8 Places You Wouldn't Expect to Find Giant Eggs

"Nestled in the Heartlands of Kansas is a small Czech community know as Wilson, which happens to be home to the world’s largest Czech egg. Towering 20 feet into the air, the egg is painted in the fashion of Central-Eastern Europe’s famous eggs. The pattern on this egg is a traditional Czech design. The project was commissioned by the City of Wilson to commemorate the area’s strong heritage. Local artist Christine Slechta, who is a talented Kraslice (what the Czechs and Slovaks call these delicate works of art) creator, chose the design and painted it along with help from the community. Every part of the egg and surrounding gazebo is Kansas made. This is a labor of love from the Kansas Czechs to the world. Anyone traveling by Wilson on I-70 is encouraged to come stretch your legs in the shade of the egg. Wilson is also only a few short miles from Wilson Lake; which has the clearest waters in Kansas, as well as some of the most beautiful scenes. The community of Wilson also hosts an annual celebration of Czech Heritage the last weekend of July every year." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The World’s Largest Hand Painted Czech Egg is beautiful and fascinating. This is exactly the sort of thing we love running across when traveling. The workmanship is amazing and the setting and structure the egg are also great. Set in a small park this is a really cool site.

Okay, I'm going to rate all of Wilson, Kansas on this one and not just the "Egg". For such a small town, I think it would be worth it to come back and explore a little more. First, you have the Czech Egg and numerous other small eggs throughout the town (much like the Dala Herd in Lindsborg). Second you have historical buildings, such as the main hotel in town, the Midland Railroad Hotel & Restaurant. Others include an old water tower and a refurbished theater? Third, there are a bunch of old painted advertisements on the sides of buildings. So cool! We were just passing through, but took numerous pictures and plan on returning to this small farming community. Interestingly enough, in all the areas we drove through Kansas, right outside of Wilson is where we saw the only field of sunflowers growing! We thought it was the sunflower state, but I guess we were mistaken! There us a big Czech festival in town and there were numerous informational kiosks describing various things around town. Definitely worth a stop and to spend more time!

We've lived in Kansas for over 75 years, but this was our 1st trip to see the Czech egg in Wilson, KS. What a huge hand painted egg! It sounded hollow when I tapped on the egg's surface. We took photos, too!

Google
Billed as the World's Largest Czech Egg; I've no way to verify that if I wanted to. But here stuck in the middle of the town is this large Easter Egg painted all fancy. That is certainly something one does not see everyday. We were driving old Highway 40 for a week instead of taking the Interstate (You really don't see that much from the interstate do you?) and rode by it. Looks like a great little town. Not much going on when we drove by but we're glad we stopped and checked out some of the local sights.

Cute little spot to stop, stretch your legs and get some cool photos of the Egg. Just quick drive from i70, and there was space to park for my 30th Class A and tow vehicle directly across the street

Just a little off I-70 in Wilson, KS is this giant 30ft. fiberglass egg. The park has information about the history of the area and the tradition of these painted eggs. There are smaller 3ft tall eggs around town to find as well. The town was probably a cute place in its time, but that time has passed. The downtown is more than half boarded up and the historic opera house burned down a few years ago. The shell is now an outdoor amphitheater. If you do stop by, visit St. Wenceslaus a couple of blocks south of the egg. This gothic revival brick church has beautiful stained glass windows and stencil work.

Google
This is worth a stop. Reading about the Czech immigrants who settled in Wilson and their contributions to the town. The Czech eggs are a work of art and the entire town is filled with their work. I find it ironic that so much is dedicated to them and their search for freedom, and now immigrants are no longer welcome.

Google
Nice little oddity right off the highway. There is a nice placard with history and information about Wilson and its Czech heritage which I found to be a very nice display honoring the towns history.

Yelp
The Town of Wilson, Kansas is famous for its collection of Czeck eggs, one of which qualifies as the "World's Largest Czeck Egg". The egg is LARGE and it's beautiful (see pictures). We took the time to drive around Wilson - looking for the other Czeck eggs and we found a lot of time. Worth the detour to see this 20' tall decorated Czeck egg.

Yelp
Fun little town with lots of hidden eggs. Fun facts: Nestled in the Heartlands of Kansas is a small Czech community know as Wilson, which happens to be home to the world's largest Czech egg. Yelp
This was one of the things in this area of Kansas that I really wanted to do. Don't ask me why but the idea of visiting The World's Largest Czech Egg really made me happy. We drove by it at first to get to another attraction in Lucas and I got to tell ya, I couldn't wait to actually stop and take pictures with this thing. It sounds so silly but, honestly, I think this was one of the coolest pieces of art I saw this entire trip. Sure, there isn't much to do around here. There's supposed to be a revitalization of downtown but I'm not sure if that's the actual case or not. But is this bugger gets people to stop and get out of their cars, then great. I didn't really post much on social media while visiting Kansas (terrible mobile service for me) but I may Instagram this egg right now...

Yelp
Well yep it's a huge Czech Egg! A couple miles off the highway and the perfect place to get out for a leg stretch or walk. This little exhibit and park is so charming, as is most of the town. Worth a stop!

Yelp
The battle for the worlds largest fill in the blank egg continues! Definitely worth the quick stop off Highway I 70 in the town of Wilson Kansas. The egg is quite large and there's plenty of parking. We stopped here when we were doing a cross-country road trip for some Instagram photos. Only thing that they need is a cell phone camera stand that is centered so that you can get quality photos with everybody in the picture it's very unique and quite hilarious looking!

Yelp
As the World's Largest, and possibly the only place on the planet that would display such an item, it is totally 5 stars. Actually, in comparison to other all things largest, a long running trend in this part of the country (ie, largest Ball of Twine in Cawker City, world's largest hand painted toilet in Lucas, the Garden of Eden, etc.), this is surprisingly well displayed and tasteful and, dare I state, truly artistic. It sits by itself in a park with plenty of parking, some bench seating, a display explaining all things Largest Egg, etc. So, now that they have the Egg, I'm hoping they'll do the World's Largest Kolache next. I'd so dive into eating that. If you go: open 24 hours a day, no admission, ample parking. Locals say people stop all times of day including in the middle of the night, pulling off from I-70 a few miles to the North. And why not?

Yelp
Absolutely LOVE this egg! It's HUGE, it's beautiful!!! This was one thing I wanted to find and see since moving here. I love seeing this egg, it's amazing. Odd that it makes me so happy. Now I want to try and paint some much smaller ones. LOL And even after any lengthy drive, it's worth it to see it and be able to get out, walk around it. The entire little exhibit is so cute, it's really very lovely. I would love to get some funny pictures with this one.

Yelp
How can I not give the World's Largest Czech Egg less than 5 stars? Can I give a Town that I'm certain Patrick Mahomes can throw a football from one end to the other, 5 stars? A town, probably not, but the hand painted egg in the tiny town of Wilson gets 5 stars. A woman painted the large egg , but also paints miniature replica goose eggs sold at the Wilson Mercantile. She also several other smaller Czech eggs around the town. I love Faberge eggs, hand painted eggs, Easter eggs. There is a nice amount of information about the WLCE next to it. It's really cool and sits across from the Midland Railroad Inn where I stayed. If in the Are don't skip Wilson. It's 16 minutes from Lucas.

Yelp
An egg so big, you look like a tiny thing next to it. It's a beautiful sight, not too far off the highway. The town is pretty quiet, parking is on the street next to it. It's worth a stop to walk around it, see the signature, read the story!
