10 of the world’s quietest places for a dose of calm - SilverKris

"A misty, UNESCO-listed island forest often cited as the inspiration for Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke, this lush landscape features the Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine and ancient Jomon Sugi cedar trees said to be between 2,000 and 7,400 years old. Visitors can immerse themselves in forest bathing, walk babbling streams and mossy trails, and spot endemic wildlife such as Yaku deer, Japanese macaques and spawning sea turtles; local dining highlights include flying fish karaage, mackerel sushi and prawn tempura at neighborhood restaurants. The island’s dense, fairy‑tale terrain creates a naturally hushed, contemplative atmosphere." - Tamara HinsonandErica Fong

We visited Yakushima National Park during a cruise stop and decided to explore it by bicycle. It was an incredibly beautiful ride—about 11 km from the cruise wharf—and every minute felt magical. The scenery changed constantly, from coastal views to lush green forests, and the air felt unbelievably fresh. The highlight was seeing the ancient cedar trees, some thousands of years old. The atmosphere in the forest is calm, almost mystical, and completely worth the effort of the ride. The roads were manageable, with a few hills, but the peaceful environment and stunning nature made it an unforgettable experience. If you love exploring outdoors, cycling, or discovering unique natural wonders, Yakushima is a must-visit. Highly recommend!

The tiny, circular island of Yakushima to the south of Honshu is a dense, lush, semi-tropical forest of ancient cedar trees, some that have made the forest their home for over 1,000 years. It was a Stop on our cruise, and was fantastic. If you have a chance to go here while visiting Japan, do it!

This place is paradise. The trees here are among the oldest on Earth and everything is covered in this lush green moss that feels like it’s straight out of a scene from Princess Mononoke. If you’re a nature lover, this place is an absolute must-visit. I highly recommend packing waterproof gear and warm layers, as the weather can be completely unpredictable.

Yakushima National Park, located in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, is an enchanting destination that captivates visitors with its lush forests, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Yakushima is celebrated for its ancient cedar trees, some over 1,000 years old, which create a mystical atmosphere reminiscent of a fairytale forest. Exploring Yakushima offers a variety of outdoor activities, from hiking through moss-covered trails to scaling the island's highest peak, Mount Miyanoura. The island's unique ecosystem supports a rich array of flora and fauna, including the Yakushika deer and the Yakushima macaque, making it a paradise for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts alike. One of the park's highlights is Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine, a mystical realm where visitors can wander among towering cedar trees, moss-covered rocks, and crystal-clear streams. Another must-see attraction is Jomon Sugi, a massive cedar tree estimated to be over 2,000 years old, which serves as a symbol of resilience and endurance. Yakushima's natural beauty changes with the seasons, offering something new to discover throughout the year. Whether it's the vibrant colors of cherry blossoms in spring, the lush greenery of summer, or the golden hues of autumn foliage, each season brings its own charm to this remarkable island. While Yakushima National Park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, it's also a place of tranquility and serenity, where visitors can immerse themselves in the timeless beauty of nature.
