A very unique experience in Japan. Beppu is a wonderful destination in itself, staying at this classic and beautiful Ryokan enhanced our visit to the city. Staff is very earnest and friendly. The men’s and women’s baths are a great way to start and finish your day. The outdoor private bath was exceptionally good. Highly recommend, will definitely return!

We had a wonderful 3 days in Beppu! The staff were so nice and helpful. The property was beautiful. The breakfast each morning was a delight. The private onsen was such a tranquil area. Highly recommend!

I came here with my girlfriend without a reservation and they immediately provided a private open air bath (on a Friday). The bath was beautiful and the water hot, so we sat down in a room off to the side to cool off and the staff noticed we were a bit hot and gave us ice cold plum tea and cold water free of charge. Omotenashi takes on a different meaning at Yamada Bessou!

No wait time on Friday at lunchtime. ¥1000 each for 30 min private bath. Would definitely recommend.

An absolute gem! We had a fantastic experience. The hotel is a very traditional ryokan, the tatami mattresses are very comfortable and the private onsen very nice. The best about our stay though was the great service and warm welcome by Kenji, who even helped us arrange a fantastic vegetarian dinner at a restaurant he knew, when we were desperate to find a nice place to eat at on our last night in Japan. Thank you so much!

The quintessential Japanese ryokan! Great location near Beppu Tower and the water, comfortable room, delicious and hearty breakfasts, and great onsen! The staff was knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly; Kenji especially was fluent in English and helped us greatly in locating restaurants for dinner (and a wonderful cafe for coffee and snacks one day!) Yamada Bessout is about a ten minute walk from the Beppu JR Station and the main food arcade/street, and is just down the street from a coin laundry, so it is very conveniently located. Highly recommended.

We had a fantastic time here at yamada bessou! Kenji checked us in and he was very quick and professional. He actually has some very interesting stories related to his family and our hometown in LA, such a small world! The room was very comfortable and I liked how we had access to our own toilets and small amenities like hot water for tea in the room. You can book the private onsen using the little schedule board that had the name of your room. It's 30 minutes at a time, but you can book one in the morning and then later in the afternoon too if you'd like. We took the breakfast option and it was really good, lots of small dishes and we ate everything. The location is great too, since it's close enough to the main street, without being too close and noisy. Definitely recommend you try them out if you'd like to have the ryokan experience!
