Fun little stop! I was told multiple times not to touch the ball of twine by locals… I finally asked why and apparently people pee on it. Disgraceful of them. The ball of twine itself is still pretty cool. There is a sign explaining its history! Also thought the mailbox with the guest book in it was an awesome feature. There is a lot of construction going on right now that made it harder to get to.

Google
Loved it! Loved that it is open 24/7 because we came through about 10:30 pm. There is road construction going on right in front of it, but we were able to still park there and walk up to see the display. Very cool story! I love the guest book in the mailbox... this ball of twine was our last destination for the day as we travel home to Iowa from AZ.

If you're interested in roadside attractions, then this is one for you. It's one that you drive to, take a pick and move to the next. The GPS had us looking for it on the wrong side of the road. And the side it was on had road work. I finally was able to get to it. Plus, the water tower is pretty cool, and it's free.

Google
Easily the cutest, quirkiest roadside attraction we’ve visited! In addition to the splendor of the ball of twine, the locals were so friendly and welcoming. P.S. you’ve gotta try the fountain shop across the street!!

If you are looking for something incredible like this ball and nice pictures to take, I recommend you to stop in this little town full of beautiful old buildings, murals and businesses.

Google
I thought they said Largest Bottle of Wine, so of course I wanted to see that. Oh well, at least it was not crowded and I learned that there's such a thing as the Largest Ball of Twine.

Google
Very interesting. The woman that takes care of it just so happened to show up when we were there and talked to us about it for a little while. No tickets required, it's free.

Brenda Anderson

Google
Another one of the "BIGGEST" things to see in the USA. I enjoy that sort of thing; when you're traveling, it's interesting and a good way to get out of the car and stretch. Not spectacular but quirky fun! It is on one of the main highways and is FREE. Parking right next to it and plenty of room to pull in with your RV.

Yelp
Your life will never be the same after you are blessed to see this giant ball of wonder. It's not just big, it's not giant, it's freaking gargantuan. The love and care this city has for that massive monstrosity it's much to be admired. Will always think about this incredible roadside beauty.

Yelp
So...this was an unexpected stop but who couldn't resist it? The largest ball of twine called us and we must answer and yes it's (((BIG))) there are some older buildings in town and the local community is very friendly be sure to check out the neighborhoods you'll see some vintage cars and trucks

Yelp
Yea, I'm not the only one that has done this visit more than once. Yes, as it IS the largest ball of twine in the world, it's absolutely 5 stars. No question. And don't you forget it. Very worth the effort to get here. And then, after you do, it's on to Lucas to see the epic Garden of Eden and the other oddities the town has to offer, followed up by another 20 minute drive to see the world's largest hand painted Czech egg in Wilson. Who needs Paris when you have this?
google avatar

Yelp
I had to give this 5 stars because how do you rate the largest ball of twine, with a 5 of corse. Frank Stoeber started this ball of twine in 1953 when he stumbled on some twine and started to burn it but instead started to wind it up. And winding up till it was as large as his barn door. In 1956 it weighed 4,035 pounds and was 7ft 5in across. Then the city people started give him twine. In 1973 it was in Guinness World Book of Records. Frank passed away in 1974 at the age of 83. In 2003 the town celebrated 50 years and it just keeps getting larger. The ball of twine now weighs 20.078 pounds. We drove and hour out of our way to see this and I enjoyed seeing it and learn about Frank

Yelp
The secret to this attraction is get there when Linda the Twine Lady is there. You'll get the entire story of the farmer who started the ball of twine. You'll also get to add twine to the Largest Ball Of Twine making it even larger. I was lucky. Linda was there and I got to add twine all the way around the 26,000 pound ball. I got to tie the knot of twine to the ball of twine. The farmer who started rolling the ball of twine never thought it would become this. The Goldberg's tv show is going to film there, I was told. Kudos for Cawker, KS who would not sell to Ripley. It's a pretty cool attraction to hold on too. If your in the area, drive into Concordia to see the POW camp,

Yelp
I've seen some strange and quirky things in my travels but this may top the list. I must admit I didn't happen upon Cawker City, Kansas by accident I was traveling across the state and while eating breakfast in a town I've since forgotten there was mention of this giant ball of twine on the place mat under my plate of bacon and eggs. Even though it was completely out of the way and completely screwed my travel schedule I realized I was as close to this funky attraction as I may ever be in my live so why not. After driving for what seemed like hours for hours I arrived in front of this giant gazebo housing a big ball of baling twine my first thought was so this is what they do out here in the middle of nowhere in their spare time between slopping the hogs, cutting wheat or building tornado shelters. Well any-hoot this thing was pretty cool and for at least 5 minutes I was in total awe and then I jumped back in my rental and booked it out of town. So this may not be one of your bucket list items nor was it mine at the time but I'm kinda glad I've been there and done that. Bucket List X - 1. Ride a train across The top of the Alps X - 2. Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge X - 3. Niagara Falls X - 4. Bungee Jump 5. Grab a Seat on Space X 6. Climb Mount Everest 7. Go Halibut Fishing in Alaska X - 8. Go see the Worlds Biggest Ball of Twine 9. Drive a few laps around a super speedway X-10. Visit Hawaii

Yelp
I was bummed that the gift shop across the street was closed, but thankful to follow the painted twine on the sidewalk to the city office (next to the library) to score some twine ball swag. $25 for a tumbler, $20 for a t-shirt, $5 for a shot glass. She even offered to call the curator, but I declined not wanting to bother her. This was a must stop for me on my family road trip because I love kitschy stuff like this and it did not disappoint. The city office even gave me a free length of twine to add to the ball. My life can only go downhill from here. I will say that there isn't much else in the town other than a few antique stores, closed buildings and a nice little playground, but worth a stop to be a part of the world record. The twine ball is also a virtual geocache if that's your thing.

Yelp
Alright, someone has to bring attention to the weird tourist attractions of the U.S. I drove all the way through Kansas during my cross country trip just to see this thing. There is nothing, and I mean NOTHING else within hundreds of miles, so if you made the trip all the way out here just to see a stupid ball of twine, you must be a very special (and I mean "special" in the good way,) kinda person. If you've never seen 18,000 pounds (1300 miles) of twine wound into a ball and happen to be passing through rural Kansas, you really need to see this thing. Apparently there is a Twine Festival in the summer, which I unfortunately missed, and there is a Ball of Twine hotel, which was closed when I visited. Someday, I plan to make the pilgrimage back for the festival. And then I will be extra special.

Yelp
Wait -- there's a festival?!?! They didn't mention that in my crazy roadtrip book!! The most important thing to add is that, after living in CA and Washington DC, the most amazing thing happened here... I'm standing across the street from the ball of twine (yes, it's seriously just in the middle of this neighborhood that you'd expect to see a McDonalds etc in) anyway, here I am, holding up my camera and... the CAR'S ACTUALLY STOPPED TO LET ME TAKE A PICTURE!?!?!?! Okay -- I've never seen anything like that before. Seriouslly- people stopping their CAR'S in the middle of the road just so I can get an un-interrupted picture of this HUGE ball of twine?! OMG. Talk about service. Wow. Kansas is cool

Yelp
Brian K. wasn't kidding when he said this thing is hundreds of miles away from anything, but I made the trek out there anyway. It is what it is -- a big ball of twine. I wouldn't say that it's necessarily worth the trip for most people, but I like to find random things in random places and this certainly fit the bill. Other people must have the same agenda though because the log book had entries from nearly every day. If you'd like to add twine to the ball, contact Linda Clover and she'll hook you up: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/towns/Cawker/twine.html And Cawker City in general? Interesting for a city girl, that's for sure, but the locals were wonderful and very welcoming. CORNER BAR & GRILL HOLLA!

Yelp
It's everything you thought + more. This is a huge stinky (yes, stinky!) ball of twine. Four of us took a road trip across Kansas to see this thing. In case a viewing is not enough, there is also a festival. Cawker city, you are one-of-a-kind, and so is your enormous ball of twine. http://www.cawkercitykansas.com/twine-a-thon-video.html

Yelp
Been on my todo list for over 4 years! Finally made it! It is definitely off the beat n path and probably took us an extra 2 hours on the road to the east cost. The ball of twine is great, the caretaker is adorable and she leaves her phone number on the website so you can call her and she will bring you some twine to wrap around the ball! How cool is that! IT's a fun place to stop, little more hills and interesting things on the side of the road than the 70, but definitely a slower speed!

Yelp
I drove a couple hours out if the way to see this. It is so bizarre I had to check it out. It was the highlight of my return trip. There was nothing else to see in western Kansas so I just drove home.

Hussein B.

Yelp
Wife and I decided to go on a road trip to the contiguous center of US and the ball of twine was on the way there. So we decided to stop by and check it out. The ball is huge! It is in the middle of no where but we had a great time taking photos next to it.

Yelp
I hit this on a whim while driving cross country and I'll tell you what-- it's worth seeing. Yes, the ball of twine is only a ball of twine. But the countryside getting there is quite beautiful and the people in the area are very friendly. Rather than just drive through Kansas as you hustle from whatever leftist city it is you're driving to, from the leftist city you just departed, take time to get off the interstate and investigate this wonderful part of the country. It's like a John Cougar Mellencamp video with the sound turned down. My only regret is that there was really no place to buy anything, at least not when I passed through early in the day. So try and run your tank down and buy gas in or around Cawker City. These good folks went through the trouble of constructing an enormous ball of twine, I think the least we can do is try to reward them financially because, in all seriousness, it really is worth the detour.

Yelp
I drove through the middle of town late at night on a cross country trip and spotted the attraction as I was passing by. My friend was asleep in the car, so I backtracked on foot with my camera to document this wonder. When I got back to the car, I showed my friend and she was eager to take a gander at the curiosity! We posed and looked, and read, and touched (just a little--there was a cricket to be pointed out). It was neat. I'm still sad about missing the awesome Kansas City public library, though. :-/

Yelp
In my travels I seen some of the most spectacular wonders of the world: the pyramids of Giza, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Colossus of Rhodes and even that large McDonald's that bridges I-44 in Oklahoma (highly recommend). These ancient and modern day monuments are crowning achievements of the human race and visual testaments to the capability of man. However with all that being said, they pale in comparison to the vastness that is Cawker's largest ball of twine. Rising over the Midwestern plains like an alien moon, the largest ball of twine's awesomeness can only be matched by its intricacy. Spooled over and over again as if by the hands of our divine creator, the largest ball of twine consumes you both visually and mentally. I have seen the ball of twine twice now, and after both times I find myself questioning the world we live in and the limitations of humanity. I highly recommend you see it for yourself but be warned some people may find the sheer volume of twine disturbing. Be mentally prepared to see so much twine that it sticks with you, like a creature in the night. Final thought, I don't recommend taking children under the age of 13 as their little minds can't comprehend that much twine. Regards, Xander

Yelp
I am 44... I honestly can pass away now as this was by far the greatest thing I have ever seen in my entire life. Two things that I want to point out. 1.) The Journey and 2.) The discovery. The Journey - the cross country trip I had scheduled for my daughter and I from Detroit to Las Vegas got side tracked when she decided that she would rather stay at home and play softball. So I decided, hey, my 80 year old father would LOVE this! So I flew him out and the journey started. We spent some time in Lincoln, NE going westward. We knew the ball of twine was a target. The drive from Lincoln to Cawker City was amazing. My GPS told me to go for 47 miles and then turn left, then it would be go 111 miles and make a right. THRILLING! I have to admit though, the highlight of the trip was literally stopping in the middle of one long stretch of road, walking over and taking some selfies with cows. I am not sure how Kansas did it, but they made the drive to Cawker City feel like I was on a driving treadmill. I saw the same thing over every little up and down the entire way. Small hill, cows, green stuff, small hill, cows, green stuff. I could barely contain my excitement. Another 57 miles and a left. Though it was only 3.5 hours, I can honestly say it felt like I drove for 18 straight days. I probably could have stopped the car in the middle of the road stripped down and frolicked in the field with the cows for hours on end without another soul seeing me. The Discovery - we finally went over a small hill, fully expecting to see more cows, when we noticed something different... Water! A lake! OMG!!! At first I thought it was a mirage, but the GOS said another 6 miles and turn left. I literally was getting massively erect. I was expecting like an amusement park atmosphere. What I got was a large ball of twine inside a small wooden hut. We did run across another family that was there taking selfies in front of the ball of twine. Apparently this was a bucket list thing for people of Kansas... It should be a bucket list thing for every human being on this planet and possibly some aliens outside of the planet. There was a notebook sign in sheet where you out your name and date and where you came from. Saw a lot of Kansas and Nebraska people on there, we added Detroit and Las Vegas. Breathes the air and then got back on the road. Next stop Carhendge in Nebraska!! I wish they sold T-shirts, I so would have bought a few of them.
