History Tour: Legends of the Wild West

"Unlike many of his contemporaries the famous lawman, gambler, and all-around Western icon Wyatt Earp is not buried in a rustic plot in the desert, but is instead interred in a peaceful Jewish cemetery along with his wife.  Despite his enduring legend, during all his years of law enforcement and gunfights Wyatt Earp was never so much as grazed by a single bullet. In fact Earp spent his final years working mining claims in the Mojave Desert in order to finance a comfortable life for himself and his wife in Los Angeles. With his more violent years behind him, Earp died peacefully at the age of 81 with his wife Josie Marcus at his side. Josie was so grief stricken that it is said she could not even attend the funeral. After a teary Los Angeles funeral service with such associates as W.J. Hunsacker, Earp’s attorney from the Tombstone days, and early Hollywood western stars Tom Mix and William S. Hart as pallbearers, Earp was cremated. Since he had agreed to be buried in Josie’s family plot despite not being Jewish himself, Earp’s ashes were taken to Colma, California and interred in the Jewish section of the Hills of Eternity Cemetery. When his wife Josie finally passed, she too was cremated and buried in the plot, assuring that the husband she so adored would never be alone again. A surprisingly touching end for such a complicated and rugged figure as Wyatt Earp." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The cemetery was very well maintained and clean. Wyatt Earp's gravesite was not difficult to find especially since there aren't many black headstones.

Yelp
Legend of the West [Colma CA] I did not know much about Wyatt Earp and his brothers until we visited the OK Corral in Tombstone AZ twice in 2015. Then I wanted to learn more about these Lawmen of the West. I have been fascinated about their story since, even re-watched the 1993 movie Tombstone. We were able to see Wyatt Earp's gravesite at our second attempt. They are closed on Saturdays. Our visit was on a Monday on Memorial Day in 2022. He is buried at the Hills of Eternity in Colma. Wyatt Earp was buried more than ninety-five years ago but the marker looks new and modern... found out that his gravestone has been stolen and replaced at least twice over the years in the past. He died and was cremated in Los Angeles and his ashes were taken to Colma and interred in the Jewish section of the Hills of Eternity Cemetery Memorial Park, his final resting place. His first wife died and a second marriage failed. His 3rd wife, Josephine, was cremated and buried next to Wyatt's remains. I just thought that it was pretty cool visiting the gravesite of one of the Wild West Cowboy Legends. PLOT: Plot D, Section 2, Lot 12, Grave 2 Review #3430

Yelp
For years I've wanted to go here, and actually did 2 years prior only to come in a day that it was closed. I'm a history buff and Wyatt Earp is one of my most favorite historical figures. It was nice to visit the final resting place of an American legend definitely want to check out the comma museum to see the original headstone that was stolen sometime ago and recovered. The staff at the cemetery was very helpful and helping us locate his burial site, definitely a must if you are a Wyatt Earp fan

Yelp
It's been said that Bay Area is know for the greatest ones. But with time every thing fades away.

Yelp
It's a cemetery ... with a "tombstone" (a replacement, as the original was stolen) marking the final resting location of a legend of the American West, and his beloved wife. If you're in SF, or paying respects to others at this beautifully maintained cemetery, may be worth a visit.

Yelp
Sounds weird. Visiting a graveyard and all. But there are so many historically famous people in the SF Bay Area. Lawman, town tamer, businessman, gambler, and friend to early Hollywood cowboys like Tom Mix. How can we forget the "Gunfight At the OK Corral?" Yes, this is a brush with greatness. No stranger than visiting Grants Tomb, or grave of The Unknown Soldier. And its right here in our own back yard. How cool is that?

Yelp
My name is Nicholas Earp and I am a descendant although not a direct descendant.. there aren't many of us found in the world.. in fact my two sons are the last line of the Earps on our side of the family.. I very much enjoyed the share since, much like our ancestors, me and my brother haven't had much luck in striking it rich or any of our business endeavors. Thank you for the warm wishes and the heritage that is as much yours as mine.

Yelp
Not much to say but the people were nice and helped me find it. May he and the rest of the Earp clan RIP
