23 of The Best Luxury Hotels in Japan to Book Right Now - AFAR

"A 15-room retreat tucked within a bamboo grove near the Katsura Imperial Villa in Shizuoka prefecture, built in the Sukiya-zukuri teahouse style with bell-shaped windows, sliding doors, and tatami mats. Some rooms feature private outdoor spaces overlooking quiet ponds, and the onsen program includes several private baths filled with mineral-rich volcanic water plus a large open-air communal bath that borders a mossy forest, creating a meditative, nature-focused stay." - Yukari Sakamoto, Adam H. Relaxing, peaceful, beautiful, and quite a hike to get to it. We really enjoyed our time here and the staff was so lovely to help us learn to do things (at least partially) the traditional way. After all the walking that Japan demands of you, it was so nice to have a day to just soak, play board games with friends, and see natural beauty. I probably took 200 photos because everything looks so good. The food was adventurous for me (I'm pretty picky) but i was able to eat most things and they were delicious. Meals do take time because courses are served individually, so plan to be at the table for a good while. Know that they speak precious little English, so you will need a translator app and some patience, but they will absolutely take care of you. Also, when you arrive, you will be put into your robe and they will serve tea, so do not think you will show up and shower immediately. Be ready for the tea. 😋

Staying at this inn was the highlight of our trip to Japan. From the tranquil atmosphere, the tasteful room and its open air bath, to the garden view, food, and hospitality, everything was conducive to immersion in beauty and relaxation. Everyone in the staff was lovely: in particular, I would like to thank our Nakai-san, Mina, who took such good care of us to make us feel at home. Thank you for a marvelous stay. We will be back.

Perfect place to stay and explore Shuzenji and the surrounding area. Everyone here was kind, helpful and even accommodated our family traveling with a 16 month old. Breakfast and dinners in the room were spectacular. We had a room with a private outdoor bath and it was excellent. The building is quiet, close to everything, and even had a bar upstairs that we tried one night. Would definitely recommend this place.

The staff took such good care of our family during our stay at this Ryokan. The Kieseki dinner and breakfast were a delight, Kudos to the Chef. Thank you for your hospitality and service during our stay. You made us feel like we were at home and certainly made great memories for us.

My wife and I just returned from an incredible 1-night stay at this ryokan. We really enjoyed our time, including the room, the dinner, the private outdoor onsen in our room, and the beautiful little onsen town of Shuzenji. The stay is very private - all rooms were booked during our stay, but we never heard nor saw another guest. We woke up early in the morning and went for a walk to the top of the forested hill above the town where there’s a great view of Mount Fuji, then returned in time for the beautiful breakfast in our room. Service was wonderful, with minimal language barrier. We would love to come back again some day. ||Shuzenji is about 1.5 hours from Tokyo on a combination of Shinkansen to Mishima, then local train to Shuzenji, then it’s a 10-min taxi ride from the station to the ryokan. You can also take the daily Odoriko Express (the regular Odoriko, not the super fancy Saphir Odoriko) straight from Tokyo Station to Shuzenji, but it’s 2 hours and doesn’t give you much flexibility when you travel. On our way to Tokyo, we ended up having the taxi take us all the way from the ryokan to the Shinkansen station in Mishima, which was 8,000 yen and faster and more comfortable than the local train. If doing this again, I may also consider renting a car in Mishima so as to have more freedom to explore the surrounding area around Shuzenji. ||It may be helpful to know that the ryokan is adjacent to a street that runs through town. We stayed in the Ichiju room, which was one of the largest rooms at the property. I was a little surprised that the view from the front of the room was over the front of the ryokan and the road. The road was not terribly busy and it wasn’t a big deal, but know that all rooms are not looking out over a bucolic garden as the pictures may suggest. Our onsen was on the side of the building and was completely private.

Me and my wife had an incredible stay here on our honeymoon. The Onsen in the room was a special touch, however the food, service and environment was all amazing. I would recommend this to anyone visiting Japan. I have never felt more relaxed leaving after a great night's sleep and a few soaks in the Onsen.

The stay at Yagyu no Sho was very magical. The room that we stayed in was on the second floor with its own private bath. It was a very large room with many small rooms within. The room was very clean and felt luxurious. ||The service staff were wonderful. A special shout out to Taeko. She made our stay extra special with her wonderful demeanors. ||The meals were amazing both for dinner and breakfast. They were so abundance and beautifully made. ||They offered public bath within the facility and they were clean and well kept. ||Recommended !

Wonderful room and service. kaiseiki cuisine is lightly flavoured and creative with distinct Kyoto culinary roots. Impeccable bar.
