We were there for only a few days and we used local taxis, while most people used Los Speed Vehicles (LSFs), like golf carts to get around. This is an excellent place to stay. The air conditioned rooms were wonderful, the staff were very helpful and friendly, and restaurants and downtown were relatively close by (via walking). Two "downsides" to the area: One, San Pedro was experiencing a massive Sargassum (seaweed) invasion. So nobody was swimming, snorkeling, etc. along the beach - not just here but around the entire island. So beware and find out if it will be there when you go. The pool was very nice. Two, in May, the air temperature was 83 or 84 - EVERY hour of the day - 3 AM, 10 AM or 9 PM! I've never been to a place where the temperature did not cool off at night. And this was for the 10 days forecasted when we were there. Again, find out expected temperature when you want to be there. Despite this, I would return but at a different time of year - particularly, when there is no Sargassum and temperatures cooled down a bit. But we had no rain!
