After training from Kanazawa to Nagano, we dropped our bags at the hotel and were off to find some good eats. Monzensaryo Yayoiza seems to be a favourite for traditional, steamed Japanese food.
We dropped in on a late Wednesday for lunch (around 2:00pm). The inside is quaint and felt like we were in a traditional Japanese house. They were playing music that reminds you of being on a beach. That or a massage table.
Menu is short and sweet; chef's specials, rice dishes, appetizers, desserts and drinks.
- Sobacha - I found this tea (made from soba) absolutely fantastic! We got a couple refills; almost had a nutty flavour to it. You can buy a box (¥540 for 20 tea bags)! Regretting not buying a box to take home with me. Could not find this anywhere else.
- Monzen seiromushi (¥1,944) - this is the chef's speciality. Steamed Nagano beef and seasonal vegetables with ponzu sauce, okowa (steamed rice), chawanmushi (steamed egg custard) and miso soup. It's pricy and small but the quality is excellent. The chawanmushi was one of the best egg dishes I've had in Japan! The okowa, sticky rice wrapped in leaf, was fantastic but also a very small portion. Good variety of vegetables and the beef was shabu shabu style; thin and tasty.
- Onyasai salad (¥864) - no idea why it's so expensive to combo (¥540 extra to get a rice ball and miso soup). We just got the vegetable salad on its own; 20 different types of vegetables with a sesame seed sauce. Pretty good! Nice to finally get a variety of vegetables into our system.
Unique spot to try their wooden steamed boxes but pricey.
