So much cuter than I had anticipated. We had stepped out of the car to go into the Joshua Tree Visitor Center and I'd told me friend I wanted to check out the World Famous Crochet Museum. Ummmm, how the hell could I not guys? It's WORLD FAMOUS!!! Like has it's pic in airports and such! I needed to see it irl since the last time I was in town I'm not even certain it existed. I didn't spot it as we drove by but glanced across the way and there it was peaking through the fence in all its glory. We walked over through the front gate and not too many people were here since it was still fairly early. They were open and it was ADORABLE!!! I don't crochet but I'm fairly crafty and love handmade. It was probably the highlight of my day. Takes like 5min tops to see and I purchased their cute little sticker for $1. If you know the real value of small, cute and fun, you'll find it to be a real gem - if that sort of stuff is lost on you, well then it'll be completely lost on you - like one of the views in the park that wasn't even worthy of me taking a pic of and I take pics of everything. So, as with all people, places and things - different strokes for different folks My fav item was probs the hot sauce bottle, since I LOVE hot and spicy!!! 5 very solid stars from moi!

Yelp
Quirky little place in quirky Joshua Tree. If you're in town, it's worth stopping by to look around.
google avatar

Yelp
Super quirky spot. Street parking. Park in front of La Matajora and Beauty Bubble. The museum is located in the back of these buildings. Free to visit. They have a small little gift shop. Are area is really cool werid in the middle of the dessert to much heat kinda way. Lots of throwaway art. The crochet museum is awesome. The doll figures are neat and well made. The building is self is really small. About the size of a walk in closet. Not much to do in the area, this was one of the highlights.
google avatar

Chanel Y.

Yelp
So, I had only seen a picture of the outside. I had absolutely no idea what this place was going to be like. That being said, I was sort of let down once I got there. It's the size of a closet with all these crochet things inside. And the "gift shop" area didn't even have crocheted items for purchase!? Everything in the gift shop had nothing to do with the crochet museum so that threw me off. However, if you're looking for an Insta-worthy photo op, yeah of course visit this place-it's free! But please don't have high hopes.
google avatar

Robert H.

Yelp
Very cool place! Glad we stopped by to take a look. Really only one person fits in museum at a time so there is a line to view. But the wait wasn't long and it was really neat to see the crochet pieces.

Jake R.

Yelp
Don't be dumb like me the entrance is on the other side check out the clothing store next door too, hands down the coolest shop on the street and tons of original art that's local.
google avatar

Ash P.

Yelp
A must stop! I love museums, roadside attractions, and artist made spaces -- this is all three at once. It's a cute little structure nestled behind an art gallery and beauty parlor, easy to walk up and enjoy. I was tickled with delight enjoying all the treasures within!
google avatar

Maria E.

Yelp
FYI - Access can be gained through the front (by the salon). Look for the little gate and head to the back. There are some parking spots here as well. Super cute. It's a small building that houses a bunch of crocheted items. It's free and unmanned. You go in, look around, take photos, and leave. There is also a thrift store next to it which has a donation bin to support the crochet museum. The yard also has all sorts of other cool art to check out. Quick but fun stop on your visit to the area!
google avatar

Jacqueline L.

Yelp
Kitschy to the max and oh so worth the stop! If you're driving through Joshua Tree or if you want a small activity after a long day of hiking this is a fun stop.
google avatar

Tabitha H.

Yelp
Fun little stop in Joshua Tree. The World Famous Crochet Museum is around a 4 minute walk from the visitor center. It's hidden in the back of a small storefront. You need to walk through a gate, where you'll walk on an artsy pathway. Then eventually, you'll see a dusty clearing where the World Famous Crochet Museum stands.
google avatar

Ceci O.

Yelp
Such a cute place!!! Drove 2 hours just to see this magical place. The lady working there was super nice too. Make sure to leave a little donation inside.
google avatar

Linda C.

Yelp
Cool place to stop by and check out. Pretty easy to find, there are signs that lead to the museum. It was kind of awkward, I felt as if I was trespassing into someone's backyard.
google avatar

Liz R.

Yelp
This was the cutest stop we made on our LA/Cali adventure. We stopped by on our way out of Joshua Tree for a few minutes to check out the cuteness and were so amused (and amazed at the craft!). Definitely worth stopping in!
google avatar

Lisa P.

Yelp
As a crochet and knitter I had to check out the Crochet Museum. It is as tiny as it appears in pictures. It only fits about two people at a time. It is packed full of crocheted items, I just wished they were for sale! The area around the museum has some cool art installations and other shops so check out the whole area!
google avatar

Kevin C.

Yelp
First off let me start off by saying that the museum is FREE. So it's already pretty hard to go wrong with a free museum. Secondly, besides just the museum, there's an entire courtyard of art that the museum is in which makes this place a definite must visit spot if you're in the area. The museum itself is actually pretty small, it's this one little booth tucked away near the back of the courtyard, but it is jam packed with all sorts of crocheted items. I don't think you'll ever find such a collection of crocheted items anywhere else. Another great thing about the collection being so tightly packed together is that you can fit everything into photos! From the street, you can't really tell what the museum is like, but as you walk back to the courtyard, you're greeted by these huge art installations that are scattered throughout the courtyard. There's also a small little art gallery/giftshop where you can buy gifts and knick knacks. I highly recommend buying something to support the artists who created this free experience. There's also tons of street parking up and down the street. Highly recommended to check this place out if you're in the area.
google avatar

victoria p.

Yelp
Fun stop to bring out-of-town visitors. So. Much. Crochet in a tiny space. We always stop in and buy a couple of stickers for our kid when we visit.
google avatar

Martin L.

Yelp
Cool art installation in the middle of Joshua Tree. Eclectic collection of printed clothes, sculptures, and wall art.
google avatar

Donut D.

Yelp
Nice little museum on our way Joshua Tree National Park. The art displays are interesting, many were made by scraps but very cool to see. The crochet dolls are absolutely adorable. There is a shop that sells all kinds of interesting stuffs, from clothes, badges, patches, displays to keychains. You can easily spent 45 minutes. A fun place to visit.
google avatar

PJ C.

Yelp
The content was mildly interesting to me though the tiny little hut itself was fun in itself. After visiting the Bubble Beauty museum next store this was a bit of a let down. Definitely worth a stop when checking out the nearby art stores and Big Josh down the street.
google avatar

Teemaree ..

Yelp
Doesn't look like much from the street but totally opens up when you get around back. This delightful museum is on artistic grounds that house exhibits along with sculpture art you can climb in and take pictures with. The crochet museum itself is tiny and chock full of all kinds of crochet. It is whimsical and colorful. We were happy to have seen it. There is also a store on the grounds and a way to be a part of the museum yourself by donating your own crochet pieces. It's definitely worth the time if you are in the area. It is totally free to visit and park too.
google avatar

D W.

Yelp
Weird. I'll give ya that. But a nice little odd odd stop by J Tree. If only the little, building was actually crocheted, that would be something.
google avatar

Luke H.

Yelp
A really fun desert gem!! It's tiny and wonderful. Do go and take a look and see all the rest of the things around. Several art venues and stores all staffed with kind and knowledgeable folks.

Jakob C.

Yelp
Cute little experience. Free, inspiring for us crocheters. A cool part of downtown JT.
google avatar

Ken L.

Yelp
Mixed in with a lot of other cool art shops and a bookstore, this place is tiny but fun and does not disappoint. You could spend quite a bit of time here checking out the crochet art and in the surrounding area shopping if you wanted. The people who work around here are all super friendly and chill as well.

Danny P.

Yelp
Smallest museum I've ever been to but I love quirky roadside attractions and it's part of a little section of a few quirky museums and oddity type art .. check it out .
