Small portions, mushy fries, more batter than fish. Clam plate, had no fries or bellies on the clams. Service was terrible. Ran out of clam cakes at 2pm on a Friday. Place was clean. The only positive part of the dining. People swear by the quality of food there. Can't live on your past reviews, because this establishment has the worst seafood in the area.

I am a flight attendant who browses around towns and states because I am just so curious. I rented a car on my days off and drove up to Woonsocket to see what it was all about. Of course I pulled into a Market Square parking lot and the first thing I saw was a fish and chips restaurant. I have always loved fish and chips my whole life and had a feeling that this place would be amazing. And it was. I ordered two fish a la carte and they were seriously the BEST two pieces of fish I have had in a really long time. The shut down, reopening, and economy has caused a lot of eateries to cut corners on the quality of food, but not this place. The price was worth it. Huge, thick, meaty pieces of fish.

First off I know my English fish n chips. You can smell the deliciousness from the large car park at the rear. Queue up, place your order with the friendly counter staff and find a table. Collect your order and tuck in. Obvs the chips cannot be the same as not the same potatoes as in the UK. But they were still pretty good. The fish and its batter is excellent. Large portion. Highly recommend visiting. The fish cake was not what I was expecting so some regional differences there. It was more like pressed fish in batter. That was big too. Lots of regulars and a nice friendly atmosphere.

Google
It's not about armosphere, its about the food! Only place I know of that has English style fish and chips. Its different than the way most places do it. In my opinion its delicious. You have to try it to really understand what I mean.

Google
Best seafood platter for the price around. Matter of fact, best seafood portion.sizes for the price around! I got the seafood platter with Huge scallops and shrimp, nice piece of fish, and big beefy fries. The front of the house were super friendly. Our tables were clean and they wiped between customers. We will be back for sure!

Google
I don't like much seafood, but I have always liked Ye Olde English Fish & Chips since I was a kid, and have always compared any other fish and chips to it. I have only found one that I feel even comes close. I always order it well done so the fish is extra crispy!

Worlds Best Fish & Chips are at Ye Olde English Fish & Chips in Woonsocket, Rhode Island! Going back to the 1960's when I was a kid, I Love the Fish & Chips from Ye Olde English Fish & Chips!

I haven't been going there my entire life. This is the second time I go that I've had a very bad experiencefood was recovered reheated. Did not taste fresh whatsoever and when I complained all I got was a sorry. This is the second time I go in the last 3 weeks and it will be the last time I go. Quality of food that's going way down. Gordy would be very disappointed and his family for letting it go down so farnever. In my life, has there ever been? We heated food there, especially the chips. A $24 for a fishing trip. And a coastlaw I would have expected the food to be fresh. There are several other places that I can go to have a good fishing trip other than your Old English. This was not a good experience. I'm very disappointed. I don't expect to spend $24 on a fishing trip and throw half of it away. There goes a childhood experience down the drains. I used to absolutely love yielding with fish and chip. I was there every weekend as a child, my ki. Ds won't even go there anymore, not because of the pricesbut because of the quality of food. This is the. Second time I go in the quality of food has gone down the drain

Yelp
Place was fantastic. The olde school feel, the smell of fried seafood as you approach the door brought me back. First time here and I will definitely be back. The portions are crazy big and their tartar sauce is the best I've ever had. Cheers

Happy G.

Yelp
My family has been going here over 30 years, it was always good in the past. I haven't had been here in a while so tried it tonight. I have to say I am very disappointed with the food. The chips tasted old and re-cooked and they were shriveled up. Fish was good but small, and greasy. Overall, not worth the drive or the money.

Gary M.

Yelp
Greasy Gross - inedible. Ordered my meal, took one look at the grease pooling on the plate and left it all behind. Inedible

Yelp
Went Recently - Food was pretty good Delicious fresh "Chips" - Fries and a fish burger. Cooked perfectly. I'll have to say I missed this place. Tip: Don't miss out on the pickles Thanks

Yelp
Let's jump into ye old English if you love fish&chips this is the place for you we all ways get a fishermen's platter and a extra fish the French fries are to die for and cut fresh the kind you used to get when you was a kids at the beach by the sea . Service is fast and to the point menus are over head like at an old-school place . cafeteria style. Has not changed in years like this place is 100 years old same owners

Sarah R.

Yelp
A five review from a local girl who now lives in Southern California. One of the main reasons I go back to visit Rhode Island / Massachusetts area is to go to this place . The ambience could use a little help, but it reminds me of my childhood. The fish and chips are second to none! I've been to England and Ye Olde is still the best others don't compare.

Yelp
The fish cakes and fish are very greasy and the batter is thick. I like a lighter more flaky fried fish. The prices, like everything else in the US, is high. The white chowder is more like a very heavy pudding potato soup. No taste, just paste. Not a place I would recommend or return to. A very nice option for fish and chips and chowder is Chello's on Social St.

Linda L.

Yelp
have been a customer for many many years, went lately and ordered fish cake that was like half the size I always got and the price was up there. Don't mind paying more as I am aware of price increases but when it's half the size, will not be back anytime soon. Also asked for a large fry and the cardboard container got much smaller so got much less fries. Asked for ketchup and was given two of the tiny packets and was told they keep them behind the counter because people take too many. There isn't much in the packets. Disappointed with the place. Ordered for the two of us Paid 24.26 for two tiny fish cakes and a very small fry.

Yelp
Today the food was terrible- it's time to change the oil guys come on. The fish was bland and tasteless but even worse was the batter- the batter was not crispy on the outside and soggy and mushy inside-- disgusting. The chips- cooked in hot dirty oil, were obviously double fried by the colour and texture. Again tasteless. And please get some mushy peas on the menu- there is no English fish and chip shop that does not have mushy peas.

Joy R.

Yelp
I have been going to Ye Olde for 60 years. they are by far the best fish n chips ever. I drove an hour to go there. W few years ago they switched from using haddock to using cod. I not a fan of cod as haddock makes a far better fish for fish-n-chips. other than that it's still very good. but not excellent. please switch back to haddock

Yelp
6/26/2024 Needless to say for 16.95 the fish and chips was not worth it. The fish was small and the portion of fries even smaller. I don't mind paying if I get my monies worth but this definitely was not worth the trip. My wife had the fish and chips and I had a fish cake. The fish cake had very little potato And was small in size. The service was good and the cashiers were very pleasant. I have been here many times and the portions are just a fraction of what they were. I will not be driving from Providence where I live to go here anymore. It's sad because YE OLD was a great place to come AND ENJOY the seafood. once again, I guess I should've checked the reviews.

Hunter J.

Yelp
Best fish and chips place I've ever been to by far! Been going here for over 35 years and will keep going. Great chicken fingers and scallops as well!

Victoria G.

Yelp
It's lunch hour and very busy here. I ordered clam belly's and the new guy overcooked a tad. One of the family members was very observant and noticed I was picking a little through the dish, came over and offered a new fresh OVERFILLED plate. It is decadent btw now at this point and so so good! Excellent following and superb service. If you want an old school vibe in a world filled with corporate takeovers, then I recommend this place.

Kevin L.

Yelp
New to northern RI and wanted fish and chips. Saw this place has been around for a century and in spite of mixed reviews gave it a chance. Well I should have believed the one star reviews! First, ordered a clam strip roll - got a dinner instead. Fish and chips came with no Cole slaw& no tartar sauce even though I ordered extra tartar sauce. Food was of poor quality. Future customers find some other place to spend your hard earned money

Kevin O.

Yelp
Don't get to Rhode Island very often, but when I do, I make the pilgrimage from Warwick up to Woonsocket no matter what. Definitely the best Fish & Chips going. Cannot get Fish & Chips this good anywhere in Las Vegas, the whole belly clams are another treasure.

Adam B.

Yelp
Okay ... I am a fish and chip-aholic. I own that. I visit more 'chippies' in London than I should, given that the ones I seek out tend to use beef tallow (fat) which is a practice many restaurants stopped in the early 90's. Remember hoelw chicken McNuggets and french fries at McDonalds tasted so much better in the 80's? They were cooked in beef fat vs. vegetable or corn oil which is more bland. Ye Olde doesn't use beef tallow. I will be straight up ... this wasn't even close to the best fish and chips I've had. The fish was a bit thin and mushy vs. flaky. The fries were soggy and the batter on the fish was overly greasy. It wasn't as bad as it sounds but I've had way better. The price/value is what surprised me. It was very affordable. What I got for $9 would have been $18 at a fancier sit down restaurant. Considering the price and the scarcity of fish and chip stands in the US ... I'd come here again despite the mediocre food. I think the oil might be not hot enough which would account for greasy batter and mushy fish. The restaurant itself is a bit dated inside and feels kind of like a seafood restaurant from the 1970's with wood paneling, various cheesy nautical memorabilia on the walls and a front room which was loaded with boxes of supplies next to tables, etc. The covid protection was great ... hand sanitizer at the door, socially distanced tables and lots of signage. I believe they had limited outdoor seating. Woonsocket itself is a scary place. The buildings are cool in a retro way. It felt like a gritty town in England with all the brick and stone buildings. The people I encountered in town were downright frightening. Lots of bad tattoos and scary piercings. Plenty of neon colored dyed hair. On my way into town, apparently I wasn't going fast enough (5 mph over the limit) because an old SUV started to tailgate me and flash its lights. It pulled into the next lane and two fat gothy looking kids in their early 20's hung out the window and put up their middle fingers. Welcome to Woonsocket. Then in town, a 70 year old woman with neck tattoos stared me down in a pretty scary way. Know what you're getting into with the town but for a cheap lunch of greasy fish and soggy fries. it's actually not bad.

Yelp
I love this place. Eating there for over 60 years. As a child, Dad would come home with a bag full for the 7 kids at home. My boy Dicky, was fry cook there forever. Half his family worked there. Great place and I hope they never change.

Samantha L.

Yelp
worst 68$ I ever spent in my life honestly . Way too overpriced , fish and fries had no flavor Whats so ever , and worst part was I spent all that for all the fries to go in the trash because all 3 plates of fries was terrible and tasted like weeks old oil. Wouldn't even spent 2$ here on a soda ever again . Disgusting food .

Carol B.

Yelp
Unacceptable! First 2 people in was a gentlemen & myself we both placed orders Then waited almost 30 minutes after giving our takeout orders! They decided to prepare all eat in orders! Well a woman who needed to get back to work finally walked up & told them she needed to get back to work & there reply was Fish isn't ready! When it was my order & her was ready, I came home & fries WERE NOT COOKED! Always have been a valued customer but this service was not acceptable! UNCOOKED FOOD NO!!!! For $31.00 unexpected MORE! Carol Boucher

Yelp
Fish is heavily breaded and greasy. When busy it sits in a pile waiting to be tossed on a plate. I just go elsewhere at this point.

Jared S.

Yelp
Was fun and authentic feeling. Service was fast. Fish was a little oily but flakey and well cooked on the inside.

Mark F.

Yelp
Good fish & chips - terrible service. It's a nice cornerstone of this area with over 100 years in service but you'd think they would get it right in that amount of time. Called in F&C, shrimp platter, clam chowder, clam cakes only to arrive and be told "um... we don't do clam cakes after 3 on Friday". Okay - whatever / I get home with the order and no chowder and no Cole slaw or tartar sauce. Maybe if they had a better system they'd not ruin take out. If you're thinking of trying this place pass on take out. There's a small dinning room so when they screw up your order you won't have to go far to fix it.

Christine B.

Yelp
Why are you closed on Sundays? Don't people eat fish on Sundays or only all you can eat chicken?

Ron L.

Yelp
I have to purchase to go all the time because of health conditions concerning my wife. So, with this being said, For the 4 visits to Ye Olde English I always order 2 fish and chips to go. I ordered my 2 and had to wait while food was being cooked. Well, I really get upset when anywhere from 2 to 5 people who came in after me were served before me WITH THE SAME 2 ORDERS. The last straw is when I overheard the girls who were wrapping up orders said "I do not know who was here first and really don't care. People will have to wait". I have been coming to Ye Olde English for over 50 years and to be treated like this by inconsiderate employees is unconscionable. I will take my business to The Roast House in Blackstone, Ma from this day forward.

Michael C.

Yelp
I've stopped in a couple of times, the 1st to try it out to see, the 2nd and others because the 1st visit was Great. Originally from the UK the fish n chips are GREAT. I like a thick batter and so far have had this here. Easy parking, the inside as stated is a tad retro though adds to the charm. Price wise, works ok. This is a 40 + minute drive for dinner for me , am not sure why have not been visiting alot sooner. The Chips are excellent, my lady mentioned they are not salted, just like they are in the UK, shocking, Ye Olde English Fish N Chips has English chips. If in doubt stop by and give them a try. I've seen mention of missing mushy peas, this would be a waste as majority of customers probably would not want them. I didn't even in England though to each their own.

Tina G.

Yelp
Good service, but the food is so greasy - and the grease seems like it hasn't been changed in a while. It ruined what seemed like a decent piece of fish and handcut fries. Very disappointing!

Kranio S.

Yelp
It's been around forever for a reason. If you like fried fish, you'll love this place. I'm pretty sure they haven't changed the way the food is made for 100 years! You will greatly appreciate the way they do things! And the price is spot on for the quality !

John D.

Yelp
Back in the 70's and until my Dad retired, we went every Friday to Ye Old English & Chips for lunch. The serving always looked like the picture shown on this site (which was probably taken years ago), I also went in every Friday for three months and bought an order of fish & chips for each of the crew building my new home in N Attleboro. They all loved that food. I was intending to go back for the first time in a few years because I have been disappointed with a few other places closer to home with their rendering of the same meal. I read the new reviews and decided not to bother. We can't afford to eat out a lot like we use to because of higher prices, and I hate to leave a restaurant and feel I just got ripped off. I would pay for an order like the one shown on the post I see above on line--but that is not the hunk of fish you get these days--anywhere by the looks. I would respectively suggest there are some restaurants with excellent food that should raise their al ready too high prices even higher to the point they can serve a decent portion, or close their doors until President Trump gets back in the White House and fixes our economy.

Yelp
i found tasty alumnum foil in my foodiesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

Yelp
Best fish and chips EVER! I've had fish and chips at so many places and no where even comes close. You have to try this place if you love fried seafood. Fries are really good as well. Portions are great. You can't go wrong. Service is fast and efficient. Dining room is good size, with a decent beer selection. Try it!

Becky R.

Yelp
Heard about this place from a volunteer at Sturdy. He takes his wife here every Friday for lunch because it's where they had their first date. Cute story. This is basically an inside seafood take out experience. The ordering process is very efficient, order at the window and watch the magic unfold. I ordered a small fish and chip and it was good, but nothing extraordinary. My friend ordered the chicken sandwich and it wasn't great. Worth checking out if you are in the area.

Robert T.

Yelp
The absolute best fish and chips in New England. I fly up from Orlando just to eat there.

David O.

Yelp
we ordered the shrimp platters. I would say approximately 10 shrimp, and a small handful of fries. No complaints on the taste. The portions were small for the price. Almost 45 bucks for maybe 10 shrimp and maybe 3 cups of fries. Just seemed a little over priced for the atmosphere that was provided as well. Service was fine. But again, just if you're looking for a place to do you could only spend maybe 10 or 12 bucks more you'll probably go to a more eloquent establishment.

Helen B.

Yelp
Delish, reasonable and served up hot! Plenty of parking available. There's lots of seating - it is a seat yourself establishment but I don't mind choosing my own. I would definitely go back for the generous portion. Oh I also love reading about the history of the restaurant/recipe!

Andrew D.

Yelp
Fish was good, big portion but "chips" were soggy. Almost consistency of mashed potatoes. Won't be back.

Amy D.

Yelp
$65 for two regular sized fish and chip dinners w/ scallops. It was nothing more than a small piece of fish saturated in oil with four scallops on top of a bed of mushy fries. The oil definitely wasn't fresh which altered the taste and ruined the meal for us. Most of it ended up in the trash. Disappointed and sad to say we won't be back.

Laurel M.

Yelp
The past two times I've tried to call Ye Olde Fish & Chips, the phone just keeps ringing & ringing & ringing. And this wasn't during busy business hours either, this was around 3 o'clock in the afternoon. The second time I tried to call & place an order for takeout, they picked up and hung up the phone on me!! At first I gave them the benefit of the doubt, & thought maybe it could've been a mistake, but when I tried to call back a second & third time, the same thing happened!!! I am astounded at the lack of care for the patrons that have kept their small business running.. especially in these hard times!! I don't know if I will be returning to ye olde, & and that takes a lot coming from a waitress of over 10 years. I always support restaurant staff, especially family owned businesses.

Moira M.

Yelp
For authentic fish & chips and clam cakes and chowder this place is a place to go and the menu is reasonably priced. My husband and I typically go to Iggy's because we honestly forget this gem is in our own backyard. We ordered fish & chips, clam cakes, and 2 chowders (a red and a white). The fish was light and flaky and the batter was not too thick. The chips (fries) were also amazing and not greasy. One thing to note is the white chowder is seafood chowder not clam. The chowder was filled with fish, crab and shrimp and was a nice compliment to the clam cakes which were also excellent and rival Iggy's for sure. My husband had the red chowder and he loved it and said it had a nice strong tomato base to it. If you order take out, they wrap their orders in paper, just like they do in England. It's a nice authentic touch. The menu here might be small, but in my experience, places with small menus that have been in business for nearly 100 years, have perfected what they offer. Ye Old Fish & Chips is obviously doing something right. The only reason I did not give this review 5 stars is they never gave us tartar sauce or any malt vinegar on our takeout. I guess you have to ask for that? Regardless, we will ask next time and go back again soon.

Ant M.

Yelp
Been waiting for a while to try this place and it didn't disappoint. This is how I remember fish and chips, took me back to my childhood. The chips were cut fresh and the fish had a beer batter coating. We ordered a side of coleslaw, a perfect blend of vinegar and mayo very good. If your looking for a great fish and chip shop with decent prices don't pass this place!

Will F.

Yelp
We tried the dishes and both agree they are average. The fish was nicely cooked as each one at least was cooked in its own oil and so there is no cross contamination. However the chips seem to be an 'after thought' as they were processed and out of a bag and just fried up for effect. The fish was fried up nicely and had a nice outside crunch to it and they did offer all the dipping options one could want. The place was nicely decorated and kept VERY clean and that was an added bonus.

William A.

Yelp
We've enjoyed this place for many years. I realize that costs are going up for everybody. I went recently to discover that my favorite fish cake apoears to have gotten a bit smaller. But the shock came when I saw the price has jumped from $5.55 to $8.25. Wow! I know prices go up everywhere but 48% ??? I think this place just went from "go anytime " to "go only once in a while" status for us.

Mike P.

Yelp
Let me start by saying I'm from New England and I like ALL kinds of seafood. I'm trying to be as nice as possible here but in my opinion I can't for the life of me think of why someone would continue eating here. Cleanliness is definitely a problem. Bathrooms are gross. The tables had a slippery oily feeling, same with the floor. As you walk on it your shoes slip a little as you walk. Working in restaurants in the past you developed a sense for when something is bad. Like over used, over filtered fry oil. I've worked and eaten at tons of seafood restaurants. If the oil is dirty? I get sick. I've had fried clams, fried scallops and fish & chips. and I got sick all three times. Three strikes for me and I'm done. I know the place is busy and people like it and it's been there forever. Just use caution when going. It did not do well for me. The place needs a remodel BAD. I really wanted to like this place. I live right around the corner. I've eaten all the same foods at other local restaurants and never have a problem. The last time we went it cost me $68 for two orders of fried clams which was mostly old fries that were like re-heated fries. I'd like to say I'd be back to reevaluate but I can't risk being sick. Maybe after a remodel? Use caution.

Steve B.

Yelp
No rating can be given Went there for dinner tonight Food was horrible I had memories of years past of the delicious fish and chips Today is Wednesday and I was told that they change the fryer oil once a week on Fridays This may explain why the fish, fries, and clams were not edible clam chowder was disappointing Spent $40.00 for lesson never to return Too bad because I had such expectations

kathy s.

Yelp
I was so looking forward to eating here but the food was just awful. I got fish and chips and the reason it was so bad was because they need to change the oil it was cooked it. It's clearly old oil. Such a shame because I think it would've been good if they'd just use clean oil. The taste was so bad that I actually felt ill for the rest of the day. Please guys stop being so cheap and change the oil more frequently.

JeepGirl 3.

Yelp
A lot of people I work with were talking about this place so my family and I wanted to try it. Let's just say we are glade we did. Food was great and staff was extremely friendly and helpful. My husband got the fish and chips which was really good the batter was nice and fluffy and had the right amount. The chicken and chips was fresh and really good with the perfect amount of batter. Fries could have been cooked more though they were kind of soggy. The clam cakes were to die for nice and fluffy with a crazy amount of clams in them. Definitely fresh food when you go here. Love how you can add on picks for 0.97 cents highly recommend this place love the bye the sea atmosphere

Chris D.

Yelp
The fish itself tasted fine, although the portion seemed kind of small inside all the coating. I prefer it cooked a little crispier, but this was more on the greasy side which made it difficult separate the fish from the breading. Maybe this is authentic for English fish but it didn't work for me. The fries were soggy and mostly inedible.

X X.

Yelp
I thought this place would be a lot better than it was the grease was really old and everything was double fried. It's doubtful I will give it another chance if I do I will post it another review if it's better

Natalia O.

Yelp
Delicious and traditional English fish and chips, made extremely fresh and well. Hands down the yummiest greasy spoon in a large radius!!! We tried both the traditional fish and the fish cake (potato+fish+potato) and both were exquisitely crunchy on the outside and scrumptiously flaky on the inside. The chips were a tad soft for my taste, but perhaps that's how they're supposed to be in England? Definitely would go back!!
