Wotrubakirche - Katholische Kirche zur Heiligsten Dreifaltigkeit

Unfortunately, I came late do it was already dark and the church was already closed, so there was no chance to get inside. However, it was still a great experience to admire this beautiful brutalist building from the outside. The shape and geometry of this piece of art are crazy. If you come to Vienna and miss this spot, you don't deserve to come here at first place. That was actually the only thing I had a chance to see here and I don't regret. I'll definitely come back to see nie it looks in the daylight and to admire the interiors. My best recommendation, don't hesitate to come here!

Wotrubakirche – Katholische Kirche zur Heiligsten Dreifaltigkeit is a remarkable and unusual church located on a quiet hillside near Vienna, nestled directly next to the forest. The surrounding area feels pristine and untouched, providing a peaceful escape from the city. Its architecture is strikingly modern and distinctive, composed of massive concrete blocks arranged in a sculptural formation, creating a sense of awe and monumentality. The church was designed by Fritz Wotruba, a well-known Austrian sculptor, and reflects his unique artistic vision, blending raw geometric forms with spiritual symbolism. Unfortunately, when I visited, the church was closed, so I couldn’t experience the interior, which is said to be just as impressive, with a serene and contemplative atmosphere. Even from the outside, however, Wotrubakirche offers a dramatic contrast between its bold concrete forms and the lush greenery of the forest, making it a truly special place to visit. Its secluded location and distinctive design make it both a hidden gem and an inspiring example of modern religious architecture.

Rising like a sculpture against the Viennese sky, the Wotrubakirche (Church of the Most Holy Trinity) defies tradition. Built between 1974–1976 from 152 massive concrete blocks, Fritz Wotruba’s Brutalist masterpiece turns raw geometry into a place of light and contemplation, a reminder that beauty can be born from the bold and the unconventional.

If you're in the city on the weekend and are willing to make a trip around the restricted opening hours (Saturday 2-6pm, Sunday 9am-4.30pm), it's a lovely Brutalist church worth seeing. Hiking opportunities abound in the forest right behind, trails are well marked.

Beautiful example of brutalist architecture, sitting at the top of a leafy hill, at the edge of a large green park. Definitely worth visiting during operation hours and beyond.
